Milan – Bologna Preview, Easy Way Out…

By: Gianfranco | September 19th, 2009

So I have to go to Boston unexpectedly today which basically negates the time I had set aside to write this preview, so I need your help.

A few quick questions that I was planning on asking myself prior to writing this preview, instead you answer them:

1. Seedorf or Dinho against Bologna, why?
2. Would you be upset if Pippo and Seedorf were used exclusively in CL play while Dinho and KJH were used only in Serie A?
3. Should Abate get the start?
4. How long before we try Abate at RB?

I do want to add that with the dropped points at Livorno the next three home games are most certainly must wins. Is it early, of course it is, but with a three game home stretch against average competition nine points now will go a long way in making this season one above the Mason Dixon Line of Serie A Clubs.

Here is Calcio-Italia’s Preview…

Milan will be out to settle a score when they invite Bologna to San Siro this weekend. Cast your mind back to August 2008 and the corresponding Week 1 encounter last term. The Rossoblu caused a massive shock as they upstaged Ronaldinho’s Rossoneri debut. Marco Di Vaio and Francesco Valiani netted the goals to secure a surprise 2-1 victory.

Granted the Diavolo did earn a quantum of vengeance in January when they thumped Bologna 4-1 at the Dall’Ara. However, they were affronted on their home turf by the Bolognese outfit and need to avenge that slip-up.

In truth though Milan just need a win, regardless of scores they may want to settle. Since their opening day win at Siena they have suffered the indignity of a crushing by rivals Inter and an underwhelming draw against Livorno. If ever a confidence boosting League win was needed it is now.

With just two goals from their first three Serie A games there needs to be more clinical finishing, and when you have just brought in a highly-rated new striker you can feel justified in expecting him to deliver.

New boy Klaas-Jan Huntelaar needs to break his duck. With veteran attacker Pippo Inzaghi netting a brace midweek against Marseille, will he get a chance against the Rossoblu?

If the Milan tactician had any thoughts of turning his plans back to the aging Inzaghi he need only observe the visitor’s top target man – Di Vaio. After making his first start of the season in the loss to Chievo last week he will be eager to remind one of the big guns that he is still a threat.

And you would not bet against Bologna causing an upset. Not only did they win at San Siro last year but they also won the meeting before that in 2004-05. Consequently they are looking for a hat-trick of wins over Milan at the Scala del Calcio. However, they shouldn’t forget that back in 1990-91 the Rossoneri hammered them 6-0.

Milan’s injured list contains goalkeeper Christian Abbiati, midfielder Gennaro Gattuso and homegrown strikers Marco Borriello and Davide Di Gennaro. Bologna miss Greek defender Vangelis Moras for this fixture due to injury.

Keep an eye on: Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (Milan) – No debut heroics from Huntelaar, to match that of strike partner Pato. No second game goal either, or even third. If he fails to net against Bologna questions will start to be asked of the Rossoneri’s new Dutch bomber.

Last five in Serie A: Milan (- – W L D) Bologna (- – D D L)

Oh and one more thing, a little revenge never hurt anyone!

    1. Seedorf or Dinho against Bologna, why? Dorf, because Dino isi apparently sick with a fever.

    2. Would you be upset if Pippo and Seedorf were used exclusively in CL play while Dinho and KJH were used only in Serie A? If it is based on form/success, fine.

    3. Should Abate get the start? Yes.

    4. How long before we try Abate at RB? Right away…

id go with whoever plays best during training and is in-form, up to Leo. i just really hope we stay consistent with our game.

ps. Zambro, Oddo & Janku are done. yah they can give a few good games a season, but we need 40 games! not 3.5

Dinho, well its completely up to him now to either step up or be his own shadow forever. first cover yourself up properly so you dont get a cold.

1 – Seedorf. Word is that Rondaldinho is “sick”
2 – Yes, with the key factor being “exclusively”. A tendency toward that lineup if it works is ok, but no need to impose limitations.
3/4 – Yes, try him at RB this weekend but be prepared to make a change mid-game if need be.

And KJH needs playing time to find his fit and form with the team. Despite Pippo’s CL performance, give the start to KJH so he can accelerate the adjustment process. When we need goals from him later in the season, that should not be the time to adjust to Serie A.

    1. Dorf. He earned the spot, let’s give him a chance.

    2. Depends, if that system works then why not? I’m sure Dorf will get lots of playing time in Serie A considering Dinho’s inconsistent displays, while I want to see Huntelaar get pushed into the action a lot even if he doesn’t perform well at first – let’s not forget we’re looking for a long-term solution in him. Pippo will get more than enough space for his age, being the third striker. I doubt he has the physical stamina to play two games a week anymore so we should keep him safe and injury free.

    3. Yes, I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again – I want to see Abate/Pirlo/Flamini in our midfield, behind Dorf/Dinho and two strikers.

    4. We’ll just have to wait and see, I’m not sure how good he would be in that position…one way to find out though.

    Leo on fullbacks/Abate:

    ON THE FULL-BACKS
“I’m trying to have a sincere and direct rapport on what my ideas are on the
full-backs and also the full squad. We have spoken a lot on the argument of the
full-backs, we have tried to take Cissoko to improve the squad, but we are trying to
manage in the best possible way our reserouces. I think that the full-backs must
rotate exactly like we are doing with Oddo, Jankulovski and also Abate, who is
traiing and could be used as a full-back.”

and its all quoting ‘Sport’ newspaper. what is that?

Anyway back to football. Seedorf started teh first game or mabe 2 last year looking good as did gattuso but seedorf just plumetted after that into probably the worst player ever to don a milan jersey by the turn of the year. should we hold out any hope this season will be different?

meanwhile Beckham, milan’s big signing of 2010 has threatened again to sign for blackburn rovers not milan (while making it once again obvious he’s going to walk out on his contract with LA Galaxy for the third time). he hasnt been sanctioned yet for strangling Daniel Hernandez in his last match.

    1. Dorf gets a rest for his good game in CL.., Dinho starts to save any shot at staying on this team past January..
    2. I would say Pippo has to start only CL. Dorf can handle both.
    3. 100% Abate should get a start, let him show what hes got. he looks good each time ive seen him out for us.
    4. I right where he has been.

why isn’t silva starting? I wouldn’t worry though, Bologna isn’t exactly the most efficient team in the league, Nesta can handle DiVaio and Gooch should muscle whoever plays with him out of any opportunities, so as long as there are no blunders we should be fine in that area…
