According to a report from Calcio Mercato, AC Milan's captain Alessio Romagnoli spoke to Technical Director Paolo Maldini about the possibility of rehiring Gennaro Gattuso to be the manager of the Rossoneri. The conversation reportedly took place after the firing of Marco Giampaolo before the management had settled on Stefano Pioli. During the same period, the club had a well documented pursuit of former Inter Milan boss Luciano Spalletti fall through.

Giampaolo had four losses in his opening seven games and Pioli now has two losses in his opening four games with Napoli, Juventus and Parma the upcoming fixtures. In the entirety of last season, Milan only lost eight games under Gattuso.
