Wednesday Milan Musings, SC Braga On Deck

By: Gianfranco | November 5th, 2008

The UEFA Cup has not been as much of a curse as everyone has made it out to be. The real curse of being a fan of a big club in the UEFA Cup is that information on opponents is very hard to find, and a scouting report is even more difficult. Milan’s next opponent, SC Braga of the Portuguese league, is no exception. What is even more frustrating is that even UEFA.com does not preview these games in a proper fashion. For a group wanting to change and tout the UEFA Cup they do not do a very good job promoting it, while we are inundated with all things Champions League, any type of UEFA Cup news is nonexistent.

As fans of the Rossoneri we have taken for granted our clubs status as a not only a Champions League winner, but a perennial contender. As we all know last season did not go as planned and we are now being given an opportunity to see how the rest of Europe’s second tier elite lives in the UEFA Cup. As I mentioned earlier it has not been all bleak and dark as once imagined, but it is certainly a tournament taking place in the shadows and in the background. We can only hope that if Milan does find success in this tournament that they raise prominence to the Cup and also to some coverage.

I don’t know much about SC Braga, but I am hoping that Carletto does. Calling for Carletto’s head is a distant memory, and his tactical moves and player choices have either been pure luck or a better understanding of how his squad operates. He has also fallen into the “this is my Serie A squad” and “this is my UEFA Cup squad.” The latter having names like Antonini, Sheva, and at times even Old Man Emerson. But Emerson has featured in quite a few games lately and he may not be available for a few weeks considering his last few performances. Dida has even made his presence known in these matches, which all and all makes projecting this match or even Carletto’s lineup.

If I had to venture a guess, I would figure to see Dida, Bonera, Kaladze, Favalli, Antonini, Flamini, Emerson, Ambrosini, Dinho, Pippo and Sheva. Regardless of the lineup the best thing for this squad as a whole is to continue winning. As many a great coach has said winning is contagious and builds a culture of confidence that is tough to shake no matter the competition. Plus being tops in the group is never a bad thing.

Darmian is highly touted but it is all based on potential. Very little game experience, and the fact that he is young makes him a bit smallish in stature. He hasnt quite filled out yet…

This post is amusing in light of A.’s insistence that the UEFA Cup has become the subject of intense media interest solely because of Milan’s participation.

    Continuing the “reality-based” theme . . .

Why would Napoli sell Santacroce? Especially in the middle of a season in which they have a realistic chance of qualifying for the Champions League? De Laurentis is not that desperate for money (and it isn’t at all clear that Milan would be prepared to spend it if he was).

Urusus, if by intense you mean here at the Milan blog, then sure, every where else, it may as well be played in deep space…

Santacroce is a tough buy, as are any defenders, when you have them you tend to hang on.

Fetyani - I was thinking the same thing about Santacroce. Chances are Napoli aren’t gonna want to let him go at any price as Napoli have a group of talented & special players. They’re not gonna want to break up that team.

Having said that if Milan throws them enough money they might decide to sell him take Cannavaro free of charge & make a push for Messi or Aguero espcially if they make it to CL next year. Sounds ambitious, but those Argentinians would do almost anything to follow in Maradonna’s footsteps.

yah i know its a long shot and a tough one. but our chances now are better, because it will only get tougher with time because he’ll get better and napoli would want to keep him.

i think it will take a couple of seasons until they sell fabiano. and he is definitely milanista. but in january you should go for ivanovic he is going to be quality and will probably be allowed to leave

The way you guys are proposing a swoop for Santacroce is not the way Milan has been doing their business on the transfer market lately. The manager has little trust in youthful players anyway, and that’s part of the reason I don’t think they will go after Santacroce. Besides, they have four full-backs on the squad already and Oddo out on loan. I would like another quality full-back on the squad for next season on and get rid of the deadwood like Oddo and Favalli, though. But I have to agree, a bid for Ivanovic would be commendable and the sooner the better.

p.s. I spoke in haste, getting under Interisi skins is fun at times.

Is he really? I haven’t seen too much of Napoli but I guess you are right, they play with a three man back line, and I took his position on the right as that of a full back. They don’t really play with true full-backs.

yea he plays on the right hand side of three man defence so covers the rb position to. maggio is a right wing back for napoli. santacroce is the perfect blend for a defender he has the pace and footballing skills of a brazilian but the tactical game and tackling of an italiano!

UEFA Cup is a big nothing, its europes version of englands carling cup or whatever its called these days.

Its just a money spinner for those who didn’t make it to the big stage, its the bollywood of european club football.

I really couldn’t give a toss. It’d be mighty embarrassing if we got knocked out early by some useless team but its not going to mean all that much if we win it.

concentrate on the league i say!

    Nesta might be quitting football

We probably won’t buy any young defender anytime soon as some of you mentioned, but Juve’s Mimo Criscto is another good candidate.

Bah, too negative patcook. Daryl had a post on the main page of the Offside a bit ago about the positives of the Uefa cup, some of which are right on. It’s a lot more unpredictable, that’s for sure.

alessio, sure its got positives, but it cant compare to the CL.

Is it really that unpredictable? Cluj beating Roma and drawing with Chelsea was unpredictable.

    Milan are unbeaten so far.

It might be unpredictable but no more so than any other competition can be.

I want to relay a little story from this afternoon…

My friend recommended a barber to me in the next town over and stopped by after work. As I walked in the Poster of Nesta between the two barber mirros greeted me on my right and a poster of Il Capitano on my left. I was in shock, a flat screen was playing CL football and I realized I had walked into the best barber shop ever, to bad it wasnt a bar.

I chatted up the owner for a while in Italian and we recounted stories, got a haircut and left. I am hoping to schedule my biweekly cleanups for Tuesday so I can talk tactics with Joe the Milanista Barber!!

I am not convinced on Nesta yet, and will wait and see, because quite frankly we need him. As for Santacroce he put Dinho in his pocket on Sunday and I would love to have him, but the likelihood of Napoli parting ways with him while under contract are slim to none. Milan buys play out of contract and rarely makes the transfer splashes.

As for the UEFA Cup, it is what is, and because are team is playing in it we need to support it, but if the CL was a true best of the best and UEFA was the 2-4 teams things would be very interesting and very much worth watchinh…

i might be wrong, but i think santacroce is a smarter version of materazzi. hes very careless, but unlike materazzi he manages to get the ball. hes a smart klutz. but i havent seen him recover too many balls hes defended on. i’ve only seen him play in 2 games though, so its a very naive opinion of him [so far].

GF, can you please translate seedorf’s rating on datasport - http://www.datasport.it/leggi.aspx?id=5358274 - they’ve given him a 7 for the napoli game and i usually find them to be more accurate and not over the top for the winning team like goal.com is but this seems weird - i only saw the second half of the game but from whatever u guys have also said, it doesnt seem that he had a good game at all

regarding Nesta, its vey sad that such a classy defender might have to quit football in such a fashion, even merda fans admire him. as a replacement santacrose would be good but it would be a dream to have nesta. and avia you could get pipo inzaghi 9 or even a nesta 13 if he’s gonna quit you might as well do it.
