It took a bout of extra time, but AC Milan finally have reason to cheer: a victory against their inter-city rivals, Internazionale, means that they will progress into the next round of the Coppa Italia.
Nerves were tingling pregame for the rossoneri faithful. 1st choice keeper, the young Gigio Donnarumma, had been rested due to soreness. His backup, the evergreen Marco Storari injured himself in the warm-up and thus Milan's mascot - the third choice and brother of Gigio, Antonio Donnarumma, made his professional bow for the club in a crucial game.
Worries about Donnarumma senior were compounded when the mercurial Ivan Perisic fired home for Inter, only for the Video Referee to call the goal back after review. This event gifted courage back to Antonio, who performed a sweeper-keeper clearance on a surging Mauro Icardi to the delight of Milan's Curva Sud. He then performed admirably to keep Joao Mario's shot out.
At the other end, Milan drew blanks. Nikola Kalinic ghosted the game before going down injured, while Bonaventura was unlucky not to score. Patrick Cutrone came on for Kalinic and injected life into the Rossonero.
The youngster took his cue from Antonio Donnarumma's heroics and fired Milan into the lead in stopoage time, stealing the show.
We are happy and so is Gattuso, as a semi-final place is booked!
