Tuesday Milan Musings: The 2nd Viewing

By: Gianfranco | September 2nd, 2008

After the second and part of a third viewing the only word that really comes to mind is disorganized. Let me say this first, the team showed a ton of ability yesterday to attack and to maintain possession but to be satisfied with yesterday’s performance is like being from Milan and settling to be an Inter fan instead of rooting for Milan.

The disorganized started early with Carletto choosing to field four defenders, out of necessity mind you, who had worked very little together in the preseason. He also opted for an xmas tree with Pippo as the star because Pato is well still young, and Sheva has just returned. I just hope this doesn’t become when Borriello is back and healthy, he is and should be the first choice man for the top of the formation.

Believe it or not at one point last night Milan had two strikers on the pitch and only three defenders. I know it is hard to believe, but when Ancelotti should have pushed the issue and go for the jugular he seemed to second guess himself, and furthered the issue by removing the one man who did it all for Milan on Sunday, Ambro, and added the single man who has absolutely done nothing for Milan, Emerson.

Speaking of Ambro, I know that many of you believed that Dinho was the man of the match and he certainly deserved honorable mention, I will admit that, but it was Ambrosini who was the most valuable person on the pitch. He won countless fifty fifty balls, he scored Milans only goal, and tracked back when Janks was in the attack. Dinho played well, but looked lazy, without Ambrosini it would have probably been 2-nil.

Onto Dinho, his flashes of brilliance were ever-present, and as a fan of good football I can’t wait to see him continue on this pace, but he still has a way to go. The continuing of runs to the goal, and the movement across the box needs to come back, I know he is capable of it, and it seems like he wants to do it, but he will have continue to find match fitness. Again as a fan here, if he does, things will be fun to watch…

Lastly, the lack of finishing in this squad yesterday was awful. I can not even count the number of chances that were botched but none stick out more than Sheva’s missed sitter in the 55th minute. I know he hasn’t played in what seems likes years, but that goal yesterday would have changed the game, and would have gone a long way in the eyes of the tifosi. Pippo was not all that fantastic either, and Pato is still showing his lack of experience. How long before Borriello is ready? If he can get on the end of the passes it is hard to not give him something like 20 goals on the season.

The one thing that softens this blow a bit is the fact that Juve, Inter, Roma, Napoli, Samp, and Fiorentina all drew, so the gap is small. The other nice thing is the fact that after watching a few of these games, the style, pace, and flair of Milan’s play was better than most. Now if we can get some luck, and maybe points at home this team should be able to move forward with a positive outlook.

Oh yeah HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the Duck…

My friend, and sometimes commetor on this blog Chad is a big Arsenal fan and we have this debate about Arsene Wenger all the time. He is a genuis, but he has a high moral standard, because he doesnt personally beleive in overpaying for players so even if he had the cash he would do things the “wenger” way.

Agreed Gian…we have described him as the Billy Beane (GM of the cash strapped and often times playoff baseball Oakland A’s) of Soccer. If the numbers are correct Wenger was told he had 30 mil to spend this past weekend, and yet he didn’t dent it…why? Because the right pieces weren’t there for him, so he doesn’t just spend on over-priced talent that doesn’t fit his system like the rest of the EPL has begun to do.

Wenger would never come to Italy. He has repeatedly stated comments that can only be described as disdainful.

Also, I have to say that Serie A has already done all it could to ruin what has the potential to be a beautiful season. Some Napoleatani criminals did stupid things, and now all of Napoli fans are banned. Instead of doing the easy thing, which is to ban the entire Napoli fans, why not do the difficult but right thing: fight against the thugs and weed them out.

But no, the FIGC didn’t do any of that and instead did something even dumber: ban Milan fans from going to the Marassi. Why? Because 13 years ago someone got killed. We can’t keep holding grudges and living in fear of things that happened decades ago. If that were the case, then most EPL teams would be playing behind closed doors to this day. England got its act together and rooted out the thugs and worked hard to create a sporting atmosphere. Why can’t Italy do the same?

Because of the stadium issue. I think it all goes down to that. Serie A and Italy cannot improve until clubs own their own stadiums. It goes deeper than that, but until clubs can take more control of development (bring more people in) then ultras won’t be as under pressure. If there’s 5,000 people at a Coppa match and members of the 1,000 supporters cause trouble, who is either going to a. care or b. crack down on them, unless it’s something like there’s a killing? But if the stadium’s full with other fans, there won’t be the economic/visual incentive to tolerate it there is now. Anyone who has been to Italy recently knows that almost in all cases, the stadiums are woefully behind the times.

    FORZA MILAN !!!

