AC Milan’s Summer Mercato Ends In 7 Days: What Is Done and What Is Missing?

One more signing would revolutionise this squad, just a right winger and this is a serious contender.

We are 7 days away from the end of the summer transfer window, AC Milan have already completed 7 signings and 2 more should be announced shortly. We take a look at what has been done and what is missing given the two glaring gaps in the squad are yet to be addressed. Milan definitely have more depth than any point in the past decade but a bit of quality is lacking at the right wing position which is worrying. Have a look at the current squad below and how complete we think Milan are:

There are four assumptions in this line up at the time of writing:

  • Pietro Pellegri (In): The player is currently in Milan and expected to undertake his medicals and sign with the club today. The move seems imminent hence he is included.
  • Tiemoue Bakayoko (In): All the reliable journalists claimed an agreement with Chelsea FC is in place and the player has lowered his salary to join Milan. Only the final details remain thus he is also included.
  • Andrea Conti (Out): The right back has been left out of the squad for some friendlies and for the first outing of the season. Florenzi’s arrival on top of that certainly means he is out. Sampdoria seems likely but also Atalanta and Genoa are in the running for him.
  • Tommaso Pobega (Out): Given the likely arrival of Bakayoko, the is no reason for him to rot on the bench. Another loan is Serie A will do him some good as he can further grow and potentially break in next season. Torino is the likeliest destination but Cagliari and Spezia are also options.

GOALKEEPERS

Donnarumma left and we were left speechless but Maignan arrived and showed that he is an exceptional talent. Thrroughout the pre season and in the first game, he has made acrobatic saves and is great at distributing with his feet. Tatarusanu has been worrying in the pre season but hopefully he will not be playing much, although he did do wel when called upon last season. Plizzari makes it back into the squad after numerous loans and I am eager to see him get some minutes in the Coppa Italia.

DEFENCE

Tomori was signed permanently this summer which was key and Ballo-Toure was brought in as cover for Hernandez. Kjaer, Romagnoli return as well the younger players including Gabbia and Kalulu. Calabria looks to be the new captain in the interim and is excelling in his role. The defence looks solid as there are starters and depth options. We have pace and strength and this is the most complete unit we have had in years.

MIDFIELD

This includes the two CDMs and the CAM. Milan will need Tonali to step up this season as Kessie and Bennacer will miss a month or two with the AFCON. Bakayoko’s arrival is important as he adds cover and experience. The midfield unit is solid and can easily be one of the best in Italy if the players turn up. For the attacking midfield role, Diaz returned and is looking good so far but an experienced player or some cover is missing. Maldini and Krunic will likely be the cover for him

ATTACK

This includes the RW, LW and ST. Leao and Rebic return on the left and Saelemaekers and Castillejo remain on the right. The addition of Florenzi will be a small boost in right wing position but this is the problem area for the team and needs addressing. Giroud’s arrival will be a big boost for the club as Ibrahimovic battles with injury and the addition of Pellegri, that unit looks really good to play across three competitions.
