Tactical Breakdown
By: Gianfranco | March 11th, 2009As I mentioned in my last post, I am currently taking a United States Soccer Association sponsored coaching class that will leave me with a National Coaching Certificate up to college. One of my assignments for the class is to provide a tactical and technical analysis of a starting eleven as an assistant coach would do for a head coach. Immediately I jumped at the chance to do it for the Rossoneri, and by the looks of it, the performances were not all that good. Remember though despite themselves they still managed to win 3-nil and that has to count for something. Here is my assignment, tell me what you think and remember that the form of the assignment is provided, and I have to follow:
Abbiati: excellent positioning and awareness; extremely slow to distribute the ball and when did he so quickly he was poor.
Bonera: few attacks his way in the first half; did little to incorporate himself in the match offensively; improved defensively as the game wore on.
Senderos: terrible positioning, terrible communication; horrific touch; clearances were akin to a youth player and rarely had the composure to play the ball from the back; weakest link in the Milan defense.
Maldini: long on the ball on a few occasions; miscommunication with Zambrotta and Jankulovski leaving space for Atalanta attackers; uncharacteristical mistakes on distributions.
Zambro: played more defensively with Jankulovski ahead of him; biting forward runs and passes when needed.
Flamini: tireless runner with little to no purpose for his running; poor on the tackle; very little influence on the match; made parallel runs which negates potential passes; was not decisive when first to the ball in the midfield.
Pirlo: forced to be first to the ball when Flamini was not able; won very few of the balls he made it to; provided calming presence to midfield; made himself available as a defensive outlet; forced his way into the attack when necessary but did so to late in the game to effect the match.
Janks: played well in a more offensive role; good flanking runs creating width; good crosses; did not recover as well as expected defensively.
Becks: tireless work rate; provided only offensive creativity early in the match; directly responsible for two of first three goals; joined in defense when needed but could have better shifted and moved with Pirlo into the attack; work rate tailed off excessively as the match wore on; no left footed in front of net; good tempo on counter.
Pato: good tempo and pace; shows inexperience in finishing; makes up for lack of finishing with pace; best player on the ball and most dangerous.
Pippo: three goals were only good plays; excellent sense for the net; consistently out of position and offside on quick counters; no attacking movement to create space for Pato; did little to relieve pressure from Pato; lost defenders effectively.

Chubby I too noticed the rabid eyes of Javier Mascherano, I have only see that glazed over look on two other people in the football world, Rino and Carlitos Tevez, and I have to say those looks have always spelled danger for the opposition.

gian, the fact is that arsenal did not score in open play against roma.
roma’s back-line was of diomoutene and jon arne riise… the last time diomoutene STARTED a game was for lecce… riise is a LB.
roma were suffering from injuries to most of their team. totti, vucinic, pizarro, tonetto, juan, those players were not even at 100% and they played 120 minutes. it was tonetto’s SECOND game ALL season. it was diamoutene’s european and starting DEBUT.
they showed the most heart out of all the italian teams. they were extremely unlucky to not get that penalty call from that bitch known as mejuto fucking gonzalez.
if my milan showed even a fraction of the heart showed by the romans yesterday, just a fraction, we would be on top of the world right now, without a doubt.
the romans can go out with their head held high. they were running on fumes and one leg, they were majestic. they were extremely unlucky, they deserved more. but they can keep their heads high. they ran against a superior physical opposition for 120 mins, they showed heart and passion, how football should be.

just read the headlines of the italian sports papers. they showed great heart and character. you cannot take that away from them.

And Arsenal doesn’t have injuries? There three best players are hurt in Adebayor, Cesc, and Rocisky. That is a lot to overcome. You can’t complain about bad or noncalls it happens to every team in every sport…it all evens out over time. I am sick of the arguments from fans crying over ref calls, its BS, it happens and great teams overcome them, its called Human Error. Roma isn’t the only team to get hurt by a refs call in the last two days.
Roma played well, better than Arsenal (arsenal was rubbish) so as an Arsenal fan I am not taking anything away from them, but you capitalize on chances and you will win the game. Roma had plenty of chances to score and then the ref would be an after thought. Arsenal missed a ton of chances but in the end the squeaked by.

theres a difference between players that are out injured, and players that are on the field playing at 50%. all of arsenal’s players on the field were at 100%. as i mentioned earlier, totti, vucinic, pizarro, tonetto, and juan only made the starting XI with fitness tests just before the game. and you can also argue that roma had no mexes, de rossi and perotta. roma has no depth, thats their weakness. but i would bet my house that roma’s strongest XI vs. arsenals strongest XI would result in a roman victory any day of the week.
and even the british commentators couldn’t believe how that foul was not given by the referee. arsenal got lucky, plain and simple.
roma held the flag high for italy, they were the only italian team to have won a game. they can go out with their heads held high.

Sam dj ,as i said milion times Flamini is nice guy good fighter but this league simply its not for him.In AC Milan he is total disaster.Simple as air.Maybe the most stupid transfer beside sheva of course.
Forza Nemanja Vidic rape those retards!Posted from

Shehan juve did a great job too i have to admit. They were better team in second game.Inter was funny

inter sucked. they really never did show that they were good enough to beat Manchester United.
Juve and Roma put up a fight. And they should be proud of that. Especially considering how their midfield were completely destroyed by injuries.

quite dissapointed with the italian clubs. the english made us look like clowns. i just hope milan learn that these players in our team arent good enough to win the CL next year.

