Some rare things in recent memory have happened. Milan have avenged, to some degree, the loss to Sassuolo by beating them to advance to the quarterfinals of the Coppa Italia --our Champions League! Also, Nigel de Jong scored the winner. Yes, de Jong, the defensive midfielder. Even more shocking? Giampaolo Pazzini scored a goal as well.
In Alessio Cerci's first start since his loan move, the winger made a quick contribution by assisting Pazzini's opener. And what a goal it was! A twirling body volley by the near post after Cerci's wonderful cross from the right, that nestled into the bottom far corner. It seems that Pazzo doesn't score much anymore but the quality of the goals themselves haven't decreased.
Of course, it wouldn't be Milan without a heart attack. Zapata was flagged for a penalty midway through the second half after being tangled with Leonardo Pavoletti, a call that could have went either way honestly. Nicola Sansone converted because of course he did.
But all was not lost. As the clocked ticked closer to full time, Poli --who really moves much more intelligently than given credit for-- fired a volley off the underside of the bar. And just as it looked like it would be another day of hard luck, de Jong rifled home the finish to seal the win.
