AC Milan went head to head with the current Serie A champions Inter Milan in the Derby della Madonnina last night. The San Siro was packed with 57,000 fans to see the Milan clubs fight it out and the display lived up with an open match that could’ve swung either way, lots of emotion and two early goals.
Milan conceded two penalties in the first half from errors by Kessie and Ballo-Toure respectively. Kessie got his legs tangled with Calhanoglu while Ballo-Toure made an error while falling back leading to a crunching tackle in the box. Calhanoglu scored the first one and had the nerve to celebrate but Ciprian Tatarusanu stepped up and made a big save on the second one to deny Martinez a goal.
Milan equalised just five minutes after the first goal when Tonali’s curled in a lovely cross which forced de Vrij to score an own goal as a result of the incessant press of Tomori.
Tomori and Kalulu made goal line clearances in the game as Inter would use their one opportunity to break forth and cause issues. Defensively, we looked out of it as the left back slot was overwhelmed while Kjaer didn’t look as sharp as normal.
In the dying minutes, Milan really upped the pressure on Inter as the tempo rose with the substitutes but we could not seem to find a way through. The closest attempt came from Saelemaekers who whacked a shot from far out which dinged the sidebar but Kessie could not turn it into goal on the rebound which really dented our hopes for all three points.
The match ended 1-1 with both sides sharing a point allowing Juventus and Atalanta to draw closer but the result is a win for Milan as we remain unbeaten and joint at the top with Napoli.
