Milan 2 – Lecce 0
By: Gianfranco | April 6th, 2009I want start right off the bat and say that today’s Dinho is what we paid for, today’s Dinho is what I expected, and today’s Dinho is what needs to continue if he wants to remain at San Siro. His cheeky passes found the target, his runs had venom, and his shots were all dangerous. Now a pessimist could say things like well Lecce was exhausted when Dinho came in and his pace was tough, or one could say Lecce is a poor team and Dinho exploited it. But I am happy with his performance and hope it continues for the good of the squad. However, there is a glaring point here that needs to be addressed, Dinho’s game picked up exponentially when Kaka left the pitch. The goals came late, but with Kaka on the pitch both players were a bit confused, but when Kaka went off Dinho seemed to be reborn with pace and more importantly comfort. Can they play together? It is looking more and more like not so much.
Back to Lecce for a moment, they came in and followed the minnow at San Siro blueprint. Pack the box, play the counter, and hope for the best. What they got was a hard fought first half, but as they game wore on and Carletto kept throwing offensive darts, it was only a matter of time before the levy broke and Milan broke through. Part of me felt a bit bad when Benussi and Konan were having at it, but there was the first hand emotion of a relegation battle and Lecce seemed to be stuck in rut right now that will be very hard to get out of.

Congrats today to Senderos who after coming on for Maldini, quite plainly did not suck! His header off Dinho’s head was pivotal, but more importantly he handled his defensive duties and assured Milan a chance to earn the point. Even more important though was the continued growth and success of Flamini who quite possibly improved tenfold in five games. Bossed the back for Pirlo, got into the attack, and ran to all the right places. With 8 games left, one has to wonder If he can continue his meteoric run of play. Pato also continues to step up his game, and his pace is quite possibly becoming the most dangerous in the world. Just stop and consider for a moment another player that can accelerate the way he does after the first cut? His delivery in the box can use work, but as he matures this will surely improve.

As we watch Pato continue to grow, it is hard not to feel we have seen the peak of Ricky Kaka. Yes his fitness is low, but this season has seen the once world’s best struggled to find space, pace, and the back of the net. To further Sam’s comment from the match post, have we seen the last of Kaka, is he biding his time until he can leave for Real Madrid? It is tough tell, but in match where Dinho looked game, it was frustrating to see Kaka seem so out of touch. Surely this will make a dynamic storyline come the end of the season, and all we say now is speculation, but it is hard not to read all the grumblings and see the player on the pitch in a bit of a funk. It is hard not to compare him a bit to the last Milan golden ball winner Shevchenko. Sheva has also struggled to find form this season, but one thing he has not done is complain. He has taken every setback in stride, and even today he kissed the badge, admirable is the only word that comes to mind. As he cut in and placed a perfect pass to Pippo, I can’t help to think what would have been had he never left, had he played more this season, or had he just scored earlier in the season? Hopefully Sheva can talk to Kaka and in the same time earn some more playing time and find the back of the net yet again.

i’m no soccer analyst but it seems to me that the two teams have rather different offensive styles and types of personnel. milan doesn’t have guys like xavi and iniesta that set up other players with their incredible runs and passes. with apologies to kaka and pato, milan doesn’t have anyone that draws defenders (and opens up space for others) like messi. the slower pace of milan’s play doesn’t seem to go along with what eto’o is all about. plugging him into milan’s existing style does not guarantee good chemistry.

Can anyone confirm the validity of all these Kaka articles? There’s at least two a day about him now. I was beginning to believe his interest in Madrid, but now with the EPL comments, I kind of think it’s all rubish. Anyone else?

yeah gian, i forgot to explain my DDR and gerrard comparison earlier.
i meant it in the sense of a box-to-box midfielder with great technical ability. de rossi, while appropriately compared [by you] to essien, toure and senna, is so much better with the ball at his feet. he is a defensive midfielder with one of the best techniques in the game. i could go on about him forever, but we’re getting miles off tangent so ill drop it. but he would be an impossible but fantastic acquisition.
and while watching gerrard today, i probably overestimated him after his recent form. he was shit today. God i hate liverfuckingscumwankerpool.

i didn’t see the barca game, but the CL team that most (surprised and) impressed me in the past week was porto. talk about speed and ability up front…

i think i really like this shehan character.
with respect to the gerrard comment, in all fairness, he was playing pretty high up behind torres today rather than deeper in the midfield pocket where he tends to have more space to maneouvre up the field and is much more effective when seeing the play unfold in front of him (rather than playing back to goal). he really seemed to be getting stifled in the tight spaces that were left for him and doesnt quite have the foot skill to maneouvre out of those tighter parameters with the opposing defence / dm’s closing space on him. i think he’s still one of the best complete mids around but unfortunately he plays for the scum of the scum.

