Milan cancel out Fiorentina to earn a point in Firenze

Deserved? Nope - but it’s a slight cause for celebration

Gennaro Gattuso is continuing to galvanise his Rossoneri side, however Milan very nearly left Florence without a point.

A dire first-half resulted in a first forty-five without any goals, good for Milan, but less so for their expectant fans who are dying to witness the most basic form of footballing excitement. Goals, and wins!

Gigio Donnarumma and the crossbar came to Milan’s rescue, as he covered Giovanni Simeone’s effort with an outstretched limb before the woodwork saw Gil Dia’s effort wide.

Milan paid the price for poor positioning with danger. A silly foul by Alessio Romagnoli gave Fiorentina a dangerous free-kick, as Milan’s defense collapsed while Leonardo Bonucci’s lack of marking gifted Fiorentina a goal on the stroke of the 70th minute as Simeone headed home from a deep cross. The Viola man was completely unmarked, and had all the time in the world to bury his header with aplomb past Gigio Donnarumma, on his 100th appearance for AC Milan.

Suso tried twice to spur Milan on, with his first being saved, while the second was buried by Hakan Calhanoglu - who found it far too easy to push the ball home after Suso’s wide shot was deflected into his path.

All in all? A decent result for this Milan of 2017 - who saw out the year with a point. Let us hope that 2018 brings a better year for the Rossoneri.
