Milan 4 – Lazio 1

By: Gianfranco | September 22nd, 2008

Usually I am not one to get all wound about a win, but when your team gets no points from two matches and you are playing an in form team in Lazio, you can’t help but smile at the quality of the win. No offense to Juventus, Inter, and Roma who beat mid to low table teams, but Lazio was a very formidable opponent who will be very capable of taking points from anyone and everyone in Serie A.

What won me over most about the win was the fact that players on the pitch were will and capable to show grit and determination. Rino was a beast and a very much his old self, Ambro was all over the place, Kaka on pace, Abbiatti making saves, and Janks remembered how to defend and attack in the same match. The bottom line is that the eleven players Carletto selected were all willing and able to make things happen and play at the intensity necessary to earn three points.

But with the great comes some bad, specifically Milan conceding on a counter attack off the corner. Seedorf, who after the goal struggled to find himself in the match, floated a poor corner that saw Ambro and Kaladze in the attacking zone and Zarate flying down the pitch for an excellent finish. If you are Carletto, and you know your team is a not as fleet in the foot as most, why not commit fewer players offensively on the corner and play a more control possession type corner? The world may never know.

MOTM for me was Borriello who did all the nitty gritty stuff that was needed on offense and was missing only a goal of his resume for an excellent match. His defensive play in the Milan box was better than some of our defenders and his ability to move on and off the ball really opened space for Seedorf, Kaka, and Pato. He needs to play game in and game out and I feel that the right partnership be it Sheva, Pato, or Pippo will make he even more valuable to the team. How ironic would it be if his good play keeps the likes of Sheva and Dinho on the bench?

OBSERVATIONS

-Anyone else think that FSC’s dynamic duo of Bretos and Sullivan are miserable. I can handle Sullivan but Bretos is a waste.

-Lazio looks like a very capable team and Zarate is a real player, but Di Sivestri and Foggia should be starters.

-Abbiatti looks to be on his game, his save late and on the offside ball were totally forgotten because of the score line.

-Lazio’s young Frenchman Menghi was referred to as the next Zidane. That means Benzema of Lyon, Menez of Roma, Gourcuff of Bordeaux/AC Milan, and Menghi of Lazio are all labeled this very inauspicious title. I have a funny feeling none of them will ever live up to the billing.

-The Rossoneri players were smiling, real ear to ear smiles!

-Here is an excellent video recap of the game

Now I have to admit I have an eye on the derby this weekend but we will talk more about it closer to the day. We can’t forget that there is a fixture midweek against Reggina and though I feel more comfortable going to Reggina, I hate the fact that they only have one point to show for three matches and will be poised to played well. Milan have always been susceptible to dropping points against clubs like Reggina as they showed last season against Atalanta, Parma, and Empoli. Carletto will have to use a lineup similar to what he did midweek against FC Zurich to assure proper rotation of players and strength of squad.

This is most important in defense specifically with the wingbacks who should be rested first and foremost. I would also expect Carletto to cycle the starting eleven as well so that the squad is still strong and capable of playing well in both at Reggina and in the Derby. Wednesday will be an interesting day to kick off a very exciting end of the week.

@ Moka – If that’s the line up I hope Kaka & Seedorf make early exits are they’ll be needed fresh and rested for derby day on Sunday.

Look for R80 & Sheva to come in early in the second half. We might even see Inzaghi, for Boriello.

Favalli starting, & Janks sitting isn’t a bad thing either.

Gattuso’s arm must have been killing him after the Lazio game…he has to sit 2 IMO.

I don’t want any excuses 4 the derby.

    Inzaghi is still injured.

Zambrotta should rest. Antonini should play RB!

And yea BigDawg, take off Kaka, Seedorf, Borriello, and give Dinho, Cardaccio, Sheva a run.

    Btw, I LOVE this depth!

Im with Big Dawg on “IMO for the derby game we should use the same line-up and formation as the Lazio game. Which means I’d be okay with slight changes in the line-up to save certain players for Sunday. Flamini for Gattuso, Sheva for Boriello, R80 for Seedorf or Kaka.”

and as Moka rightly touches on, isnt it great to seriously have genuine depth in squad??

No more Rino OFF Brocchi ON (YeeeeeeeeHaaaaaaaaaa!) :-)

    Heeeeeeeere’s Carlo!

    “ON THE FORMATION AGAINST REGGINA

“Abbiati for sure in goal; Zambrotta and Favalli on the wings with Bonera and Kaladze at the centre of the defence. Then there will be Flamini and Kaka.

    SHEVCHENKO
“His role is that of a moving attacking who has a great sense of goal, a first striker moves less than Sheva, who is still an attacker who can play with anyone.”

    RONALDINHO
“He is working and improving. His condition is still not the best, but little by little he will find it. I see him very serene and very calm.”

    GATTUSO
“He’s tired, but only because he worked a lot during the game and it was quite a bit that he last played. His hand is not a problem.”

    BORRIELLO
“During the game against Lazio he proved his commitment, his will and sacrifice which are the sign of what the public expects from the players.”

    NESTA, INZAGHI AND SENDEROS
“Nesta is recovering. He cured himself from the back problem, but he must still do the entire preparation because he is very behind and he will need time. Inzaghi and Senderos will be available next week.”

