Welcome to Purgatory

By: Gianfranco | May 19th, 2008

I just stomached Inter’s scudetto celebration on FSC. Why you ask would I do such a thing? As much as I love watching Paolo hoist ol big ears, there is something special about winning the scudetto, and I quite frankly I miss it. With that in mind I am going to put a positive spin on the goings on of this campaign. Sunday’s game was to little to late, and I have always joked that if Milan had saved a goal or two from their blow out wins they could have put them into the shutouts that they have suffered to the likes of Empoli earlier in the year. Udinese had absolutely nothing to play for and I will not look at that game any further than that, but I will say that Ambrosini is the man.

So where does that leave the club? Welcome to the UEFA Cup, or as one commenter called it “Purgatory” because we sure aren’t in heaven of CL and definetely not in hell in no Euro play hell, plus this cup is a piece of silverware that Milan have never hoisted. People think of this as a negative thing, but in fact it is truly a feat because they consistently played in the Champions League. What is even more important is that the door is now open for Milan to build a club capable of winning the Serie A which should be top priority. The last time Milan went on a downturn they came out strong and refound their form with a scudetto and there is no reason why the same can’t be done now.

The good news is they will begin a year of rebuilding with the services of Rino Gattuso who has confirmed that he will remain at the San Siro. I do not what was promised to Rino in his closed door meeting with Fester, but whatever it was it was sweetest enough to keep the snarling dog where he rightfully belongs. But the real question that is going to burn up the ACMilan Offside this off season is who to bring in and why?

The transfer season got off to a hot start with the addition of Flamini, but there is a talk that a young GK, Hugo Lloris, is en route well. It seems that Lloris is on the move to Serie A either way, but Palermo is also in the mix for the young French keeper. I think it is an intelligent signing but for me a goalie who could step into first team football is a much better idea. Lloris will be good for years to come but with a young goalie comes big game jitters and a fair amount of mistakes.

It is safe to say then that a GK is in the works but a defender and striker are still on the shopping list and Wednesday’s CL final will have a lot to do with that. Drogba is my favorite transfer rumor, but Tevez of ManU may also become available if he feels that he is not getting his fair shake for Sir Alex. Another striker who is been on and off the radar is David Villa who with Valencia finishing low in La Liga may make some noise to leave the club. San Siro is a great place for David even though Spanish players rarely leave the friendly confines of Spain, but if Torres can do it so can Villa.

I do expect to see a fair amount of the loan list of players, especially Darmian and Marzoretti being brought back home to solidify the back line and add depth to a team that desperately lacked it. Milan has a tradition of strong Italian based defenses, and there is no reason why that tradition can’t continue. Milan boasts a 51% Italian base and with whatever transfers over the season I would like to see that basic chemistry remain intact not only for Milan but the for the good of the Italian national team as well, but we will talk more about that as the off-season wears on.

I also want to take a minute to say thank you for all the birthday well wishes, and a bunch of praise for the Milan Offside. This family of Milan would be absolutely nothing without you guys and I hope this summer I can do a few things to give you guys some creative avenues.

On a final note, Hana reminded me that Milan’s offensive motor, Andrea Pirlo is celebrating a birthday. Happy Birthday to Pirlo!

Chad – i agree that money do go hand in hand but what about Chelsea?? They got money, are in the CL final but likely to lose Drogba???

Shev left for soley money and look at him now!

Im not arguing the money factor, it pretty much runs ALL sports at the moment.

What im arguing is dont overlook HOW much legacy DOES influence a player.

Like i said earlier, u have Drogba, firing on all cyclinders, awaiting the premier comp in football and he’s “dreaming of Milan??” go figure!

    Legacy man! ;-)

PS: commiserations to Parma who were relegated at the weekend.

I can remember their hayday with the likes of Zola & Asprilla and hope its not too long to see them back in Serie A.

for the GK debate, to me its simple: GET MARCO AMELIA
he is young, but not green in terms of serie a experience
he might be the azzurri’s heir to gigi, which will give him international experience
and i am sure he isnt looking forward to a season in serie b

the only possible drawback is he has stated he wants to play in rome, where he grew up

Gian, yea i know we’ll have a lot to discuss in due time… but it just sucks waiting :( when we get some signings it’ll surely be worth the wait *hopefully*

about the goalie situation, i have my heart set on BORUC. amelia would be great though and i dont mind giving the lloris guy a chance. after the events of a certain nelson dida in recent times i’ll gladly take lloris over him! n plus he does add youth

chris, i have great respect for milan but they simply dont have the cache in my eyes AT THE CURRENT MOMENT. yes they;’ve won many more european cups. but if that’s all it’s really about then why do you even follow the team you do? manchester united has every bit, yes even on their worst day, the amount of clout that milan has whether you’re willing to believe it or not (especially in today;s football world)….call it arrogant or ill-informed…you know it’s true.

shehan: in which way is it arrogant or ill-informed also? the european cups? well you’ve got me there but not anywhere else. is it about not playing attacking football on european nights? is it about this year? is it about last? what’s your idea of a measuring stick because in my eyes tevez to milan or ronaldo to madrid is a lateral move if it’s any kind of move.

gian: you’re pretty much right. you’d feel and probably have felt the same way when your kaka or gattuso have been reported to have been courted by other clubs who supposedly have more to offer when in your eyes they dont.

