Season Preview: Shot Stoppers and Shot Blockers
By: Gianfranco | August 23rd, 2008Your regularly scheduled Milan Legends post will not be seen today because, quite frankly we are to close to the season and we have some business to take care of. I am glad that everyone enjoyed the posts and if all goes well they will be back next summer, if we are lucky we will even get some non-Italians…
I want to take this opportunity to discuss the GK’s and defense situation and in a subsequent post we will discuss the rest of the squad. I have also learned that I will not be in my house in front of my computer for Milan’s opening match (GASP!!!) but I will leave you a post for everyone to do what is you guys do best. So now that we have discussed the week ahead, we can discuss the business at hand.
GOALKEEPERS
In the immortal, irrational, ridiculous words of Uncle Fester, “Milan has three world class goalkeepers.” Let us dissect this statement for a moment, world class means you have consistently performed at a level higher than most GK’s in the world. The only we have even close to that is Dida, and that was a long time ago, with Abbiati refusing call ups as a number three and Kalac being remembered for his International gaffs, I can not imagine a statement that is less false than that one.

The nice thing about our little summer GK competition is that Abbiati has shown all the tools necessary to grab hold of the starting job. He has shown confidence, desire, and an uncanny ability to get his hands on the ball and catch it. I am confident entering the season with Abbiati and he has proved on more than one occasion that he is a capable Serie A net minder with experience to back it, I am sure we will all be pleasantly surprised with his performance.
That leaves us with the fight for the back up spot which should go to Kalac. He earned at the end of last season stepping in for Dida and doing enough to keep Milan competitive and even making some great saves in the process. As for Dida he should be in the stands more than the bench, and without getting in to the fact that he is an embarrassment to the club and the game, the man has lost all credibility period. Really it is a shame, but that’s life, I wonder if his deal with Devil has finally run out…
DEFENDERS
I am going to paint a rather rosy picture of the defensive unit with the idea that Nesta and Maldini are healthy.
If this in fact the case, those two stalwarts can start at CB with Kaladze, Darmian, and even Ambro or Bonera rotating in as partners/backups. For example of Darmian/Maldini combo is good for both Paolo and the youngster because of the teaching ability as well as the speed that Darmian can bring the table. The youngster is very highly touted and is his chance to play this season should come in abundance, I just hope Carletto realizes this the same way we want to see it.
I am also OK with the possibility of Ambro slotting alongside Nesta. Ambro is a gamer and no one gives more on the pitch than he does. He has the build of a CB and his aerial skills will make him asset as well. His heavy play can be a liability, but you have to take the good with the bad here. Sub him in here and there, or give him a run in a lesser game and see what he can do, we may be surprised.
This does not mean that we shouldn’t add a CB, but if we do so it should be well thought out and calculated. Adding a 27+ CB may not be in the best interest of the club in a season without CL play, bring in a young gun and let him learn, take a chance, it can’t hurt.
As for the flanks, the addition of Zambro will prove very effective in providing versatility on the right and the left. Mix him in with Oddo and Janks and you have a fairly a solid trio to rotate in and out. Granted Oddo and Janks are both guilty of WTF moments, but these are players who are both proven on the international level and still have the ability to be serviceable for this season.
The dark horse for me is Antonini and where and when Carletto decides to use him.
Is he the Rossoneri LWB of the future, or is he going hide on the bench without the chance to prove his worth. There is also a possibility that he is used in a midfield role in front of Paolo to allow Paolo the ability to defend while still providing width in the attack.
The left side this upcoming season is full of question marks starting from back to front depending on which personnel Carletto chooses. We may see Paolo, Seedorf, Dinho; Janks, Antonini, Seedorf or Zambro, Ambro, Dinho. As you can see the possibility are endless and should be chosen wisely depending on the opposition and the need for the game at hand. Regardless the key here is versatility and need.

Kaladze might be inconsistent at times, but considering our current roster in defense, I don’t see him reduced to a sub yet.

Wow, with Sheva that makes 9 forwards on the Milan team. You could field almost a whole team just of strikers. Was that planned, do you think? or is Galliani trying to collect the whole set?

L’A.C.Milan comunica di aver raggiunto un accordo con l’FC Chelsea per il passaggio di Andriy Shevchenko in maglia rossonera. Il calciatore sarà domani a Milano per sottoporsi lunedì alle visite mediche.
I termini dell’accordo economico con l’FC Chelsea sono confidenziali.WHAT THE FUCKING SHIT.

