The Beginning of the End…

By: Gianfranco | February 26th, 2009

So due to the fact that I work during the day my only chance at following this game was through a gamecast today on Soccernet. It is not my favorite way to follow, but I have come to rely on it because it is fast, direct, and most of all discreet.

My first real reaction upon seeing the lineup was that Carletto was looking to defend here and maintain the flat back four to help keep the shutout. Wing play would come from the midfielders and Pato and Pippo would do what they could to score. As the game began I watched as little blue dots in front of Dida’s net, signifying shots from Bremen, now these were alarming to me because they were coming fast and in seemingly dangerous areas. Despite my fears, we earned a PK which Pirlo buried and I began to sense some sort of calm, the shots kept coming from Bremen but I was hopeful. Soon thereafter Pato nailed a seemingly very nice goal, and my mind was at ease.

At this point I decided to pack up and try and get home, at least catch the end on stream. Things never go as planned and as I frantically did my best to drive, shift the car, and follow on my IPhone, my worst fears were coming to fruition. I decided to let it rest a bit, and then the phone beeped, a simple text message appeared with the word Choke. My heart sank, stomach knotted, and I realized my worst fear. They blew it…

I sat for awhile contemplating the match prior to even looking at the comments or any post match wraps. But now that I look through it all, and see that Bremen had 29 shots with 17 on net I shake my head in disbelief and wonder how on Earth did this team get so bad so fast. 17 shots on goal!! That is not some arbitrary number, and though I don’t know how well or how poor Dida played, or if the midfield decided to close up shop and not defend, I can’t help but wonder if tonight was the beginning of the end for the squad as we know it.

I will leave the in depth match discussion to those who watched the game but as know look at the roster, the thought of rebuilding has finally hit home, sunk in, and it seemingly must be addressed. If Carletto does not canned in the next few hours, or early tomorrow it will be miracle, and his resignation should follow if that doesn’t happen. This team of pricey veterans seems to have lost the cutting edge, the eye of the tiger to play with conviction, pace, and steel. This team is a shell of what Milan teams are supposed to be and it is time for a change.

The change however is a bit hard to imagine, who leaves, who goes it always up for debate, and money is constantly a factor. I don’t have the energy or proper state of mind to begin that discussion here, this type of loss is disheartening on so many levels emotionally, that I frankly want to forget Milan for a few minutes, a few hours, possibly a few days. On a night where the owner lost his sister, and our captain having one last chance at a Cup, the team could not hold a two goal lead. A team with so much big game experience just couldn’t show up for another 45 minutes. Many of us remember the dark ages of 96 and 97 and it seems that we are entering it yet again, a fourth place finish is now a must, but even that looks bleak with the run of form, I guess we hope for the best and press on, even on what seems like the worst night since Istanbul, FORZA MILAN…to bad we couldn’t give you one more…

I hope to have something more substantial if I can get my hands on the match, but forgive if I don’t have the will to watch…

@christian. “still can’t see why you wouldn’t want to replace him.”

Because not a single valid replacement could be named by anyone. I already said i cant think of anyone else who I would rather have coaching. And so far, neither can anyone else.

Rijkaard is not good enough, imo. And for anyone who thinks carlo is tactically inept, then you must obviously forget about Rijkaard. He is the most tactically inept coach to have ever won a CL. And the only reason he did that coz he had Ten Cate who is tactically brilliant as his assistant.

Leonardo doesnt even have his coach’s liscence yet. I wouldnt mind seeing him as coach, it will be an exciting time, but he will need a lot of time to get with it. Time that most fans arent even willing to give a coach who has won multiple CL’s for them.

    Capello is not coming back.

Van Basten has much to learn.

    Leaves us with Donadoni. Hmm.

    And I’m talking realistic replacements.

    How about Costacurta? :P

Costacurta is not ready yet, he couldnt even impress in Serie B so i reckon he’d get buckled by the pressure to succeed and win titles if he immediately took over. im with Fet on this one, Leonardo might just become a brilliant coach but this team is in such turmoil right now i just dont see it as a wise decision to install a man with no or very little experience in the hot seat after Ancelotti. this team needs a disciplinarian and it could be ideal to tap up Capello and make him our interim manager now.

just like Chelsea got Hiddink to coach on a short term while also remaining Russia’s tactician Milan could approach Cappello to do the same. if Leonardo is to become coach later he could be the assistant manager to Fabio and learn from one of the greats and take-over when he’s ready. If Beckham were to stay there’s no doubt in my mind he’d relish the challenge, our club is in such turmoil he may just feel sympathy and consider it. Hey in my opinion it doesnt hurt to try.

