Season Preview: Mids and Attack
By: Gianfranco | August 25th, 2008Saying Milan has an embarrassment of talent in the midfield is a bit of overstatement. Sure when you look at the players you see Rino, Pirlo, Kaka, Seedorf, Flamini, Ambro and now Dinho you have to say wow. But when you really investigate a little further you tend to lose a little bit of that optimism.
MIDFIELDERS
Rino and Pirlo are the heart and soul of this team and midfield, but since 2006 have been suffering from a strange ailment that I can not even begin to describe. It is not laziness, and it is not even all that much a lack of form, the real only way I can described the way those guys are going is slow motion, it is almost like their reactions and movements are behind or not on par without everyone else. Whatever it is behind this strange ailment, be it fatigue, age, and just plain complacency, it needs to be shaken quickly to make this team strong again in the center of the pitch.
Ambro played extremely well last season and if he finds himself in the midfield or in the defense, he will play with the same passion and heart he has shown in the past few season. The nice thing is both Ambro and Rino will have a breather when Flamini is in the game. The former Arsenal man is a new addition who had a great season at the Emirates last season and is very capable of keeping up that skill and class. The Frenchman is nice mix of Rino’s toughness and real midfielders touch and will make a nice supporting addition alongside Pirlo to take pressure of the playmaker. There is one thing to be said about Flamini is that he is relatively new to the quality players season and he will need to continue to grow and get better at the San Siro to have real quality success.
Onto the attacking midfield front, and Clarence Seedorf, there is not much I can say about Seedorf other than the fact that he has been a loyal soldier to the cause and has shown that he can still play at the highest level when needed. He has gotten a bit finicky in his old age about playing time and location, but he will have to but that behind him in an effort to mesh with the Brazilian duo he shares his position on the pitch with.
Kaka and Dinho are both big question marks for Milan this season. I am not worried about Kaka’s form, but more about his knees. He will continue to get fouled this season and he will have to play with some grit and toughness to stay healthy and continue to lead this team in the attack. His Brazilian teammate is a bit of different story, his injury problems seem to be behind him but Ronaldinho needs to find the heart and desire to play football the way he once did. I can only hope Kaka’s calming persona can have a positive effect on Dinho regaining his ability and form.
Much like on defense, Carletto has a luxury of resting players and keeping players in top form in the midfield. Finding a comfort zone between two players out of the front three mids of Kaka, Dinho and Seedorf is an important task for Carletto, while he also strives to get Pirlo the support he needs on each side to do what he does best, create.
STRIKERS
We all know what happened yesterday, and the reaction has been all over the place. I have heard joy, anger, disappointment, and just plain don’t care from many of you both here as well as family in the boot. Sheva has not come off the best seasons of his career and his inclusion into this squad can not be a starting role from day one. This does however give Milan a bit of breathing room in the striker department that is a bit of a crapshoot given the personnel.
Pato proved his ability last year, but he also showed his inexperience time and time again. He did not work well alone up front, but in fact seemed to excel when paired with a partner. I am sure Carletto saw and understood this and would welcome the likes of Sheva and Borriello to play alongside Pato in circumstances were Milan need to score goals. As Pato progresses he can do so at a more reasonable pace, with much more reasonable expectations in this coming season.
Borriello had a phenomenal year at Genoa and scored some real quality goals from all areas of the attacking third. One has to believe that if his form is where it left off that he can only improve with a better supporting cast, but that is the same belief that was applied to Gilardino when he arrived. Borriello will have to do his best to not duplicate his predecessors failures, which is not that easy of a task considering that Gilardino’s failures seem to be as much his fault as they were Carletto’s.
That leaves us with Pippo and Pippo Jr., Paloschi. Pippo is what he is, and playing as a sub will be a good role for him as his career seems to be coming to a close. But his experience and knack for the net will welcomed this season, especially if he can find the groove he finished last season with. Paloschi on the other hand seems to be the odd man out and his age, and inexperience may warrant a loan now that the depth chart is a bit more crowded ahead of him. I am not saying that Paloschi would not play well and give 100% for the Rossoneri but his playing time may be few and far between and it may best he is sent on loan to play regularly and possibly return following a break out season like the one Borriello enjoyed last campaign. Paloschi, for me is the heir apparent, to Pippo and he will get his chance when Pippo hangs up the boots, but should play as much as he can until then.
Depending on Carletto’s formation be it the Xmas tree or two strikers, Milan for once in a very long time seems to have a wealth options and depth. But it is time for Carletto to be a coach and leader and make choices not by name and history, but on form and ability. Play the best eleven, in the best situation to give this team a chance to win time and time again. This may mean benching Sheva, Rino, or Dinho and if that in fact is his choice he needs to be confident in it, defend it, and hope that it works on the pitch. He no longer needs to shut down on D or play 4 holding mids with the lineup he has, and I hope he sees this potential the same way we do.

