AC Milan players Laura Fusetti and Valentina Giacinti have been nominated for top honours by the AIC (the football players’ union in Italy). Vice-captain Fusetti has been nominated as one of the best defenders of last season, while Giacinti has been nominated as one of the best forwards. She faces a competitive field that includes the likes of Cristina Girelli, Barbara Bonansea, and ex-Milan player Daniela Sabatino as fellow nominees.

Giacinti scored a total of nine goals for the Rossonere last season. The low goal tally was because the 2019/2020 season was cut short due to the ongoing pandemic. Fusetti, on the other hand, recorded 92 interceptions and won 59.7% of her defensive duels at the back last season (Wyscout). Milan’s defense was somewhat of a leaky ship, as they conceded 15 goals throughout the season. However, the team’s defense has improved quite dramatically this season, as they’ve only let in six goals during the current campaign.
This is in large part due to the defensive partnership between Laura Fusetti and Laura Agard, the both of whom have been stalwarts at the back.
Speaking of Agard, she has also been shortlisted for this honor, although she’s nominated as a Fiorentina player, as she played for the Viola last year.
The Gran Galà del Calcio will be broadcast live on Sky and will take place sometime in March.