Gian, any chance you could do these write ups regularly and send them so Carlo?? I dont think he has anyone doing this kinda thing for him at the moment!
Im with those guys who say that this is what happens when the beloved Rossonerri dont make it to the CL
I was behind Juve and woulda like to see them get further, screw the merda, its KARMA man, ask MAD!
LOL, after all the money Mourinho made them splash out and what difference has he made for them?? hahaha
Merda! Bring back Mancini! At least that way you can involve an Italian somewhere!!
The only problem with Roma not getting further and the way they went out was that it will add MORE to this sense of injustice you always hear the romans complaining about!

Shehan to some extent, I don’ think there are two more evenly matched teams in the World at the moment, in fact if Henry was still at Arsenal we would be talking almost mirror images of each other in terms of size, style, pace, tempo, and lack of experience. Yes Roma played with grit and heart, but in the end if you were to put two fully fit squads out there including Adebayor, Totti, Cesc, hell they can have Red Man, I mean DDR back, and you still get the same result in the end. Arsenal, like Roma, is a fickle, but on a GOOD day Arsenal will play you off the pitch, while Roma just wins…

I have to say I am so intrigued and impressed at everyones ability to dissect and really look at games outside of Milan, I love the discussion and the intelligence. Avia, i would love to send to Carletto, but I would get fired, I rate his boys a bit poorly!

Avia, I saw a comment yesterday on the Roma to the effect Roma needs to be in the CL becasue Fiorentina, Genoa, and Napoli lack the big names to compete and so on. Like it was a god given right, no offense but if anyone has a god given right it should be Milan, and yes we have not earned it, but when we get back there, I am confident to say we make it past this round, maybe not the next, but this one for sure and I can say Juve will do the same as Giovinco, Marchisio and the Chiellini will only improve and grow. Cheers to Roma for going down fighting, but in the end they are still small fish, and were fortunate not to run into the Bayern buzz saw, or the merciless ManU.

Gian, im hoping tactics are being concentrated on in these double training sessions that the squad are under going
My only worry with these “intensive” sessions is that the squad already looks tired and jaded hope it doesnt make them worse
Also, i’d rather see more emphasis ON CARLO and him making some changes too, not just a re-assertive attempt to make his F’ing xmas tree work!
Change your formation dumbass to make better use of what you have at your disposal!

Shehan- fair point, i misunderstood your point on the injured players, thanks for clearing up. I agree with that and I do think they outplayed Arsenal yesterday. They have nothing to be ashamed of.
As an Arsenal fan, Bendtner shouldn’t be on the pitch in a big game like that…simply he was embarrassing out there.

Hey – was at Milan Atalanta sunday – just back from the champs league hysterics last night. Was great for superpippo to get a hat-trick especially with such a bad team performance. Another absolute stinker from beckham I think the curva might have turned on him now too as they did on seedorf. jesus i think he had two successful passes, Pato had to call him out twice to pick up his player, then senderos had to do it and finally he was taken aside by ancelloti and dressed down on the line it was fuckin embarrassing. don’t know if you can see it on tv but he was supposed to be playing trequartista!?! seriously. so frustrating.
Abbiati was fantastic I have to say and probably deserved migliore but pippo gets it for the hat-trick. dont know why you’re critical of senderos that was by far his best game and he made up for quite a few errors by maldini (and I am no fan of senderos but was quite impressed sunday).
pirlo was again relying on his reputation not to be sent off for consistently late tackles, had a mare of a game too.Posted from

chad, i am so confused about what to think about bendtner.
just when you think he absolutely sucks as a player, he pulls some rabbit out of his ass to clinch him a place in the next game’s starting XI.
i will be rooting for arsenal and every other non-english team left.
fadayn, that is the advantage of being at the games!! you see so much more than whats caught on camera, i never would’ve thought beckham had a ‘terrible’ game! but i’ll take your word for it!

Shehan, I am with you on Bendtner, he has the tools, but he lacks polish. A bit like Gomez, can make magic, but doesn’t always do it. I will give Bendtner credit though as he finds seams and puts himself in good positions, he is still young so he may possibly grow into a solid striker. I will say he has the right cocky attitude, he just has to start living up to it a bit more.

Please don’t confuse TV vs Stadium. This was a bull comment about Becks, yes he wasn’t perfect, but to call it a stinker of Seedorf proportions??? Where were you sitting Fadayn? Not San Siro for sure.
I just hope the fate (or an invisible hand of Michel) will put all EPL sides together, like it happened in UEFA for Ukrainian teams.
Something like Chelsea vs ManU and Lpool vs Ars.

Shehan/GF i agree. I mean he is like Jekyle/Hyde at times, he shows flashes of brilliance then it’s like he has no idea how to play the game the next time he is out there. He consistently finds himself alone with the ball in front of net, and recently has just been shanking everything. At least for him he is only 21 and Wenger seems to really like him a lot. The kid Vela is only 20 but I like him better than Bendtner…he has a ton of talent and skill, just needs to keep taking advantage of his playing time when he gets it and learn consistency.
