Milan are back on track with a crucial away win

After two lack lustre draws in the past two matches, Milan had the opportunity to right the ship against a very good team in Sassuolo. Again injuries played a big role in the AC Milan starting eleven as they were forced again to play Pierre Kalulu at centre back and give Rafael Leao the start at striker. Admittedly I didn't have high expectations for this match as I thought the injuries and early start would be too hard to overcome. Well, I was wrong and Milan scored just 6 seconds into the match. This was a perfect design from the coaching staff and perfect execution by Calhanoglu and nice finish from Leao. Milan weren't done there however as they continued to press and counter attack Sassuolo. Milan had a beautiful possession leading to a goal but Saelemaekers was about a centimetre offside. Milan again struck on the counter but this time there was no offsides with Theo Hernandez bursting forward and dishing it to Saelemaekers who tapped it in.

The second half on the other hand saw Milan sit back and defend Sassuolo. There wasn’t a lot of Milan attacking action but the team still looked composed enough to keep a clean sheet. Milan did have a few chances to put the match away but they couldn't find that final touch to put Sassuolo to sleep. The in the 89th minute Sassuolo had a free kick on the edge of the box and Domenico Berardi snuck it through the wall it bring Sassuolo within one. After what seemed like an extremely long added time, Milan got the victory placing them still at the top of the Serie A table.

STARTING LINE-UP

Gianluigi Donnarumma: Gigio played well again. Commanded his area and made saves when needed. Aside from one misplaced kick he was very good. 6.5/10

Davide Calabria: Calabria continues his good run of form. I thought he played well for the majority of the match but once Boga came on he did struggle with his pace and skill. 6.5/10

Pierre Kalulu: A very nice bounce back match for the young Pierre Kalulu. He was excellent today and his positioning was on point. He has promise and I believe once everyone returns he should get some matches in at right back. 6.7/10

Alessio Romagnoli: Alessio was a brick wall against Sassuolo. Nothing got by him on the ground or in the air. I don't blame him for the free kick outside of the box because the players in-front of him should have closed down Boga. 7/10

Theo Hernandez: Theo was great on both ends of the pitch. Defensively him and Alessio locked down that left side and Berardi. His runs going forward annihilated the Sassuolo defence and created chances for Milan. 7/10

Franck Kessie: Franck had a nice bounce back performance. He was tracking back nicely in this match and was nearly flawless but he did pick up a yellow and he is suspended for the match against Lazio. 6.8/10

Sandro Tonali: I thought Sandro played a steady match with few errors. However he picked an injury that could also see him sidelined against Lazio. 6.5/10

Alexis Saelemaekers: His work rate is something that is vital to Milan. He runs up and down the pitch and really gives his all for the team. It was nice to even see him get on the scoresheet with a goal. 6.5/10

Brahim Diaz: I thought Brahim played a bit better but he still holds onto the ball for too long. Again I don't think we should purchase him. 6/10

Hakan Calhanoglu: Hakan really controlled the offensive game for Milan. He was brilliant on the first goal and from that point on he dictated play. 6.7/10

Rafael Leao: Finally Leao started at striker and it worked out. His finish on the first goal was nice and composed. On the offside goal he showed nice skill to free himself up and pass it to Hakan. Of course there is room for improvement but good match. 6.5/10

SUBSTITUTES

Rade Krunic: I am begging to not have any faith in Krunic. He gives the ball away too much and he doesn't offer much to the team. Players get by him too easily. 5.5/10

Jans Petter Hauge: Hauge looked more comfortable in this match than previous Serie A fixtures. However, in the wall you cannot be scared the block a shot. That mistake took away the Milan clean sheet. 6/10

Samu Castillejo: N/A

Daniel Maldini: N/A
