Thursday Milan Musings, EPL vs. Serie A
By: Gianfranco | July 3rd, 2008I wasn’t going to post today but after reading all the EPL vs. Seria A comments so masterfully argued I wanted to hop in with my thoughts and raise a few points to maybe continue an excellent discussion.
I do want to say something right off the bat, in terms of styles of play Serie A is still king in my book. The ball movement, the intelligent play, the chess type tactics are all things that are still lacking in the EPL. Even though the success was in the hands of the EPL this year on the pitch I do believe that Italian teams will win the majority of games more often than not against the likes of the EPL’s big four. The reason I believe this is purely tactical Chelsea, Pool, Arsenal, and Man U for the most part play their game, they may change personnel or even formations but their style is readily known and once digested can be counter acted fairly well. You can see this plain as day when they play each other to nil-nil draws time and again in the EPL because they can counter act each other, but Italian teams are versatile and can really challenge you both on mentally and physically and exposing weak parts of the squad and emphasizes strengths on their side. The best example of this being Milan losing to Man U but neutralizing CRon and playing behind their generally attacking midfield to get the win in the CL semifinals. Do you thing Alex Ferguson brought in Hargreaves because of his attacking ability, no he brought him in because the need for a destroying type midfielder to replace Scholes was very apparent against Milan.
Off the pitch however, is a different story between the EPL and the Serie A, and the biggest different is revenue. The EPL is not the biggest money making league in the world, but their ability to generate revenue not only in the packed stadiums but through TV deals and marketing of clubs is second to none. The FA/EPL is a well oiled money making machine and their ability to put a palatable product in a ton of homes is very helpful in terms of making money.
The most prominent thing was mentioned by JP, and that is the English language, which is readily spoken making the EPL an attractive game. For me the EPL is also a plus for many fans across the world because their players are well represented in this league from Africa and so on, making them fan friendly across the globe. Those TV deals that also work their way into so many homes, is supplemented by a live product which in England generates far more revenue for clubs than it does in Italy. In fact the TV deals even entice viewers to go to a live match by making it harder to watch your team at your home if you are in the area of the stadium with blackouts and so on, almost forcing you to the pitch.
With variables like these it is hard to argue that the EPL is in the business of making money and their clubs are benefiting from it. We are embarking on an era where the EPL big four are dictating the transfer market and that makes things harder for every other league. Serie A had their day in that regard and did well selling and buying players for large sums such as Henry, Zidane, Ronaldo, and Veron. When Man U can stave off an 60M bid for CRon and retain his skills and marketability it just shows that right now they are at the top when it comes to clout and power.
I respect Chelsea and have always enjoyed rooting for them in the EPL but their reckless purchases of whoever they see fit is not all that good for the game. If they do buy both Robinho and Arshavin they will have roster containing almost two teams of superstars meaning that these players are not available to other teams, and their values are overinflated if they ever want to actually leave Chelsea for some formidable playing time.
This whole EPL holding the cards theory really scares me because unless something changes, and I have no idea what that can be, then EPL will continue to dictate the market and other leagues will only fight for players that were not gobbled up, or worse fight to hang onto their talent and bankrupt their accounts to pay wages similar to the EPL. It really becomes a vicious cycle because if you have a player, X, and Chelsea wants him, you can value him as high as 40M and they will pay it. Sure you will make a buck to sell him, but you have just totally ruined the entire transfer market system by overvaluing a player that may have been worth 20M, but because Chelsea can pay the value doubled.
I don’t really see a quick fix for this, unless EPL teams do terribly in the all competitions. This would help show them that money and players does not equal success and force them into a more legitimate system of growth and transfer to make competitive teams, and not mercenaries. But this is hard pressed to happen and only time can dictate how all this shakes out. Serie A/FIGC can start things off though and increase the competitive nature of Serie A and making a more attractive product for fans in the country and out. We all love Milan and in turn enjoy Serie A, but ask yourself why, and then figure out how to get that reason into the minds of many others.
I don’t think Serie A is shot or lost, they just need to get back into a place to compete as strong product against the other leagues in the world, and believe it will come, it always does these things are cyclical, but until then teams like Milan need to find a way to compete. This may mean running some debt, or keeping players that are younger, or that help stabilize the team instead of promising superstars to bolster the squad.
Had Milan kept Gila many of use may have been a bit confused, but ultimately they would not have had a striker crisis this season and may actually had a semblance of team unity. Instead we are being embarrassed by the likes of Arsenal and Barca who are out of our league in the Adebayor race, and getting led on and on by a overweight, out of form, former world player of the year. THIS IS MILAN, it’s not some shitty ass club and Fester needs to remember that he can still throw his weight around and discover some talent like he has done in the past. This is not impossible and if it means taking a chance on player X, than so be it, I would much rather support a team that is trying, than a team that remains complacent in their unsuccessful ways.