Gerrard is so annoying. He plays in one mode: shoot. That’s all he does. So annoying.

Yeah,Gerrard is annoying at times. He is arrogant. Anyways, its bye bye to Pool. I am really happy Bayern are going out. Germany now wont be able to move above Italy in the coefficient rankings.Thank you Barca.

fellas you got it wrong on Gerrard, essien made him his bitch plain and simple, shadow 100%, and with all due respect to DDR, and I really mean it, performances from him like essien today will finally earn a world class title that his fans covet for him…

Lol @ Gian, Essien was certainly great today but i think Chelsea got lucky.. the scouses were off to a great start & really should’ve put the game away while they were playing well but couldnt so they payed the price.. and in a time where people only talk about a C.Ronaldo or an Ibrahimovic, that Messi kid just had no Mercy for Bayern today. he completely outclassed them. he must have one hand on the Golden Ball & P.O.Y awards now, hey maybe next year Zlatan!..lmao haha.

Lamagica, dude (or whatever) I understand your love to DDR but IMO (mark it) he is miles behind Essien and Gerrard. Essien won today, but I won’t take it from Benitez, and Gerrard to come and beat some shit out of Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. They are more then able. It didn’t work today, it might not work next Tuesday, but you can expect 100% from this guy, while De Rossi is a cat in a sack. One day he is G-d, another – sh-t. I don’t know how many Chelsea games did you see, but Essien is a dream come true for ANY coach – head and shoulders above DDR.
Gian, I dunno what criteria you use for tackling expertise, but I still painfully remember Gerrard running after our fastest dude Serginho in unforgettable Istanbul fiasco, and tackling a shit out of him, time and time again. And Sergio was a sub.
As for Eto’t in red and black, I am not all that convinced that our setup would have supported him as much as Barca’s. To match Barcelona effectiveness Carlo should move Pirlo into Xavi’s free role, while keeping Rino (something he already did in Pirlo’s absence) in holding role, thus moving creative force forward and unsettling defenses with clever passing much closer to the goal + adding some long distance treat from time to time.
But this setup is unproductive when Kaka is playing. Guy is not Messi, and while he is good at his own right he needs a free space or be in motion to show his best, unlike Messi or Romario, who have (had) an unbelievable first step (plus technique).
What I am digging at, is that we need a normal holding mid, like Essien, Gerrard or even DDR, for then we won’t need to have two players doing the job of one, thus fielding another creative player instead of lumberjack (no insult intended). I would have preferred if Flamini was able to answer to another nick, other then Flattuso – Flerrard or Flasien.Posted from

Chubby, in all fairness, you got no excuses to offer for Gerrard. He was just plain shite and you are only as good as your last game.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=05G1IAxEe50 – nice little clip of Brazil playing in Haiti couple of years ago.
Messi is game-in game-out the best player in the world the last year, I don’t know who you think is talking about Cronaldo or Ibra because I don’t know any commentator that doesn’t believe him to be the best.

A – sooo you would drop gerrard for the next game if you were benitez?
(in fairness I hate gerrard and his diving, fouling cheating ways and i think benitez is hilarious with his zonal marking at corners, man hasn’t a clue)

Fadayn, I never claimed that Liverpool have anyone better to replace him with.
But seriously, I just don’t like tall claims like:
“but I won’t take it from Benitez, and Gerrard to come and beat some shit out of Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. They are more then able. It didn’t work today, it might not work next Tuesday, but you can expect 100% from this guy”
when you have just been handed a football lesson and your ‘best player in the world’ turned out a dud, and in the same breath talk down about player’s of other teams, even if that other team happens to be Lamagica’s.

i know, but some people don’t even watch football – to see gerrard called a holding midfielder almost beggars belief. he is a forward who was too stupid to understand or admit he was a forward until this year. now he finally realises that there is more to life than 442, (its taken a long time to explain it to the monobrow), and obviously words like trequartista are going to be lost on him. but to see him called a holding midfielder?? in that case pirlo is a goalie

No reports on the Carletto issue yet, but I am keeping my eye out on all the media outlets, Channel 4 is running it as well, but I am not sure how reliable they are either…like a step above Goal.com…

Gerrard filled all possible spots, and while now he is employed as box to box, with Alonso and Leiva covering for him, he used to play alongside the same Alonso in 2005.
As for my remark about Liverpool beating CFC at SB, well, they did record few splendid results this year, and if anything RM, MU and CFC trashings should keep you salivating for the next Tuesday, because it should be a game to watch. If Benitez decides to pursue this Cup also.
If you want to judge a player by his most recent game, then Kaka, Seedorf and half of the Milan squad should be relegated to the bench, with only Pato, Pippo and Flamini left on the field. Its like adjudging Bayern season by yesterday’s result.Posted from
