Rossoneri Round-up for 23 May: Maldini: ‘Friendship’ with Gattuso won’t determine his fate

Paolo Maldini insisted yesterday that his friendship with embattled Milan manager Gennaro Gattuso won’t play any part in determining if Milan will seek a change at the manager position.

Maldini told DAZN:

I have to do my job and evaluate Gattuso, we’re not teammates anymore.

You must have respect for the people you are working with. We are both here to help make this club work in the best way it possibly can. Our views can be different, but our friendship helps us to overcome our differences.

However, I will have to evaluate the job he has done in a cold and detached manner. We have different roles at the club, and we’re not teammates anymore.

Gattuso the manager is not the same as Gattuso the legendary player. It’s nice that Milan has brought back a number of club legends, such as Maldini, to Casa Milan, but if Milan are to take the next step up back into the elite in Europe, then simply being content with a former playing great learning how to be a manager while at the club isn’t gonna cut it. Plus, it’s always awkward to let them go, as seen when both Clarence Seedorf and Pipo Inzaghi were sacked.

It’s hard to see Gattuso lasting past this season, and maybe that’s not exactly fair on him, but at the end of the day, Milan is a club that should be in the running for the top managers in the world. Gattuso might be a top manager one day, but he’s not right now.

On to the links.
