Milan lose on penalties but again show promise under Giampaolo

The third and final preseason game for AC Milan saw them take on Manchester United in Cardiff. Again Milan played with a cobbled midfield but the rest of the starting eleven could be seen as the starters for the beginning of the season. Again in this match Milan looked like a different team from last season. Under Giampaolo the team presses and is passing with fluidity. Needless to say this team is more fun to watch. A poor defensive display from Calabria and Musacchio resulted in a Man United score. Suso then equalized with a great strike from outside of the box and at halftime it was 1-1.

At the start of the second half Milan came out slow but as time went on the squad found their footing. Many players looked very comfortable on the ball and this lead to them breaking the press of United. During the second half Milan’s Samu Castillejo scored after Suso sent in a beautiful cross. Calabria and Musacchio then made another mistake which allowed United to answer back in the 72nd minute. After 90 minutes the teams drew 2-2 and in ICC the match must go to penalty kicks. Manchester United won on penalties 5-4 as Daniel Maldini failed to convert his penalty for Milan.

STARTING LINE-UP

Gianluigi Donnarumma: There wasn't much to do for Donnarumma in the saves department but he did have a lot of work with the ball at his feet. Donnarumma still needs to improve this aspect of his game but all signs point to him getting better. 6.5/10

Davide Calabria: Frankly Calabria was fairly poor in this match. It seemed that he couldn't handle the pace of Marcus Rashford on the right side. Both goals could be directly linked to mistakes made from Calabria and Musacchio. 5/10

Matteo Musacchio: Well to put it bluntly Musacchio was pretty horrible in this match. He constantly made mistakes and both goals were scored from chances on the right side. 4.5/10

Alessio Romagnoli: Time and time again Romagnoli is the best part of the defence. If he is partnered with someone who is better than Musacchio then magical things could happen. 6.5/10

Ricardo Rodriguez: A fairly solid performance from Rodriguez during this match. However he just doesn't bring the pace to the squad that is needed in this narrow formation. 6/10

Fabio Borini: Again Borini played extremely hard for the time that he was on the pitch. It doesn't matter where Borini is on the pitch just know that he will give it his all. 6.5/10

Lucas Biglia: Solid effort from Biglia in this one and he looked a lot better than in their match against Benfica. He got rid of the ball quickly and distributed to others to create scoring chances. Oh and it helped that none of his giveaways led directly to a United goal. 6/10

Hakan Calhanoglu: Finally Calhanoglu is showing Milan fans what he can do. He distributed the ball all over the pitch and looked sharper than usual in the final third. Of course there is room for improvement but hopefully he continues good form. 6.5/10

Suso: What a terrific performance from Suso in this match. He seems to be adjusting to his new role in the attacking midfield beautifully. Giampaolo said after the match that Suso is in a different class and it seemed like it in this match. 7.5/10

Krzysztof Piatek: Finally Piatek gets more service but sadly he failed to convert any chances. Piatek looks a tad unfit which is to be expected in the preseason. Hopefully once the season starts his scoring continues. 5.5/10

Samu Castillejo: Much like the other games during the preseason Castillejo fails to finish at the most critical times. He does seem dangerous in attacking positions but just can’t seal the deal. 5.5/10

SUBSTITUTES

Pepe Reina: Reina came in and played solid as per usual. Good to have a backup keeper with this much experience. 6/10

Andre Silva: Amid all the speculation about his exit from the club Silva actually played in this match. It looks as if Silva is trying so hard to prove that he is something but all his attempts fell flat in this one. 5.5/10

Rade Krunic: Again Krunic got some playing time near the end of the match. Thankfully in this game he saw more of the ball but he didn't do much. He seems to be a solid backup option. 6/10

Jack Bonaventura: Finally Jack is back in action for Milan. After being out 8 months he returns to action and it seems like he is almost ready to play. Jack is full of quality and could be a great asset to this team. 6/10

Ivan Strinic: Surprisingly Strinic wasn't to blame for any goals in this match. I guess we could say he's getting a bit better. 6/10

Andrea Conti: Like Calabria Conti struggled in this match. He didn't add much in attack and looked a bit out of place on defence. 5.5/10

Daniel Maldini: Maldini actually made some plays in the 30 or so minutes he played in. Maldini has shown promise in the preseason and with more experience could break through to the first team in the years to come. 6.5/10

Matteo Gabbia: Gabbia came in and played much better than Matteo Musacchio. Gabbia and new singing Duarte could see more time if Musacchio fails to perform. 6.5/10

Marco Brescianini: Didn't notice Brescianini much once he entered the match. There were a few nice tackles that he made but nothing eye popping. 6/10