Oddo needs to stay, because honestly he and Zambro are better than Zambro and Janks, so it is important that we keep the best squad availabe. As for Paloschi it is disappointing but Borriello left and had a great season, and hopefully Paloschi can recreate that feat.
I just wish Brocchi had stayed and Emerson had left…

Ya, we need Oddo to stay. No way is Zambro gonna be fit all season and I would much rather have Oddo as right-back than Bonera. (I love Bonera – just as CB, not on the wings)
I would rather have Palo just loaned out, not this “co-ownership” deal… but as long as he gets playing time, that’s better for him. Though I am so going to miss his moments with Pippo!
I wonder how the San Siro faithful are going to react to Sheva…?

my personal opinion of senderos from the last two seasons is that he is shit. (confidence completely shattered) however, the arsenal stuff i am reading says he could be quite decent in serie a and that after the champions league semi run arsene seriously considered giving him the captain’s armband. i hope for his sake he gets back on track.

In the EPL he sucked but in the CL he did play well, but he needs to build confidence and form…which Carletto has neither the concept or ability to provide.

I am adamantly against the sale of Oddo, and the story looks like rubbish with a prospective loan deal being discussed, and the likelihood of a loan is crap.

i meant champions league final run for arse.. oops.
btw the espn fantasy game has oddo as one on their top 4 most expensive defenders (of which materazzi is # 1). whats bunch of chimps do they have working on that shit

lol@which Carletto has neither the concept or ability to provide.
Carletto has that look on his face that screams, “I could care less”, and he gets me worried before the match even starts! To make matters worse, he takes forever sometimes to make subs, and when he does, he takes out Seedorf and brings in Emerson or Brocchi for Rino! Hopefully this year with the new signings that won’t be the case. I wanna see him jumping up and down on the sidelines screaming at the guys, well maybe that is too much, but for God’s sake react.I miss Sacchi!Posted from

Evaldo Oddo is a WC and CL winning defender who on his best days was one of the best at what he did plain and simple. Last season was injury riddled and poor form laden, and whenever we watched he was just plain crap. That is not the typical Oddo, but only what we have gotten used to…

Oddo is going to be loaned to Bayern it seems…

Philippe Senderos has described his loan move from Arsenal to AC Milan as a ‘dream come true’.
The Switzerland international defender has put pen to paper on a season-long deal, ending a summer of speculation about his future.
He will join former Gunners team-mate Mathieu Flamini who moved to the San Siro earlier in the summer.
‘I am really happy to play in a team like Milan,’ Senderos told the club’s official website.
‘For me, this is a dream come true. Everything has happened really fast, in a week.
‘Everything here is incredible. The people are very easy going and they have made me feel like I’m at home.’
Senderos, 23, paid tribute to Arsenal, the club he joined as a teenager in 2003, but believes even better times could be ahead.
‘In the past I have achieved some success,’ he said. ‘To have become European Champion with the Under-17 national team and of course, at the age of 18 to have arrived to a big club as Arsenal.
‘In London I have learned a lot. It has been a life school and (manager Arsene) Wenger has helped me.
‘Today I can say I have reached a superior level by coming to this club. I want to give 100% and improve every day.
‘This team wants to return to the Champions League and I will do everything I can to help.’
Milan will play in the UEFA Cup this season having finished a disappointing fifth in Serie A last term.

I failed to notice before that Senderos is injured… I should have guessed that was the only way we were buying a young defender!
Ugh, I’m just bitter about Oddo being loaned out.Posted from

Relax guys, Senderos is brought in to be the 4th defender and nothing more. IMO he’s a slight improvement over Simic, who held the same role last season. Assuming Nesta stays healthy the whole season and Maldini stays relatively healthy to play here and there, Senderos wouldn’t even have too much playing time.
It’s a no-lose situation for Milan. Senderos at his best is a decent defender. If he’s inserted as the starting DC for 3-4 games, that’d be fine. Plus, consider the fact that he’ll be training with the best defenders in the world at Milanello. He’ll improve. If he does, I think we have the option to make the move permanent. Win-win situation.
Brocchi to Lazio? Eh … Doesn’t make that much difference.