When you got so many ‘big names’ they are bound to be paid great wages, despite meagre successes on the actual playing field.
People should cut Galliani some slack, he doesn,t have the resources to pay every player top salaries and still buy out exhorbitant contracts from other clubs. I think their doing their best to balance things out. Getting rid of some more of the deadwood would be a goodthough.

gian, its all about the risk factor right?
anti-ronaldinho people will always bring out the risk factors, based more on subjective bias than objective facts and stats.
objective fact: ronaldinho, top quality player, well established, a couple of individual world and european player awards. world cup, league or 2, champions league. f’ing quality all round player. on the big stage for a long time since 2002. 20-25m euros.
adebayor: one good season, 23 goals, 9 against relegated teams, 6 against derby, 2 goals only in champions league, first being vs. milan at the san siro. just one good season. well known for missing good chances. only one good season. only one good season. only one good season. 40m euros. only one good season. seriously, 40m euros??
now you tell me where the bigger risk is…

I am interested to know if those wage numbers reflect the “official team”, that is, the team that is listed on the official website and programs… or does it include the primavera, players on loan, co-owned, etc.
Seeing those numbers makes me happy that we (Inter) have trimmed our roster waaaay down. The roster on the website looks bare now that we have removed some “dead wood” and there are still two people that haven’t been removed yet, at my last visit.
And if you want to get rid of Pirlo, I am sure that we can find a spot and some extra change for him to come back…:)

Shehan, i completely agree with you, couldnt said it any better. i have a good feeling that Dinho will stun next season. the guy is not normal at all, he literally is a magician, look at the way he dances with the ball and distribute those out-of-this-world passes. hopefully everything will be settled by next week and start with the squad on july 16.
our transfer season would be 100% perfect if we get Dinho & Eto’o (or Villa) but im only dreaming, and i can dream, cant i!
Berlu Jr. was saying he likes Villa, but we cant afford him. only if they could pump in another 30-40 million for Villa (or just take a loan) im sure they’ll get their money’s worth back. Dinho alone will bring way too much $$$ from jersey’s and season tickets and all Dinho followers will follow Milan, and lets not forget Milan does get a percentage from Dinho advertising. its a smart decision financially as well. ive always been against Adebayor but lately ive been on the fence because he’s our last option, but Shehan just convinced me to go back to my first opinion to be against it completely. his stats speak for itself, he only shined for one season and not that special and for 40 mil!!!
Sushan, Pirlo is what is called the invisible soldier. you dont see him much but he is everything in the midfield. look at our games when he was out, we suffered big time. he doesnt deserve the amount Kaka is being paid because thats way too much, but he does deserve a raise. Pirlo is indispensable, without him Milan wont be complete. one of the best in the world in his position, every team will like to have him.

sushan, Mr. Andrea Pirlo is THE MOST CONSISTENT PLAYER ON OUR TEAM. He sure got exhausted towards the end of the season, thus leading to his way subpar performances, which was admittedly extremely sad to watch (and I’m scared this is how the season will start since the poor man doesn’t really get much of a break with Euros and whatnot)…but he’s the freakin’ pendulum of our team and if a game goes well, it’s usually because of him.
I love Ricky, I really do, the fact that he’s spectacular goes without saying…but don’t go depreciating the awesomeness of our squad’s most important player.

Honestly, who the hell else could pull this off without even trying?: http://youtube.com/watch?v=ajkXybb8fuE
The man isn’t my favorite player in the world for nothing. Forza Andrea per sempre!

kaka rarely has a bad game. pirlo has had ten good games in the last two yrs. same is the case with seedorf(but he was excellent in the cl last year). its no rocket science as to why we are 5th in the table. we cant win without kaka and our other players grossly underperform in the league. And if somebody deserves a raise, its sandro nesta.

hana, we know you just like him only because of his hair :p just kidding, just kidding (= even non-milanista’s dream to have a player like Pirlo and a heart like Ringhio.
Sushan, its hard to give a player like Nesta a raise in his salary. he’s old (32) and injury prone. 4 million euro per year is pretty good for him, and like i said before most Milan players share the same wage, wont be fair to only give him a raise.

but he is a defender , so 30+ doesnt matter because paulo is playing well now so sandro at 32 is ok. what has pirlo done to get more salary than nesta??

sushan, i think uve confused some players.
i really cant say how pirlo is underrated, but you seriously have to watch a football game and just see how many touches he has.
if it is taking the pressure of his own defensive line by distributing a recovered ball away, or dragging midfielders towards him freeing space for seedorf or kaka’ to exploit, pirlo is perhaps the most inconspicuous midfielder in the world. i honestly didnt see his quality until three seasons ago, and i sometimes question my tactical awareness of the game as to how ive missed out on his qualities for some time before that.
gattuso said it best, i paraphrase, ‘when i see what andrea can do with the ball, sometimes i question myself as a footballer’.
pirlo is the most vital cog in our team. kaka’ injured, ok. seedorf injured, ok. ancelotti injured, ok. everybody else injured, ok. pirlo injured…
we are fucked.
proper fucked.

