The rumors never die, do they? Despite the transfer window closing less than a week ago, reports have surfaced that AC Milan is interested in FC Porto captain Hector Herrera.

Herrera was one of Mexico’s star performers in last year’s World Cup in Russia, and there have been plenty of rumors linking the midfielder with a move to a “bigger” club. AS Roma, Inter Milan, and others have all been linked with a move for the 28 year-old in the recent past. He’s also on the last year of his contract and he’s also reportedly not signed a new deal.

Since he’s due to be a free agent, Herrera is free to negotiate with any club about a new deal while Porto will be desperate for him to sign a new deal with the Portuguese club.

Herrera’s appeared in 35 matches in all competitions for Porto this season, scoring four goals. Before coming to Europe, Herrera came up through the youth system at Mexican club Pachuca, the same club that produced PSV Eindhoven stars Hiring Lozano and Erick Gutierrez.

So will Herrera move to Milan? Herrera’s name has been linked with a number of different clubs in Spain and Italy over the past year or so as a new deal has been worked on, so there is a strong likelihood that all of these rumors are just the words of his agent looking to get his name out there in the press and put some pressure on Porto. Of course, he’s still without a new deal, so perhaps there is some truth to the rumors.

Milan landing a player such as Herrera on a “free” deal would be a good move for the club, make no mistake. He would be a valuable addition, and he wouldn’t cost as much in transfer fees as other potential midfield targets, Just don’t get too excited about him coming, as all of this might be just a way to get a better deal at his current club or a different club entirely.
