Milan 4 Cagliari 3

By: Gianfranco | November 23rd, 2009

The attack truly deserves praise today, and that includes Pato, Seedorf, Dinho, and MOTM of Marco Borriello. It was just a few days ago that I read comments about Borriello’s value to the team, and if you were not convinced today then you may be a lost cause. Ronaldinho was stellar and Pato showed amazing flashes, but it was Marco who was the glue to make it work, and his lateral movement and danger in the 6 yd box was top class. I just hope Leo was taking him off to rest him before Marseille on Wednesday, and not drop him in favor of a slower than normal Pippo and inept KJH.

So enough about Marco; for all the value and delivery provided by the offense, the defense was abysmal. Kaladze was terrible, but considering that he was the only true CB option off the bench with Onyewu and Bonera shelved with injuries, there is not much else Leo could have done. It has to be said that if Leo started a youngster like Darmian or moved Zambro central and played Antonini on the flank we could at least blame the poor performance on growing pains or playing out of position, with Kaladze we could do neither. Zambrotta also deserves some blame, he lost the ball high on the pitch and put pressure on the defense by not getting back with pace, he has not looked comfortable at the LB spot all season, and I no longer believe he is a first team option. Dida was not as much to blame on the goals, but he did make things interesting on a few bobbled balls. He is superb going to his left, in fact I can even say impressive, but to his right he is a accident waiting to happen.

From a midfield standpoint Ambro and Seedorf did well, but Pirlo continues to be unimpressive. I no longer blame Pirlo though because he looks completely lost in the 4-3-3, and his slow run with Ronaldinho and his muffed fast break with Ambro exposed Pirlo’s age yet again. I don’t by any means blame Leo, and not even Pirlo, but in the end both these guys are intelligent enough to adapt and make the system work for both of them, which has not happened yet to this point. Simply redefining roles may help, but Pirlo will struggle royally without a change.

Speaking of Leo I can be critical with him on a few things today, which after five straight wins has been hard to do! His subs were puzzling and late. Pippo for Borriello was an unnecessary sub at that stage of the game, instead a defensive presence should have came immediately. His later Pato for Stasser move was even worse, for all the grief Carletto got for not “bleeding” youngsters, he put them in positions to succeed, not to be thrown to the wolves, and Strasser was close to being the goat today with an early mistake. That will not help or instill confidence for anyone. In the end instead of resting his three horses of the day: Seedorf, Bori, and Dinho. He pulled Pato who could have used the rest of the game to work out some possession issues, left Dinho who had to work very hard late and may affect him on Wednesday. Not good on his part.

It was a great win against a stout opponent in Cagliari, the goal outburst was very nice and the team continues to grow. In the end it will be interesting to see how this team stands up on the way to the holiday break and how long their stay near the top of the table will last.

Now they’re saying he got injured in training today and not in the game yesterday -_-

So I don’t know what to think…let’s just hope for the best.

I think its a load of bullshit. There is an post match interview with borriello and there is no mention of this either. Its all based on that moment that he had tape tied around his knee during the game on Sunday.

Ok the guy played a great game yesterday, however he is still found wanting against non italian teams, I personally would rather go with Pippo against the french… he caused havoc when he was at the valdrome…

Well milan news is also reporting issues with Borriello’s knee.

    http://www.milannews.it/?action=read&idnotizia=14152

TBH, this is one of the only point that I have to side with his critics for. He is very prone to injury. He can barely string together a few games before having injury issues.

k, what I find even more ironic is in his year with Genoa I don’t believe he missed a match due to injury…which makes me wonder what on Earth the folks at Milan lab are doing or what Leo is running in training…frustrating is really the only word that comes to mind…

http://www.goal.com/en/news/10/italy/2009/11/23/1642626/milan-vice-president-adriano-galliani-calls-police-after Is it me or is Galliani really getting shafted by the fun, including some of us here, yes he made some mistakes in the transfer market, but let us not forget that the final decision really lies with Berlu. I think uncle Fester should catch a break, and to threaten the man over the sale of Kaka’? really? its a sport, I personally might have called for the sale of the club to someone who gave a shit, but I always maintained that Fester has to stay, the passion this guy has for Milan, i mean im surprised he has not had a heart attack yet..

I don’t know, Gian. This is also the place that kept our captain running regularly and being match fit at 40. Costacurta at 41. Favalli at 37. Cafu at 37. We have just as many miracles as we do disasters.

