AC Milan took on Lazio at the San Siro last night in the first major challenge for Stefano Pioli’s side in the new season. The stadium was sold out but had in place COVID-19 regulation hence the maximum capacity was just below 40,000. Franck Kessie returned to the starting line up while Zlatan Ibrahimovic came off the bench and Alessio Romagnoli got his first start of the season.
Milan dominated Lazio in the first half with a high press driven by Kessie and Tonali creating lots of chances up front but struggled to materialise just in front of goal. The breakthrough for Milan came just at the 45ht minute when Rafael Leao burst through the midfield and had a one-two with Ante Rebic in the box before easily placing the ball to the bottom left of the goal past Pepe Reina to make it 1-0. Milan won a penalty a few minutes later when Ciro Immobile kicked Kessie in the box, the Ivorian midfielder stepped up and beat the keeper but hit the cross bar, he attempted to head the rebound in but in went over. In the second half, Ibrahimovic came off the bench and scored in just 7 minutes with a tap in from a brilliant squared ball from Rebic. Rebic got two assists in the game while Mike Maignan kept another clean sheet.
