Calcio Mercato are reporting that previous reports regarding the suspension of referee Cuneyt Cekir are incorrect. The Turkish referee has not been suspended by UEFA for his awful display in the Champions League fixture between AC Milan and Atletico Madrid at the San Siro about two weeks ago. The referee has been appointed the call the game between Germany and Romania for the 2022 World Cup qualification this Friday.
They go on to state the the errors from that match have been attributed to the Head of VAR, Abdulkadir Bitigen only. He has been replaced by Huseyin Gocek following the promotion of Mete Kalkavan. He did not intervene for the mistake on the penalty awarded in the 93rd minute of that match which gave all three points to Atletico.
This contradicts previous reports we stated here from Gazzetta dello Sport regarding the matter. There has not been an official comment on the conduct of the referees from UEFA.
