Diego Lopez has returned to Spain, joining Espanyol on a season-long loan.
The 34-year-old joined Milan on a free transfer from Real Madrid in late 2014, making 37 appearances for the Rossoneri.
Lopez has since become Milan’s second-choice goalkeeper, thanks to the amazing Gianluigi Donnarumma (and Mihajlovic, for giving him his chance) who has kept the first-choice position since debuting last season. It’s safe to say that Gianluigi Donnarumma won’t be losing his position soon, or the next twelve years, so Diego needs to leave to get some action!
Diego had been linked with several clubs over the past few months, most notably was Chelsea FC, where he would have once again sat in a second-choice role (most likely, anyhow), but that relied on Chelsea releasing Asmir Begovic, which they didn’t end up doing.
The former Real Madrid goalkeeper will will be a direct replacement for Pau Lopez, who joined Tottenham Hotspur earlier on Wednesday.
Best of luck, Diego!
