He did well during Conf. Cup. Maybe Digao decided to become an agent, like Ronnie’s brother. LOL

Onyewu is kickass and played for Clemson which us where I live. This is great for him, although Id rather him be somewhere like everton where he can start and be with Howard (who is better than abbiati, maybe you should buy the American pair…)

I am with Chubby, the American market is far to swept up with everything other than football, in fact no one will no where Gooch signed, or care for that matter because unlike Becks, no one in this country knows who Gooch is!

He is a decent backup, but I would have preferred a younger player with more potential like Santacroce or Zapata. But then, these players would need continuous playing time.

Gian, you are forgetting that soccer is the number one sport for pre-teeners. They have to look up to someone and who better to look up to than the only American to play for one of the biggest clubs in the world.
This move can be a marketing genius if you ask me.

I meant this move is genius in marketing terms.

And they would cost a lot more.
I was totally surprised by this signing, who knew there were secret negotiations anymore? Everything seems to be a drawn out affair. Onyewu is a good center-back and give him credit for the play in the Belgian league, they came incredibly close to taking out Liverpool in the CL. I think he’ll see a decent amount of playing time. Hopefully this will expand some American soccer fans into Serie A, most tend to be MLS, EPL, and a few Liga fans.

Alessio everyone stateside loves ManU, I am ok with changing that up a bit!!

Stay optimistic on how our newest addition is going to perform this season.
But don’t get it twisted this signing was done to shut up the Ultras and fans who were getting EXTREMLY annoyed at the inactivity in the market.
Management knows it fans very well. Sorry to say many are suckers…that would accept a Big Mac & Sprite when they really desreve a Porterhouse stake with a fine red wine all because management says this is what they should like.

The guy played decent for the USA in the recent couple of games… he has good size for a defender…
If MILAN could mold him into a good defender, I will be happy. both for my club & my country!Posted from

I wouldn’t mind it, Gian, as long as they focus a bit on Serie A and eventually meet their true love, la Vecchia Signora!
Side note- We know the Onyeweu move is because he’s free, but probably more importantly he helps Milan market in America. They could make it a little more subtle by not having the American flag at the official site’s splash screen redirect to the ACMilanUSA store…rather than y’know, the club website.

I think you guys are getting a steal of a deal in Onyewu. He is a big physical presence in the box, good with his head on set plays and is a solid defender. If he has a downside, it’s his tendency to make panic clearances when he has the ball at his feet. I’m sure that Milan can cure him of that though.

everyone knows onyewu is a big gamble, but in the end it can be a stroke of genius. I dont like it as much as the next milanfan but I think we should give Gooch a chance. You never know we all might be running to orer Gooch jerseys come christmas. lol

I actually would have thought (and preferred) he would go to juventus over milan because he’s not 35 years old, and juventus tend to go for free agent defenders.

I can’t believe Milan signed Onyewu. My only consolation is that he arrived for free and may perhaps make U.S. “soccer” fans and broadcasters care more for A.C. Milan and Italian football.
But this is a mediocre player the club has signed. Supporters of Onyewu are mentioning how well he did at the Confederations Cup. Excuse me…WHAT?! Can someone explain why we should be impressed with a defense that conceded 10 goals in 5 games? The U.S. also allowed several goals off set pieces and, if anything, one would think defending set pieces would be Onyewu’s strong point.
No, the U.S. put eleven men behind the ball against Spain, got a clean sheet and everyone started singing the praises of their backline. But Onyewu was part of shambolic defense and he has no idea what he’s in store for in Italy. I’d rather have Senderos than this guy.

tru JP, the stats say it all…. but lets atleast see how he plays. Might be a gem that need unearthing. Look at Pique, he was a mediocre defender before he went Barca (still is now in my opnion) but he even I have to admit that he fits in well with Barca. Sometimes players need to play with the right combination of players to perform well.
DISCLAIMER….. This statement in no way means that I endorse Onyewu… lol. But u never know, he might be a great signing

Gooch may not be the second coming of Cannavaro, but don’t be so quick to write the guy off just because he is American.

lol, im with JP – well said mate!
After the kicking we gave Senderos, everyone here is singing the praises of the new guy?? wat gives???
maybe he can be senderos’ back up???

Ambro might not be the best mid in the world, but one thing is for sure, he’ll give his 100%, and for that i’m glad that he is our new capitano.forza ambro.

trinimilanfan pique is an absolutely class defender. having watched barca play a lot of games last season i can honestly say if he keeps getting better hes going to be one of the best in europe.
as for onyewu i think its a joke for a team like milan to sign a player of his calibre. same as senderos. i watched onyewu when he played for newcastle and he was awful, literally had no idea what was goin on. he has a few good games for the USA and suddenly hes amazing. im sorry but he really isnt

It doesnt matter whether Onyewu is rubbish or amazing. He came for free,so the move doesnt hurt us. We will sign a really good CB when Nesta retires.
Apparently,Inter too wanted Gooch.Posted from

Alex, you know the Newcastle defence is cursed, and that everyone who play there are rubbish. Look at Boumsong, terrible in Newcastle, exellent with Lyon, that Bramble guy doesn’t do too bad in Wigan either ey?

Everybody here is bashing the new guy and haven’t even given him a chance to prove himself…?
-
Facts are: The guy has good size, he played well against Spain & Brazil, he has nothing to do but get better while playing for MILAN…
-
And most importantly!!! WE GOT HIM FOR FREE!!!!!!!!
-
Could we have signed a better defender? yes… did we just add another body to the back line for FREE…
YES WE DID. All I know is that the guy played well for USA and has been playing well in Belgium.
so at least wait till the guy gets a shot to prove himself before bashing him.Posted from
