Gianluca di Marzio speaking to Sky Italia via MilanNews.it is reporting that AC Milan are now looking to open contract renewal talks with captain and centre back Alessio Romagnoli after previously letting the matter slide. The defender joined the club in a difficult period from AS Roma in 2015 and was our standout player in his section of the pitch for years and was a dominant figure in the 2018/19 season where he even scored two winners. He was made captain at the start of the season following the departure of Leonardo Bonucci but struggled in 2019/20 and 2020/21 with fitness and form. Dialogues have kicked off as per the report as the management want to make an attempt to keep the defender.

In my opinion, this is the right move. Romagnoli has received lots of stick since the arrival of Simon Kjaer and Fikayo Tomori but declines in form are normal in football, these do not take away from his quality and he has shown that in the current season. He is only 26 years old and has a wealth of experience in Serie A, he has been the captain who led us to 5th, 6th in his first two seasons in the role to a 2nd place finish last year. He has 227 appearances under his belt and would be an immense defender partnering with Tomori for the coming years. This is the right move and we need quality players all across the rotation.