I’m glad to see some entertaining soccer at least, it is a long season and i think we have enough to pull through on a great season this year. Although a loss to Bologna does bother me, I think I will just be part of the growing pains necessary for this team to mesh.

    peace.

Saw an article today with a high up milan official, not fester or Berlu, saying that the current team consisting of 8 strikers and no defense is a poor setup and Carletto will find it hard to succeed. This is coming from front office people, granted it may be a secretary, but the grumblings are everywhere.

It begs the question would you rather see entertaining football and lose or see boring football and win?

As long as we win i dont care!

I thought last weeks match was V entertaining but then we walked away at full time licking our wounds.

We were very entertaining last season and all we managed was a 5th place finish!

My opinion has always been that you need to learn to win first THEN move to include flair. (Im sure Arsene would disagree lol!)

They’re not going to give me anything for winning so I’d rather have the best thing that they will possibly give, and that is some good football. It would be even a better treat if it were winning, good football.

gian, i guess time will be the judge!

but for now only one thing is for certain, we must support this team through thick and thin with whatever resources the team has. be it 9 strikers or 2 defenders, this is my club and i will support it until i die. and until the next transfer window, we should support all the players that play for this great club, and do our best to show them confidence and love that we, the tifosi, have for the rossoneri.

Paolo Maldini believes the defeat to Bologna was unlucky, but realises “Milan’s biggest problem is balancing all these attacking players.”

The Rossoneri unveiled new signings Ronaldinho and Andriy Shevchenko on Sunday in a 2-1 home loss to recently promoted Bologna.

“Unfortunately we started where we left off last season,” sighed the captain. “I don’t think we deserved to lose, as we had the better of the play and just failed to convert our many chances.

“There is a structural difficulty when facing teams who come to San Siro and focus on the counter-attack. We were also unlucky.”

The challenge of putting so many attacking figures in a starting XI prompted Carlo Ancelotti to switch to a Roma-style 4-2-3-1 system in the second half, but this left them open to Bologna’s counters.

“Balance has to be found between players, systems and even the level of form on any given day. It’s not easy to play that many attacking players and I think that is the biggest problem for our Coach.

“It all depends on how the game develops. If you can take the lead, then it all changes and for a forward-thinking side like ours it leaves extra space to run into.”

The Rossoneri have changed a great deal over the summer, investing heavily in Ronaldinho, Shevchenko, Marco Borriello, Mathieu Flamini, Gianluca Zambrotta and the returning Christian Abbiati.

“Those who join this team must accept competition,” added Maldini. “This side has been at the top of its sport for 20 years now and a player has many advantages playing for Milan, but also this disadvantage of fighting for places.

“We now wait to have all our players back to full fitness and are training to be ready for Genoa, so we can take back those points we missed out on in Week 1.”

Anyways some family is flying in from Sicily tonight until Wednesday so I won’t be on the computer much until then :( just want to let you guys all know so you don’t think that I disappeared off the face of the earth :P Hope to be back soon!

Reason #3652 why Paolo Maldini rocks at life: his clarity. Completely spot on with everything, as always, especially concerning the massive headache Carletto faces with the sudden influx of attacking players.

Have fun there Ro, sounds cool.

Mourinho failed to mention that you might also lose a few fans for boring people to death, something his teams are quite capable of doing at times.

This week on “Carlo’s Headache: ‘How the Hell am I Going to Play all of these Players Together’”, broadcast in some countries as “Get Me Another Cigarette”…

Flamini not fond of full-back idea

Mathieu Flamini could be pushed into a full-back role, but warns Milan he is not fond of tactical experimentation.

Carlo Ancelotti is considering every option to fit Kaka, Ronaldinho, Andriy Shevchenko, Clarence Seedorf and Andrea Pirlo in the same line-up and for a brief period during the 2-1 defeat to Bologna, Flamini was fielded as a full-back.

“I do it if it is necessary,” said the not entirely content former Arsenal star in the Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Ancelotti asked me to go back into defence because Marek Jankulovski had some fitness problems and I like to help the squad.

“I had also played this role a couple of times at Arsenal, but I discussed his matter with Arsene Wenger and told him my natural position is in midfield.”

The Rossoneri showed flashes of brilliance against Bologna, but were left hopelessly exposed by counter-attacks. Can Ancelotti ever balance the team?

“You need to talk a lot on the field, work hard on tactics during the week, learn how to attack and defend as a unit,” continued Flamini.

“I know what I need to do and when I have to run. Everyone has their job in a team.”

Oh dear. Well, I really like Flamini in midfield, so here’s to hoping that won’t change. I don’t see how making him a FB would help matters either, aside from creating more space for more offensive-minded players. I don’t envy Carlo’s job right now…