Sheva now. all you need is a centre back - barring injuries this is looking like a bloody entertaining team again - hopefully Carlotti can get the best out of Dinho and Sheva (except when you’re playing Roma

i dont even want to think that Milan could have included Kaka in the deal. even if its only that if Kaka were to leave, Milan will sell him to chelsea and no one else.
but anyways, for now lets get Sendeross or Ivanovic or Kovac…

good to hear that from Pato, he said if Sheva wants his number back he’ll give it to him out of respect to the club.

Before I say what’s on my mind, I want to make it clear that I do indeed respect and admire Shevchenko for what he did with Milan and will always regard him as a great player (despite hardly playing at Chelsea, he actually had a pretty good goal-per-game ratio). That said……
I am sick to my stomach about this. I feel terrible for Pato and Borriello and Paloschi. Those three could have been our future strikers. Instead, a club that should be looking ahead and moving forward and is also in desperate need of a defender, has brough back a traitor who is now 3 years older and suffering from a supposed injury. And yes, Sheva is a traitor. Just because he constantly longed for Milan a week after arriving in soggy London doesn’t diminish that fact. He kissed Chelsea’s logo the day he first scored, and if things had gone 100% peachy for him I highly doubt he’d ever consider coming back to Milan (he was making a boat-load of cash after all).
I truly am sick about this. And if Pato truly will surrender his No. 7 that just makes it worse. Pato deserves to keep his number because he is our future. Why can’t Milan see this? Pato is our Messi, our Rooney, our CR7, our Dos Santos (I know that last bit is a stretch, but you’ll see my point). Those players were all given a chance by huge clubs at very young ages. And the delivered (Dos Santos…kind of). I don’t think anyone can say Pato failed Milan (his goals alone earned Milan 10 pts, w/o those points Milan would’ve been hardpressed to finish with a UEFA Cup spot).
Then there is Borriello, who I feel equally sorry for. Brought back to Milan after rising like a Phoenix from the ashes with Genoa, only to once again be hung out to dry by a club that is losing it’s mind. And then there’s Paloschi. Young, talented and desperate to prove himself with Milan. I ask you, are any of Pato, Paloschi and Borriello any LESS of a gamble than 33-yrs-old-and-injured-not-to-mention-crestfallen-Sheva?
Add to this the now completely useless transfer for Ronaldinho. I forced myself to come around to the idea of having an out of shape and possible has-been being Milan’s big signing. I got excited, I started tracking Dinho’s performances in training and at Beijing and I got even more excited. But now, I have an overwhelming feeling that he was a complete waste of money. We didn’t NEED him. We did need defenders, creative mids, and a truly dominant striker that would lead us to victory. We missed out on all those departments. And now, I can’t help but feel that the money that was spent on Dinho and Sheva could have gone to Ivanovic (or defender X) and Eto/Drogba/Adebayor/Berbatov/Rossi/et cetera.
These things are certain now:
1. Milan is insane. They should be building for the future, instead they are trying to re-create the past.
2. In their attempt to show how familial they are by brining back the prodigal son, Milan has actually given the cold shoulder to 3 players who should have been given their chance
3. I am not looking forward to seeing Sheva inevitably given priority over Pato, Marco B, Paloschi, and Viudez. But that is what will happen.
4. I am sick to my stomach.

JP, I could not have said it better, and I truly respect your every word.
Galliani’s words today:
‘I believe that Milan are the only club in the world to have three European players of the year in our squad.’Has been, Has been, and soon to be has been…TIME TO MOVE FORWARD, having a squad full of former euro ball winners doesnt win you anything but an age contest, is Rivaldo for sale? Maybe we can whoo Zidane to the San Siro? WTF!!!

What???? Fet,did you say Sheva for Milan?

JP, to further your post, Milan is content to play aging superstars (Maldini doesnt count in these thoughts, because he is above legend in the club)while letting youth rot on the bench. Barcelona has always been an intelligent club, and the fact that Milan could have gotten Eto instead of Dinho is a shear sign that this club has lost its way and left us in a position to fail yet again…
1997 Milan welcome back, Baresi retired in a year where Milan finished in tenth place with a team that had no standout strikers, and a over dependence on Dutch midfielders.
2008 Milan, Maldini will retire on Milan team with no standout strikers, and an over dependence on Brazilian attacking midfielders.

Now that you got Shevchencko for an “undisclosed amount” do any of you really think that Galliani is bringing in another player?

I saw Albertini in the curva at the Milan Derby when i was there last year - a legend in 2nd annello blu!
(by the way I thought we were pessimistic in the roma blog but you guys have signed 10 times as many players and sound more depressed!) think you could have signed Riise!

Is it possible that Galliani is experiencing signs of Dementia? How old is he again? I’m running out of reasons as to why he would send the club he so much loves and all of its achievements which he was part of, down the drain.

Gianfranco, you just destroyed Dida up there. I hope people read it and take it to heart. He’s done and has been for some time now.