So what if Leonardo dont have the coaching license??
when Gareth Southgate takeover the coaching spot for Boro he didn’t have the license too…
Come guys the reality is Leonardo is Berlu’s favorite man to be the next coach for us,Berlu dont like to spend money there’s only two person that can work with that policy, its Carletto and Leonardo because they know their boss reluctant on spending big…
Carletto dont ask anything and just work with the sources he have and Leonardo is seeking great young talent from Brazil and bring them to Milan without paying much…
Bringing the Rijkaard,Basten,Donadoni etc will not suit Berlu because they don’t understand what’s the club transfer policy,Infact Leonardo in my opinion is slowly building his football philosophy when he bring Kaka,Pato,Darmian,Mattioni etc to the team…

Mohammad – where exactly HAS Southgate ever got Boro??? Nowhere!

fg & Fet kinda hit on the same issue in my head that IF Leo does takeover wont it just be the same problem in that Berlo will just force his choice on the coach regardless of whats REALLY needed??

Leo is just another yes man, the only plus is that all the young guys in our squad will def feature in his plans but Leo will never say no in the same way that Carlo has never said no to Berlo

and Samuels right that we need someone to take over and kick some ass!!!!!!!

There is alot of work to be done at Milan so asking an amateur is kinda risky/crazy imo, it could only have been an idea if we Milan was already at the top

ie think chelsea after Mourinho left, all Avram Grant had to do was pretty much continue what was already there.

Whereas, our next coach, has to turn the shit around, so hell yeah, bring back Capello! :-)

Considering the no. of names discussed here for the next coach,I think I’ll put my name up for the job. No one knows my coaching style and at least it will be a surprise. Only problem is that I will be the youngest guy at the Milanello.

so after all that, all we got is Capello. Something that is never going to happen.

Realistically speaking, no one here, nor in milan can think of a person that should take over from Carletto.

    Mo! they’re in 17th place!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If u want to talk a good, shrewd manager, on a budget and making most of his squad check out Martin O’Neill at Aston Villa, not Middlesborough man

Maybe we should pitch O’ Neill!

Im not how many times Carletto have said NO to Berlu, all his aaction in milan is driven by Berlu and Galliani decision. For example the return of Sheva, the Ronaldinho transfer etc….
Well u can’t really say no to your boss….

k – if u want an immediate replacement there is rijkaard or scolari waiting in the wings

if chelsea can snag hiddink i cant see why we cant do the same with Capello and there is no one better really

in the summer there could be upto 10 candidates once the coaching seat if officially vacant

dont forget that in the same way that some players dream about playing for Milan there are some coaches who would dream to coach at the club especially to have players like Pato & Kaka at their disposal

ranjeet is currently in the frame for the job also! :-)

O’neill is one of Europe best,of course he’ll do great within tight budget he get from his boss but im talking about up and coming manager like Southgate,Pep,etc…im not talking about a good proven manager like O’neill…

and thats a great idea Avia…Hijack him from Villa but he have the longest contract deal in europe or maybe the world,i dont think Berlu would want to pay the big compensation for his switch to milan…

chelsea snagged hiddink because roman pays his salary as the russian national team coach. I am relatively certain berlu does not do the same for the English team.

We have already established that a Milan coach will always be a Milan man. That rules out scolari. Rijkaard is not better than ancelotti. Never will be. You guys think ancelotti is tactically inept, Rijkaard is much, much worse. He would not have won anything if it werent for the tactical mind of Ten Cate alongside him.

Haha,i never said i wanted southgate or Pep to replace Carletto….
somebody here talk about Leonardo don’t have coaching license to takeover from Carletto, and I said look at Southgate he took over Boro without a coaching license too…thats all…Im sure that Leonardo can takeover from Carletto without a coaching license,he can get it later IF Carletto got axed by Berlu…

Of course we wanted great coach and manager like Hiddink,Alex Ferguson,Capello etc to be the next our next coach but there’s so many young guy like Leonardo that might do the unbelieveble…So many reason why somebody outside from Milan is not suitable for the post, ultimately the one who got the nod have to fully understand the club from top to bottom…

Id give Van Basten a shot. He had the Dutch team playing pretty well. He hasnt done so well at Ajax but he’s young. Pretty similar to Rijkaard’s situation before he went to Barca. There’s not many managers who would command the respect that he would, especially at Milan.

if carlo grows balls and tells galliani and berlu to let the decisions up to him like he did now about the midweek friendlies, i would still keep him on regardless of all the idiotic decisions he has made over the last 2 years – he knows the team, the system, the league and has the brains to do this job – just give him a free rein with transfers (or at least take his goddamned input) and the team selection

So anything about today’s game now!!!! Stop the load of bullshit about Milan Vs Bremen and Ancelotti’s job. It was a nightmare. We can’t forget it.

But let us concentrate on the work at hand now. So who are all injured and not available today? Will Ancelotti be able to lineup even a meaningful team today?

Gianfranco create a Sampdoria vs Milan post for God’s sake!

This loss was depressing, and it ruined my month. We couldn’t give Maldini his last trophy, and we collapsed under the limelight. I really thought we could hold a two goal lead with all our experience. If you noticed both goals were headers, it shows our weakness on high balls. I can’t wait for Thiago Silva to win all those headers next season, and i hope Uncle Fester signs another top class CB. Playing in the UEFA cup was terrible to start with, and now we are knocked out. I hope this doesn’t lead to a major crisis and that we pick ourselves up and qualify for the real competition in Europe next year.