I find it wierd that something as scientific as Milan Lab can be so bi-polar.

Back from Mexico, missed it live, saw it this morning.

    1. Boy I’m glad for Milan and Ronaldinho. Dinho is coming back. He is running harder, being less of a baby, and showing the world his incomparable in the match ball skills. He has been very good in the past 4-5 games. My 2 criticisms as a Ronnie fan are: I think he can still lose a few pounds and get faster (maybe he has too much muscle) and shoot more buddy. That play cutting right through the defender’s legs, bury that. Being picky.

    2. Our defense: God is Thiago Silva unreal. Played for2 today, covering for that disaster. Why the fuck this team did not pay some $$$ to get help out on the wings and some backup central defenders is beyond me. Kaladze SUCKS! You score 4 goals, you have no business coming close to a tie or losing. Thiago and Nesta are unreal. The others are avg or utter disasters.

    3. Midfield: Love Ambro. Had a great game. Deserved captain, plays with heart and runs his ass off. Seedorf, I’m really not a fan yet he’s composed, works his tail off…just wish he would pass faster up to the forwards! Pirlo, I don’t know what to say. Classy, great at FK’s but fuck dude they are counting on this guy too much to run and help the D out. In 4-3-3 he’s not very good in that mid-3. I wish they would have a kid that ran like the wind in that midfield, helped the D and got the ball up to Pato and Ronnie fast.

    4. Leonardo: From almost losing his job to a good showing, with a team everyone here including me picked to do relatively poorly. Still making some mistakes, not sure why Dinho stayed on after overcoming a fever, with a CL game in days???

    5. Forwards: Already spoke on R80. Pato, fuck the guy works hard and a spectacular finish. Has to learn to pass more, not try to deke everyone. Has wheels to burn. Marco did the grunt work upfront and had a great game. Working well with Pato and ROnnie. Boy I like what I see!

    6. GK: Well, well. From the dead Dida is at times standing on his head. Fantastic play from this guy, even though I think at times he’s looking at some Italian ass during play. Some of his fuck ups are remarkable. ANyway, he’s played very well but Abbiati is still our guy.

Get some defensive players and this team could go far. If you said that at the outset, after that PreSeason you would have been hung…but look at them now. 4-3-3 works well with most of these players, but not some.

LASTLY, what a great fucking pass by Silva to Ronnie that sparked that 2nd half run…too bad it wasn’t finished. That is what I’d like to see more of, pass the ball up fast and hard…don’t give the other team time to track back…otherwise MIlan’s midfield work too hard during games. Not a good omen for Ambro, Dorf and Pirlo.

    Later.

I get that, Avia. But it makes the case for Borriello that much wierder. He was completely injury free at Genoa, but cant string together 4 games without having an issue at Milan. Is it Milan? Is it a co-incidence? Is it Borriello? Who knows, but something obviously is going wrong and needs to be fixed.

What I am saying is that Milan Lab actually treats each person differently depending on their physiology, conditions and genetics. That’s why players like Maldini were able to continue. They had specialized training regimes to help them train, remain injury free and keep a level of fitness that is expected of them.

With the idea of having specialized programs catered to individual needs, the proposition of Milan Lab does wonders for one person and is a complete disaster for another, should theoretically not fit.

Another case was Kaka. I have no clue as to what the fuck was going on with him and Milan Lab. But he went to Brazil and was back on the field in 2 weeks. Something was obviously missing.

Borrielo got injured during training. Why is that the fault of Milan Lab? What they gonna do about it? Invent a invisible shield to protect his knees? Rediculous discussion. Milan Lab is still one of the best around and I’m not employed by them nor am I a relative to anybody working there. You get one injury and there can be several methods to treat that injury. In regards to Kaka, yes it took a while but perhaps the treatment that Milan Lab planned was better in the long run. Instead he went to Brazil and got himself fixed in two weeks. By what means? I don’t even want to know. (Slight reference to rumors of Ronaldo and his blood doping methods). I’d rather have serious medics treat players of my team, whereas I don’t claim there approach is always right. They are human and make mistakes as well. It is not their fault that players twist their whatevers during training or get hacked during matches.

Pirlo is not suited to Leo’s system. Playing one defensive midfielder (ambro) and one offensive midfielder (Seedorf), to balance out the midfield what is needed is a player who is both offensive and defensive and Pirlo is not this player.
