AC Milan opened their Serie A season with a 2-0 win over Bologna on the road. Milan played a fantastic first half where Stefano Pioli’s side took their chances well and sealed the game by the 20th minute. Olivier Giroud was the star of the match as he got a goal and an assist at the ripe age of 36 to kick off his third season in Italy.
Giroud scored the opening goal of the season for Milan with an easy tap in as new signing Tijjani Reijnders played a great square ball for him in the box. Christian Pulisic had a dream debut as he scored a fantastic goal after a one-two with Giroud just outside the box before whacking in a nice shot into the far side of the goal.
Outside of the two moments of brilliance, Milan looked extremely vulnerable. The defence was shocked on multiple occasions and Mike Maignan had lots of tough tests as a result. We kept a clean sheet but we had a poor game in defence as Lykogiannis slammed the crossbar within seconds of the first whistle and the close chances for Bologna kept coming.
Milan still look to be on summer break and need to find some chemistry. Three points are always welcome but the game showed a soft underbelly which will be exploited by the bigger teams in the league. A defensive midfielder needs to be the final signing of the mercato.