Found a good response to a recent Channel 4 article:
“I like what Milan did this off season. Adding Flamini to Gattuso and Ambrosini will allow Ancelotti to keep his midfield fresh which was one of the problems in the home stretch in Serie A last year.
I think that the addition of Zambrotta was a good move. Yes, he is not youthful, but he has the experience and has played at the top levels. Although, the possible transfer of Oddo to Lyon is a curious move. Seems to me that depth is what the Rossoneri will need at the back given the injury troubles Nesta and Maldini have had recently. I also like the addition of Senderos. I understand the mistake prone issue, but what defender does not make mistakes every so often. There have been quite a few gaffes by the Milan defenders themselves.
Speaking of mistake prone, the Rossoneri needed to shore up their GK situation and they did not do so. That to me, is the biggest disappointment of the off season. It is clear that Milan lost faith in Dida and Kalac as a backup. I heard good things about Abbiati’s performance in the pre-season. Maybe Milan thinks he is the long term answer?
As for Sheva and Ronaldinho, Milan did not have a proven striker last season and relied upon Inzaghi and Pato (primarily). While I think Palsochi will be good in years to come, having two teenagers anchor the attack is a mistake. Both Sheva and Ronaldinho needed a change. For Sheva, maybe the return to Milan will mean a return to glory. The transfer to Milan will likely mean a reinvigoration for Ronaldinho. While neither of them are spring chickens, both saw limited playing time in the last couple of years. Hopefully, that translates less wear and tear on their bodies.
Also, it is important to have some flexibility up front. This will allow Ancelotti to rotate players to keep them fresh and in form without tiring them out or risking unnecessary injuries in an effort to hopefully win the Scudetto and UEFA Cup. Ronaldinho can also help Kaka who is having trouble recovering from his knee injury. Overall, I think that the flexibility given to Ancelotti will give him the chance to win both the Scudetto and UEFA Cup — barring a catastrophic run of injuries”

seems strange that for an italian side, galliani and berlu have showed so much more focus on attack and midfield over defense – we’ve got good (if slightly ageing) options in both but we still really need depth at the back and in the net…
anyway, 3 days to go…ready to start the next 9 months of sweating, drinking, pulling out hair, cursing baldie and ancelotti, threatening to take my support back to cricket, drinking and more drinking….WELCOME TO THE SEASON, HELL YEAH!Posted from

Too bad about Oddo, but he was very gracious about the whole deal, promising to come back a better player. The extra depth would have been nice, but I think it’ll be a good experience for him. Now him and Luca Toni can struggle through German together.
“I am temporarily leaving the club that I always dreamed of playing for since I was a child and the team that has given me the chance to win the most important trophies,” Oddo told Milan’s website.
“It was a difficult choice but I thought about it and there was total agreement between the club and myself and I want to thank the directors for that.
“I will go and tackle this new and fascinating challenge and hope to improve for it.
“I wish my teammates a million successes until I get back.
“I want to thank and salute all the fans who have been close to me and supported me in the difficult moments and to offer them an affectionate arrivederci.”
I’m personally excited as hell for the season to start…3 days…3 days.

I don’t know about this whole Oddo situation. I think we should have kept him. So our right backs are now Zambrotta, Favalli, possibly Bonera/Antonini? I don’t even understand why, of all players, it was Oddo who got loaned out. And why a loan anyway? He’s gonna be 33, it’s not like he has anything left to learn or adjust to! It just seems like a foolish, impulsive move (like 80% of our transfers have been).
P.S. I know my comments for the past week have been somewhat focused on the negatives. I think it was mainly caused by Sheva’s return and the fact that Milan have forsaken so much youth (Abate, Paloschi, De Gennaro, Darmian, etc) thus far. I really thought we were gonna move towards a new future, but it seems like we’re going two steps forward and one step back. That said, I am indeed very excited for the new season!!

It is sad to see Oddo leaving like that. Not a spring chicken, but Klinsi made a good move.
Oddo didn’t have a great season, but we should have kept him. On the other hand he was given an opportunity to play at the highest level in one of the best clubs in the world and be a starter, so no reason for him to be upset.
Its not like he was loaned to Brescia.Posted from
