WTF Friday

Laurence Griffiths

I came across this on twitter last night and had to share it...

If more "Americans" are watching soccer today, it's only because of the demographic switch effected by Teddy Kennedy's 1965 immigration law. I promise you: No American whose great-grandfather was born here is watching soccer. One can only hope that, in addition to learning English, these new Americans will drop their soccer fetish with time.

This is a quote from the crazy pyscho who wrote this piece.  The rest of the drivel is actually embarrassing to read as an American.  I am embarrassed that people can be so close minded to something that doesn't even impact that on any significant level.  The fact that this women can't see the value of a sport galvanizing a Country, something no continental sport can do, shows how shortsighted and ignorant she can be.  At twelve noon today I didn't get a single email or call, because people were legitimately enthralled with yesterday's result and while it didn't go as glamorously as it could of with a win.  The fact that people cared that the US made it through shows the progress of where this game is in this Country and how far behind this person is.

On Tuesday, the first of July, the USA will play Belgium in the Round of 16.  Three days before Independence day, a day that gave us freedom not just from England but from silly closed mindedness like this.  While this Country is far from perfect and our freedoms are often challenged, we are free to choose what sport we like and I have to imagine the thing that scares her most is that due to immigrants like my parents and her inability to evolve she is going to extinct.  Truthfully, we are better off without her.  So if and when the US win next week and the Country can celebrate over something beyond anything a baseball or American football match can bring, I will feel better knowing she isn't part of something that amazing.
