AC Milan take on Sassuolo at the San Siro this evening in the final clash of the year. Milan are coming off a frustrating draw and will be looking for some redemption ahead of the January transfer window. A tough game as Milan usually struggle against Sassuolo, the job of Stefano Pioli is on the line and the opportunity to slightly close the gap to the top sides.

Players to Watch

Davide Calabria

His sending off against Atalanta showed something is missing in the squad. There is frustration and a lack of leadership, in many ways it seems like a natural end to the Pioli tenure and the need for a shake up. Calabria needs to show his character and lead the squad in this big game to end the year on a high. Milan are coming off the Atalanta loss and a draw with relegation placed Salernitana as Pioli’s job is on the line after the UCL exit. This is the time to rally the troops and deliver a big win as the Rossoneri have not beaten the Neroverdi at the San Siro since 2019.

Domenico Berardi

If Milan were a superhero alliance, Berardi would be our nemesis. This season has shown all the veterans of the league marking their calendars to hurt us. Luis Muriel with the winner for Atalanta, Federico Fazio’s header as well as Antonio Candreva’s banger for Salernitana and it is now Domenico Berardi’s moment. It just seems poetic for Sassuolo to deal the final blow for Stefano Pioli as they did for Massimiliano Allegri in 2014 and Berardi will be the architect of our collapse.

Rafael Leao

The Portuguese winger is in a bit of a rut this season. He has produced big performances against the likes of Paris St Germain and Newcastle United in the Champions League but is fluffing chances left and right in Serie A. He has not been clinical and looks a level off his best. Leao is a world beater but he needs to keep that drive game in and out, never mind if it is PSG or Salernitana, that is what will make him the best. Sassuolo is a tricky opponent and we will not get a result without a bit of magic, let’s hope he brings it.

Prediction: Milan 1-1 Sassuolo
