AC Milan have signed Sevilla defender Simon Kjaer on loan. The Denmark international has cut short his loan at Atalanta to join the Rossoneri. Here's a look at what he brings to Milan:

Awareness and Vision

Kjaer is the type of centre back who comfortable with the possession game and is good with short passes. His awareness of the play makes him a desirable fit for the Serie A as he knows how to track runs, cut off passing lines and block the ball outside the box. Kjaer has good acceleration thus is able to burst forward either to attack the opposition or to carry the ball out of danger areas but often likes to play it safe and is constantly clearing the ball from the danger zone.

Experience and Composure

Milan have missed an experienced centre back since the departure of Alessandro Nesta in 2012 and they have struggled to fill this spot with the likes of Philipe Mexes, Alex, Gabriel Paletta and Leonardo Bonucci. None really worked out but each offered something in their short spells with the club. Mexes brought an X factor to Milan, Alex brought solidity, Paletta helped mould Romagnoli and Bonucci demonstrated the need for a passing defender. Kjaer will offer something from his vast experience and his composure will be an asset given the nervousness around Musacchio and Caldara this past year. Kjaer could play a significant role at holding down the fort for a year or two while Milan develop a younger centre back to partner Romagnoli without the pressure of being a starter.

Expect Some Goofs And Some Surprises

This is one comparison that comes to mind when I recall watching any game or highlights of Kjaer. Mexes. He reminds me so much of our former hothead centre back who always kept us on the edge of our seats for the wrong reasons. Musacchio has been quite error prone and people are not fans as a result but Kjaer is a blooper reel waiting to happen if all goes wrong. At his best, he can be a rock solid centre back who can lead the line, make last ditch tackles and can marshal any attackers but at his worst he is a game changing mistake waiting to happen.

A Leader

The most exciting trait that Kjaer brings to Milan is his leadership experience and his determination. Kjaer is the Denmark national team Captain and just led his national side to the Euro 2020s finishing second in their qualifying group. He has 95 caps with his national side and will be looking to get to his 100th cap in the summer of 2020 hence will want to play regularly for Milan to keep his form up for the Euros. Romagnoli has done well to command the defence but looks like he needs some help and some level heads playing alongside him, Kjaer could be the perfect match between experience and youth at CB.

Aerial Superiority

Kjaer does have a particular dominant area which is his aerial ability. He will be a huge upgrade over both Musacchio and Duarte in the air and to a large extent will be able to cover Romagnoli’s lax aerial fight. Milan have been losing aerial duels in the box and we have conceded many times from set pieces as a result. Kjaer will offer a massive reinforcement in this regard as well as offering another good option when Milan are attacking from corners alongside Ibrahimovic. Kjaer has significant experience and can read the game well hence he will be able to help sure up Milan’s aerial defence.
