As the transfer window closes, Milan is still in pursuit of another midfielder. Milan's opening-round loss to Fiorentina revealed there are still gaps that need filling, though that was never a secret with the club's midfield.

Rumors swirled Tuesday and Wednesday. While Roberto Soriano and Axel Witsel have been reported targets for weeks, three other names emerged as potential targets: João Moutinho, Erik Lamela and Asier Illarramendi. The latter is off the table, having joined Real Sociedad from Real Madrid.

It is likely Milan adds a midfielder before the transfer window closes. Below is a look at the four main possibilities, why Milan need them and where Milan stands in their pursuit of each player.

Roberto Soriano, Sampdoria

Why Milan Need Him: Soriano is a gifted attacking midfielder who would definitely give a boost to Milan's attack. The 24-year-old German-Italian played for Sinisa Mihajlovic last season, scoring four goals and grabbing five assists.

Where Things Stand: Sampdoria want 25 million euros for Soriano. Gazzetta Dello Sport reported Wednesday night that Milan will meet with Sampdoria to try to find an agreement.

Axel Witsel, Zenit Saint Petersburg

Why Milan Need Him: Witsel was a Milan target before he ended up in Russia in 2012. Now in his prime, the 26-year-old Belgian can give Milan a strong on-the-ball presence, something that was lacking for the Rossoneri against Empoli. Andrea Bertolacci looked lost at times.

Where Things Stand: Juventus are involved now, as Milan's interest in Witsel seems to have dissolved with the opportunity of getting Soriano. The two players are valued around the same. Turin is the likely destination for Witsel.

João Moutinho, Monaco

Why Milan Need Him: The experienced 28 year old has had a steady career with Sporting, Porto and Monaco, as well as the Portuguese national team. He can play an attacking or defensive roll, as well as on the flanks. He is also a winner, having won 12 titles in Portugal.

Where Things Stand: If Witsel leaves Zenit, Moutinho is expected to take his place in Russia. Not to mention Moutinho is out until mid-October with an injury.

Erik Lamela, Tottenham Hotspur

Why Milan Need Him: The 23-year-old winger is already an experienced player, one with incredible talent. He is explosive in the attack, with the ability to make things happen for strikers. While Harry Kane was smashing the ball into the back of the net, Lamela grabbed 10 assists in all competitions.

Where Things Stand: Lamela looks like he could be on his way to the San Siro, just not in the way Milan fans would like. According to Lamela's father, he is in talks with Inter.
