AC Milan hosted Newcastle United at the San Siro yesterday evening for their Champions League opener in the group of death. Milan played a near brilliant game as they totally dominated the English side but simply failed to score despite having 19 shots and 8 of those being on target. 0-0 is a big win for Newcastle but it feels like a loss for us. It was a disappointing end as the side deserved to win and have now dropped two crucial points in a very difficult group.
Sandro Tonali received a warm welcome back to the San Siro and played a decent game. Milan should have won and could have been 3-0 up by the end of the first half but the attack were wasteful and we looked frustrated in the second half.
Rafael Leao in particular really should have scored as well as Tijjani Reijnders who wasted opportunities in the box where we should have broken the deadlock. Samuel Chukwueze got his first start and looked great coming down the wing with pinpoint crosses and a good number of attempts on goal, the big surprise was Yunus Musah who looked amazing off the bench playing in the advanced role for RLC. Musah is a brilliant mezzalla which is why it was odd he was brought in for the mediano role. It would be good to see him compete with RLC and Reijnders for a spot now. The bigger concern will be the injuries picked up by Mike Maignan and Ruben Loftus-Cheek as we have a very challenging October to get through.
The game is a big missed opportunity as the 0-0 means we need a win against Borussia Dortmund next time out and that adds pressure on the squad.
