Player Ratings: AC Milan 2 - 1 AS Roma

The first points of the season come in dramatic fashion...

In what would prove to be an enthralling game of football, where VAR disallowed two goals for either side, AC Milan got the better of AS Roma at the death to clinch a 2-1 victory at the San Siro.

Player Ratings:

Gigi Donnarumma – 5.5 (Flop of the Match)

Another disappointing game for the young keeper who looks absolutely uncomfortable in his passing. Was guilty of over-committing on Roma’s goal and did not properly punch the ball away, allowing Fazio to eventually get a shot into the net. That being said, he did deny El-Shaarawy a couple times to keep Milan in the game.

Davide Calabria – 6.5

When compared to the Napoli game, this was a much improved performance from the young full back. Calabria linked up well with Suso, while still staying alert to deal with his defensive duties for the most part. Tired a bit to the end of the game.

Mateo Musacchio – 7.5

Admirable performance from the CB. Flung his body and made life extremely difficult for Edin Dzeko

Alessio Romagnoli – 8.5 (MOTM)

On return to his old stomping ground the young Milan captain was once again rock solid at the back. Kept Roma’s attackers quiet and was crucial in providing cover for his partner Musacchio.

Ricardo Rodriguez – 7.5

Had an outstanding first half but tired toward the end of the match. When on the attack he was a constant thorn in Roma’s side. He was rewarded for his hard work in the 1st half, eventually breaching Roma’s defence and delivering a delightful cross across the face of goal which Kessie dispatched into the net.

Lucas Biglia – 7

Following an abject performance against Napoli, Biglia responded by proving his class in the middle of the park. What he lacked in pace, Biglia made up in experience. Distributed the ball well and remained focused on his responsibilities. Keep it up Biglia!

Jack Bonaventura – 7.5

Found it tougher to deal with Roma than Napoli as he was constantly harassed and was given little space to work with. However, the former Atalanta man put in his usual shift and almost had a brilliant assist on an Higuain goal that was eventually ruled offside

Franck Kessie – 7

Still not up to his best quite yet but he did find himself in the right place to tap in Milan’s first goal. A sturdy performance from Kessie who can only get even better as the season progresses.

Suso – 6.5

Close marking and tight defending on Suso meant he was denied a lot of opportunities in his shots and passing game. The winger did have his moments though and had a few decent efforts toward Roma’s goal.

Hakan Calnaoglu – 6.5

Still looks a bit rusty, especially in his finishing. The Turk did show good movement and link up play with Higuain and should be at his best soon as his class was definitely on display at times. Was subbed off for Castillejo in the 80 min.

Gonzalo Higuain – 7.5

Another strong performance from the Argentine. Perhaps guilty of trying to do just a bit too much at times, however his exquisite assist to Cutrone was a joy to behold. Was also denied a quick reply goal, after he rounded Olsen and calmly finished, having been ruled as fractionally offside.

Substitutes:

Diego Laxalt – 6.5

In attack the Uruguayan looks good. His marking needs some work though, although he can be forgiven since he came on when Milan needed a goal

Samu Castillejo – 7

Well, well, well...looks like this boy sure can run. Came in the 80 min and was very lively with some speedy runs up the left that troubled Roma. His final ball still needs some work though.

Patrick Cutrone – 8

Higuain who? Came in late and was given one job – score. Started with a wild shot, got another chance with a header that went straight to the keeper, eventually scored the match winner in the last kick of the game. We love you Cutrone. We really do.

Gattuso – 8.5

The Milan hard-man stuck to his guns, trusting Biglia to hold the midfield and it paid off. His substitutes injected much energy to the team just when Milan seemed to fade. And his final roll at the dice, Cutrone, delivered by getting the winning goal and all three point. Gattuso haters where you at?