if Paolo didnt get a raise when he was a defender, and he actually got a cut-down this season to 1.5 million. defenders dont get that much.
i dont know which Milan are you watching but Pirlo has be vital for Milan. im sure his price tag right now would be around 30-50 million and there would be a bidding war for him. giving him a raise would issue a hands off warning and make him commit to Milan.

but do you know what money he is asking??he wants to be in the top bracket of players. For that you have to play like cristiano or kaka with incredible CONSISTENCY. It is not the matter of how important he is to milan , is he playing well enough to be paid like kaka/cr7??
Posted from

being important to Milan basically means he’s good for Milan = playing good for Milan.
Kaka gets paid 9 million per season, Pirlo 4 million. maybe give him 2 more million to make it 6 million.

fine 6 million is ok and sounds like a good deal.

now we call uncle fester and Pirlo’s agent and tell them we reached an agreement for them

I have two words for you Fetyani: Ha. Ha.
Honestly, that’s not the ONLY reason I like him…(Though seriously, don’t joke about Andrea’s hair. I’ve been developing a theory over this season that the less fluffy it is, the worse we play as a team. It’s that magical.)
Joking aside, I don’t know if you all have read this, but it’s from the blog “Run of Play”. The author has a really exquisite writing style, and his portrait of Andrea is a MUST READ for all football fans, Milanistas or not. Beautifully worded.

that was a good read, i agree with the part about Pirlo’s movement without the ball.
look at this clip, its pure beauty and genius by Kaka, Pirlo & Inzaghi. watch them off the ball how they all take the perfect position and with the ball they’re flawless.

plus Andrea gave me one of the best moments in my life so far. i got the chance to see his magic live. i literally cant explain the feeling. im the crazy guy yelling in the back lol

The whole issue with wages is Milan’s fault.. Rather than give the youngsters (who demand nothing wage-wise), a chance to play, they go for players like Emerson and Ronaldo who obviously demand a lot considering the clubs they’ve played for, which ends up not being worth it..
It’s the stupid transfer policy of buying old players.. Young players won’t demand much, unless it’s Adebayor (demands 120k a month to play like Henry.. seriously wow.. Henry’s had 7 amazing seasons with Arsenal, and you’ve had 1, and now you think you’re Henry.. get real!)
How much will Zambrotta cost us in wages? They’d be saving a lot if they opted for Maggio instead.. (that’s just one example)
So honestly, I don’t feel sorry for Milan’s money issues..
When you’re idiots in the transfer market, it back-fires on you..Posted from

Sushan, Pirlo is the engine that drives this team, and even when is “off his game” he still contributes in ways that are impossible to see and notice with his short passes and dictation of tempo. Your argument is purely reveresed with Kaka, being theone that dissapears, case in point, I watched Milan and Juve play to a draw where Kaka had possesion once or twice in the second half, with Pirlo touching the ball on almost very Milan possession. The man deserves what he asks for, plain and simple.

Fetyani, in response to Milan getting money back on Dinho adverstising, I would think that this wont happen like it does at Barca. Dinho is a Nike player and moving him to an Adidas team does not make a sponsor like Nike all that thrilled, because thier guy is nowing Adidas up top where everyone can see. Nike would love to have him at Inter, and even pay some of the fee, but Mourinho is way to rational for this kind of move. it will be interesting to see how this finally pans out, believe it or not one of the big issues keeping CRON at ManU is the Nike money, and the fact that Nike can help subsidize some of his contract and so on to keep him at ManU through his Nike deal.
Maybe Nike wants to offload Dinho though and this is the last staw!?

yah gianfrance, but nonetheless Milan will get a percentage from that. if he was an adidas player, it would just be more like have a clothing line for like Kaka and more ads with Milan. but they’ll still cash in. Pato is a nike player, Ronaldo helped Milan too when he first came, just his name coming was a big deal all around the world, because he is THE Ronaldo.
i think Dinho has 8-7 years left in his nike deal.

Keep in mind these guys have TONS of other marketability options. Kaka has billboards all over Milan for Dolce and Gabbana, Rolex (?) watches, adidas, etc. I don’t think brand name shoes factor that much. I.e, Beckham: adidas guy since day one but ManU never wore adidas (umbro and nike). But they still made a load of money by plastering Beck’s face everywhere. Really, I’m not sure this matters at all anyway. I mean, do we really want Ronaldinho’s face to be the face of Milan? The guy makes British dentistry look good.

What’s the problem with Pirlo? He needs adequate back-up to relieve him when he’s tired. Of all the starters we have, I think Pirlo is the only one who doesn’t have a capable back-up, and if Carletto thinks playing Emerson or Brocchi is a decent solution, well last season we saw how terrible we played with those guys in the line-up. That’s why I was actually disappointed Ancelotti didn’t give Gourcuff more chance to try to be vice-Pirlo.
IMO, other than replacing Dida, I say getting a Pirlo/Seedorf back-up is far more important than getting a Ronaldinho or another striker.