Bit unhappy to see Favallis name, Janks injured already??

A, going back to your comments on the last post, EXACTLY what i said immediately after the game…our defense still needs a lot of work – against inter, that is absolutely critical – we should play a more defensively oriented squad – i dont think we should think about taking the game to inter – they have a lot of pace and great strikers (kills me to compliment ibra but he is on fire this season) and will kill us on the counter…
i know i will get lynched but i think we should go back to xmas tree for inter and 2 strikers for reggina…
    for inter
    abbiati
    zambro maldini bonera/darmian antonini/janku
(dont want kaladze to play at all)
    gattuso flamini ambro
    seedorf/dinhio kaka
    boriello/pato

    for reggina
    abbiati
    zambro kaladze bonera/darmian janku/antonini
    flamini rino/ambro
    kaka/viudez cardaccio/dinhio
    pato sheva

we need to start airing out viudez, cardaccio, antonini and darmian – no more keeping people on the bench and then having them explode when we sell/loan them out a la gourcuff and gila…

    Please – No Christmas Tree.

Our strength is in our attack…I’m confident that we can put 2 or 3 past Inter if we play with 2 strikers.

If we play Christmas we’re not quick enough (IMO) to counter attack effectively against Inter, and can’t see us scoring with one striker. We’ll go down a a goal late in the first half and then have to put on another striker & find two goals to win the game.

(IMO) We have play to our strengths, this means playing two strikers and looking to score. I don’t want to go in this game not wanting to conceed.(that’s gonna happen no matter the formation) Attack Attack Attack should be our aim.

I don’t see us winning 1-0. I do see us winning 3-2 or 4-2 and we won’t score 4 with the x-mas tree formation.

i think we have to play to our strengths as well as our opponents’ – against big teams trying to attack attack attack will leave us completely open in the back, we have already seen that we are unable to keep a clean sheet – i would rather take 3 points in a 1-0 win or 1 point in a draw against inter than lose all 3 points.
we should play 2 strikers against the smaller teams and make sure we take all points there unlike last season where we persisted in playing a defensive formation in those games as well..

can anyone explain this sentence from goal.com aka bs.com

“Christian Abbiati has not been entirely convincing in goal for the Rossoneri, and another goalkeeping mistake will probably see Zeljko Kalac work his way back between the sticks.”

am i missing something here or what!

delighted to see milan going with the 2 up front that worked so well before rather than 1 slow guy like sheva upfront. great to see kaka back amongst the goals with that screamer too, just hope he stays fit and carletto doesnt start playing ronnie or sheva ahead of pato or borriello

    2+2+1+1 = 6 goals conceded, so that’s why they’re saying Abbiati hasn’t been convincing.

But it’s BS, b/c Abbiati has been GREAT and those 6 goals are defensive errors.

I agree with the hatred of the X-Mas tree formation, but we seriously don’t have the strikers to constantly support a two-striker system right now.

dont be surprised if carlo does bust out the christmas tree tomorrow and vs. inter.

abbiati made a massive mistake vs. lazio on the goal. rule #1 of goalkeeping is to guard your near post. thats why everybody got on dida’s back after our 2-2 draw vs. bayern 2 years ago, both goals he conceded were at the near post.

abbiati can play better than that…

It is good to concentrate on the defense, but if we play defensively against a team like inter, we will be punished for it. I think we should try to find a balance between defense and offense and have the dm help out the defense, or try to sort of create a vacuum in the middle so that the defense doesn’t suffer as much to begin with. I was amazed by the fact that Borriello was defending against Lazio and I’m not suggesting that we overburden our forwards or FM with defensive duties, but it sure helps when everyone is helping defensively, or offensively depending on how the game is going.

Well I was at the match on sunday – very exciting.

Seedorf is like a new man. Gattuso and Ambrosini were absolutely dominant in midfield. Boriello covered every blade of grass. He was out on his feet at the end, in fact when Gattuso was being subbed for (emerson?) ambrosini stopped the substitution to check that boriello could keep going. Kaka’s goal…well its magical. I have a vid clip from the curva sud and it looks fake the way the ball seems to drift in.

Abbiatti has been beaten on his near post two or three times already, with the goal against Lazio absolutely his to make the save. That one was a clear blunder.

As to the others, he’s Abbiatti and not Buffon or Casillas.

lets not get carried away. It was a good win, a much better effort, but there were some spectacular goals which we wont always score and we need to prove we can grind it out over the corse of the season, otherwise we’ll end up struggling for fourth spot like the last two seasons.

I’ll be interested to see the formation when Pirlo returns.

I thought Ambrosini was horrible, he needs a rest on the bench.

I’d also like to see Ronnie play a similar role to the one seedorf played, I think he’d be great their, although he probably wont want to play so deep.

    patcook,

like you say, I don’t see Ronaldinho being able to play that deep or cover defensively for that position and that’s why Ancelloti has Seedorf in the line-up when he plays two strikers plus Kaka.

Nina – spot on, we cant go and be too defensive against Inter as thats just asking our weak backline to absorb pressure it can ill afford to cope with.

The best way to alleviate this is make sure we get enough attacks in, i can still remember the last derby, we played out of our skin, more of the same please!
