AC Milan have officially announced on their website today the return of Matteo Gabbia from his loan spell at Villarreal after just six months. The defender was expected to be out on loan for the season but has been recalled due to the emergency at Milan.

Gabbia made 13 appearances for the Spanish side and was particularly active in the Europa League playing every single of their six and playing 90 minutes in five of those including two games against Stade Rennais - who Milan face in February. He helped the side to keep 4 clean sheets as they finished top of their UEL group and are midtable domestically.

The Rossoneri are in defensive crisis with Pierre Kalulu, Malick Thiaw, Fikayo Tomori and Marco Pellegrino all out for extended periods. Simon Kjaer has been filling in but has fitness issues while Jan-Carlo Simic has been a important addition from the Primavera.

The 24 year old has made 51 appearances for Milan to date and will be looking to find some space to establish himself and the third choice.
