Serie A has been hit with a shockwave of grief after Fiorentina Captain Davide Astori passed away in his sleep earlier today at the age of thirty-one. The Italian international fell ill to a ‘sudden illness’ during preparations for Fiorentina’s match with Udinese, and sadly lost his life during his sleep.

Fiorentina’s matchup was rightly cancelled, and due to a outpour of sadness, Astori’s former club, Cagliari, had to abandon their game with Genoa with the players not in a condition to play. This decision was met with applause from respectful spectators.

Following the cancellation of the early games, the decision was made that no fixtures will go ahead today. That of course, includes Milan’s clash with Inter.

If you have travelled to a game in Italy today, please note that this decision is to respect a life lost far too early. Please be respectful of Astori and his family, and the decision made in his wake. Italian football has lost a tremendous character, and it is only right that today’s round of fixtures are not played.