Chad, the example of Beckham is not really relevant. He was a player not likely to have been picked up buy any other major club in Europe and along comes this whopping offer from the States. It was a no brainer.

Clout and legacy is when a player chooses one club over an another given similar terms. For example, Dinho choosing Barcelona over Man Utd (I couldn’t help rubbing Matt’s nose in it a little bit more).

Money is the ultimate leveler. Chelsea is the obvious example. But history does play a part in that too. They paid rival clubs unheard of figures and paid the players record salaries to acquire them and keep them on their books where other clubs may have been able to spend less for the same players. This is because players around the world growing up look up to certain clubs which natural figures in their thinking when they make decisions as stars.

Porto won UEFA then the Champions League.
I think it might be good for Milan to be exposed to a different feel of european football to get their heads out their asses.

    Also my transfer wish: Zambrotta.

matt, please define ‘amount of clout’.

that was the question posed to you, although you shunned ‘glory’ as an effective way to describe ‘amount of clout’.

if football is not about trophies, then what is?

also lets not forget that man.utd ‘on their worst day’ were 0-3 to milan. lets not forget that shall we?

shehan- amount of clout as it relates to being able to sign big name players for starters, for the amount of worldwide interest they’d draw in say…a champions league final.

if football is about trophies then based on this year milan is a nothing team compared to man united. and they will be next year to as well based on them being in the uefa cup instead of the champs league. right? should we forget this season because it’s convinient? they’re on the same playing field. would an ancillary star like pato come to manchester united away from milan just because of the prestige that united holds? what more is it than milan’s at this moment in time? what more is milan’s for tevez to goto milan from united? none either way…hence the arrogance of someone from milan to even hint at that…it’s funny that someone’s so deluded to think that they’re in such a higher standing when they’re obviously not. if it makes you take your panties out from your crack then they’re equal to each other even on the other’s worst day.

but go ahead and jump to thinking a fan of any team other than your beloved is somehow less informed because i dont think your team is as great as mine…or you could just go ahead and remove the stick from your ass.

shit matt, for a second there i thought you were talking about prestige. apparently you’re just trying to hammer in the fact that man.utd have won more than milan this year. well slap me and call me sally, you really hit the nail on the head haven’t you? thank you captain obvious, that really will explain a whole lot to me.

one thing is simple matt, it really is. football is about winning. to be the top you have to win. milan have achieved much more than man.utd. thus theres more prestige. its a simple formula really, theres no narcissistic algorithm involved.

what more is there to judge a club then its trophies?

its facetious to try and compare man.utd’s legacy to milan. and although it comes off as an arrogant statement, its just very blunt. if you compared real madrid’s to milan, yes, you’ve got a point. maybe even liverfuckingscumpool to a certain degree. but manchester fucking united? are you kidding me?

nobody is denying you’ve currently got a great team, but please dont jump on the best-ever-bandwagon so soon. take a minute and think about what you are saying.

glory and legacy come from achievement, and nobody forgets achievement. milan has achieved much more than manchester united can ever dream of [for now]. Maldini, even seedorf, have achieved more european and international glory than manchester united. dont compare the two teams. you just can’t match man.utd to milan. its as simple as that.

Wait matt.. i think you forgot about the two trophies milan over the past season.. European super cup and the World Club Cup.. So far man utd. have only taken home the EPL which is nothing more the a domestic league cup.. and if they win tonight.. which i hope they dont since i would like to see Sheva with another CL.. they will have won 2 which would amount to the same number as Milan.. Man Utd. is only so “prestigous” for how we’ll known they have been marketed, they are no where near the legacy which is AC MILAN

Shehan – yor wasting your time, my best mate is a Man U fan, ive been through this soooooo many times.

Every ManU squad for the last 20 plus years has had to live in the shadow of the “Busby Babes” and this team also has to live in the shadow of the ‘99 CL winning squad coz………..thats the LAST time they won it! 9 whole years ago!

U really wana piss off a ManU fan?? Remind them of the World Club Cup tourney in Brazil, the Mancs got mugged!

U can argue quite easily that they are a powerhouse domestically but in Europe they havent cut it in a long while, but the signs are that Fergie is a man who learns from his mistakes and this might be the start of ManU making a serious assault on Europe year on year (u mean like Milan already do?). ;-)

For Gods sake, Fergie recently ADMITTED that they have still to catch the Madrids & Milans! And was quite honest about the 3-0 beating they got in Milan last season.

I remember watching ManU gettin thrashed by Barca 4-0 in 94 and the same Barca squad where later demolished in the CL final by our very own Milan and by the same scoreline (luv ya Capello!). :-)
