MilanNews.it are reporting that AC Milan could be in for a shake up of their centre backs this summer after the impressive shifts of youngster Matteo Gabbia in the final weeks of the season. Milan currently have five centre backs on the roster with Alessio Romagnoli and Simon Kjaer as starters, Mateo Musacchio and Leo Duarte as depth and Matteo Gabbia as a prospect. The Rossoneri will reportedly look to consolidate four centre backs into the system for next season and are planning on signing one new centre back this summer. This means that two will have to be sold and then one purchased to fit the plan.
Gazzetta: Musacchio could stay at Milan because he is injured. It will be difficult for a club to come asking for him.— TeamMilanAC (@TeamMilanAC) August 9, 2020
Romagnoli, Kjaer, and Gabbia are sure to stay. But, if Milan would sign a centre-back, Leo Duarte will leave on loan. pic.twitter.com/jFDCkJRacv
The plan according to the report is to try and sell both Musacchio and Duarte this summer and to promote Gabbia to be the go-to depth player. Thereafter, one new centre back will be signed to play as a depth player or to compete with Kjaer for the starting spot. It seems to be a challenge to sell the Argentina and Brazil international respectively as they're market is not large and both have featured sparingly this season. Musacchio is currently injured and out until September/October and also bearing in mind Duarte has only been with the club one season and has barely featured sue to his long term injury and it's recurrence.
