Milan Derby Player Ratings: Inter Milan 2-0 Milan

A questionable starting eleven leads Milan to a failed derby

After a fairly poor performance against Hellas Verona Milan had the opportunity to secure a victory against Inter Milan in the much hyped Milan derby. Coach Marco Giampaolo shocked everyone once again when he gave Rafael Leao his first start in a Milan jersey. Giampaolo also insisted on playing his 4-3-1-2 formation at the start of the match. Like every other match so far this season Milan were completely lost and out of sync. Giampaolo's choice to start Lucas Biglia over Ismael Bennacer is completely baffling in my opinion. For the majority of the first half Inter dominated and had the majority of the scoring chances. But in a surprise twist Milan actually played decent football and for the last 15 minutes of the half they looked like the better team.

Surely Milan would have a better second half after they dominated the last portion of the first half right? Well no, once again Milan looked like a shell of themselves and they struggled to string together an attacking play. Milan’s defence could only hold on for so long and they broke when Inter’s Brozovic took a shot on goal and deflected to end up in the back of the net. Inter later scored again off a Lukaku header. Next Milan will now face Torino on September 26th.

Let’s now give the player ratings for AC Milan against Inter. Sound off in the comment below and follow us on Twitter @SBNRossonero

STARTING LINE-UP

Gianluigi Donnarumma: To put in simply Donnarumma is just world class, on numerous occasions he bails this team out of extreme trouble. If Gigio wants an extension Milan should pay him anything he wants. 7/10

Andrea Conti: Conti got the chance to prove himself as Davide Calabria was suspended because of a red card. Conti fell flat on his face as his mistakes were directly linked to both goals scored by Inter. Going forward he wasn't too bad but defensively he was lacking. 4.5/10

Alessio Romagnoli: Romagnoli faced a lot of pressure in this match and it was impressive how Milan withstood all the chances created by Inter. However Romagnoli was covering Lukaku on his goal and his poor positioning is what led to Lukaku burying the chance. 6/10

Matteo Musacchio: Another decent performance from Musacchio surprisingly. He wasn't the best but he made up for many mistake made by Andrea Conti. Musacchio seems to be improving a little bit every game. 6/10

Ricardo Rodriguez: Well this was one of the worst performances I have seen from Rodriguez in Milan colours. He made numerous mistakes defensively and one of his passes back to the keeper almost ended up in the back of the net. On ball Rodriguez looks like a mess. 4/10

Franck Kessie: This was Kessie’s 100th match in a Milan jersey. Kessie wasn't involved too much in this match but he had moments where he was bullying the Inter midfield around. He made a few decent runs with the ball but overall it was nothing special out of Kessie. 5.5/10

Lucas Biglia: Our Site Manager Muqqaddam Malik put it best “Biglia is a slug”. This perfectly exemplifies how Biglia plays. He constantly slows the play down and has little spacial awareness. Biglia shouldn't be starting for this team. 4/10

Hakan Calhanoglu: After getting Milan 6 points in the past two matches Calhanoglu had a underwhelming performance. Surely Calhanoglu was only given the starting nod because there was a “discussion” between Giampaolo and Paqueta. 5.5/10

Suso: Suso had some good and some really bad moments in this match. At times Milan relied on him to create chances for the team and he had a few. Inter also stifled Suso numerous times on the right side. One Suso moment that stuck out was when he ripped the ball off Stefano Sensi and then broke into a counter attack but, he made all the wrong decisions as he shot instead of passing it to a wide open Leao. 6/10

Krzysztof Piatek: Usually Piatek gets zero chances a game because Milan is so poor at creating. However in this match Piatek had a few chances but was unable to capitalize. Yes Piatek was isolated in the box but he didn't bring anything to the match. Giampaolo should experiment playing Rebic or Leao in Piatek’s role. 5.5/10

Rafael Leao: It was a beautiful sight watching Leao actually trying to create scoring chances. He showed that he has the pace, skill and potential to be a big contributor for this Milan side. This proves Leao should be given more chance to succeed. 6.5/10

SUBSTITUTES

Lucas Paqueta: Almost right away Paqueta made his impact felt as he picked the ball up at half and dashed into Inter’s defence. Paqueta was animated throughout the match showing his frustrations every time Milan messed up in the attack. That is exactly what Milan need to turn the tide. 6/10

Theo Hernandez: Hernandez got his first action after previously injuring his ankle before the season. Simply Hernandez came in and ran. He brought pace to a defeated squad and even created a chance all by himself coming ever so close to scoring. Hernandez should be a Milan starter. 6.5/10

Ante Rebic: Rebic came on late and didn't have much time to make an impact. He showed some flair but nothing substantial. As previously mentioned I believed Leao, Rebic and Suso should be given a chance to see how they can produce. 6/10
