MilanNews.it are reporting that AC Milan captain Alessio Romagnoli is close to a return after suffering a calf injury toward the end of the previous season. The centre back has been direly missed and will be a welcome addition to a squad that missed out on signing an additional centre back in the summer transfer window after a number of deals fell through over the course of the window. The defender will reportedly return to training with the group today as Milan prepare for the derby della Madonnina next weekend.
Romagnoli will likely take over from youngster Matteo Gabbia if he is seen to be fit enough by manager Stefano Pioli returning to the formidable partnership with Simon Kjaer that did incredibly well last season. Gabbia and Kjaer are yet to concede a goal in the league in this campaign but have not faced any top tier opposition yet hence the next game will be a huge test for the pair.
