Milan 1 Reggina 1
By: Gianfranco | February 9th, 2009It is recaps’ following games like Saturday’s that I struggle the most with. Maybe I overanalyze, maybe I just struggle to make sense of the performance, whatever it is it leaves me with a blank stare for more than just a few minutes following the match.

First things first, I want to give all the credit in the world to Reggina and their defensive organization and tactical execution. Defensively, no team has been able to come to San Siro and cause that much frustration and really close down the center of the box as much as they did. They came in defensive minded, and proved to be extremely difficult to beat in the back. They also read the AC Milan scouting report, which has seemingly been distributed to every bottom table club in the Serie A, and that is that Milan are extremely vulnerable on the counter attack. Reggina sat back and with one quick strike but Milan on their heels and left the Rossoneri chasing the match. This Reggina is in a relegation dog fight, and if they are able to consistently perform with that type of tactical organization than I have a funny feeling they won’t be going back to Serie B this season. Yes they were chippy, but any fan of Serie A knows that any team on any day will take what is given to them, and this was the case here.
A good performance from their opponents does not let a team fighting for first place off the hook. It is hard to find fault in any individual performances even, because no one was all that bad, but in the same sense no one was really all that good. This was a vintage performance of last season’s model, never quite able to find the accelerator when they need to, and never quite able to get that final finish when it matters most, figures that Carletto seemed to do everything right for once, while the players seemed to get it all wrong.
Many of you may defend Dinho here, and I more than happy to hear your case, but before you let the comments fly ask yourself a simple question, “At any point during Saturday’s match could you honestly say that Dinho made anyone on the pitch better?” Go ahead, think it through, and then when you hear a resounding a no in your head, you can continue. Yes he had moments of greatness, quick feet, snap shots, and good passes, but every time he had the ball the team lost a bit of fluidity that was the cornerstone of this revival. To borrow a cliché, it just looked like the guy was playing to the beat of a different drum, and that doesn’t work. If you have the opportunity, and the wherewithal to but yourself through another viewing of the match, it shouldn’t take long to notice that Kaka and Pato very rarely had interchanging play on the left side of the pitch, making Reggina’s job all that much easier. Was Dinho bad? Not that bad, especially if your focus was on him alone, but if you factor in the rest of the team around him, then you can see why he has been on the bench. We need him though, we need him more now than before, considering the opponent to come and the possible sidelining of Kaka, and maybe he will shine, but when he is on the pitch with his countryman, he does not.
Another big issue was the lack of Pirlo, I know many of us want to see a shift of dependence away from Andrea, but none of the midfielders Becks, Flamini, or Ambro was able to provide that key link that moves and the attack from back to front. Flamini’s work rate was stellar, sure he fouled like a bear out there, but he would have made Rino proud with his constant movement and first to the ball play. Becks and Ambro did not even do all that bad on the flanks, but herein lies the problem. Milan is not a flank and cross style team, they haven’t been for a long time and this was a painful example of what happens when you force a style of play that doesn’t work. Reggina forced play this way, shut down the striker, folded their hands and prayed for the best and that is just what they got, 1 point.
The inclusion of Seeforf and Pippo paid instant dividends, and for once Carletto made the right moves, but Seeforf’s sloppy play only manifested our lack of creativity on the bench. Maybe bringing Pippo on earlier would have helped, but this is all hindsight, and there is really no going back to see if will work next time. The worse part of this really frustrating drop of points was the loss of momentum, and the injury to Kaka. No more secrets as to what is to come on the weekend, but for moralities sake this little blip couldn’t have come at a worse time.

No need to sell the farm just yet, for all you Dinho fans your boy’s chance has finally come. Is he better with our without Ricky? Can he fill in when the attacking star of this team is out? A lot of these questions will get answered, but right now this tie gets pushed to the past and the focus becomes Inter.

ronaldinho was great, but he had the support of teammates who ran around him and gave him options left right and center.
we don’t have that at milan. only pato, kaka’ and our fullbacks are fast enough to play at ronaldinho’s rate.

thinking about more, dinho can’t play like that for Milan. to maximize the output from Dinho you have to give him only one thing: FREE ROLE!
though even if you dont we’ll see some glimpses here and there and lets hope from one of those chances he can creat a goal.
every day i get less convinced by “Milan-Dinho”.

thats exactly what i meant to imply in my post nicely done Sheshan and Fetyani, Ronaldinho is not the problem, Milan is the man has recieved so much scrutiny on this blog for nothing really. in the Brazil game you saw how the whole squad understood him and communicated with him well overlapping knowing where to be creating space for him; flicks & Tricks. things you rarely see in Milan>> what the hell have our players been doing in training? unbelievable Brazil’s squad trains for 2 days Dunga gets the best out of Dinho, Ancelotti has had him for 6 months now and he still doesn’t know how to utilise him. sad stuff! . i hoped for Pato to play more and see how they interacted.

I was kinda gutted to see Lippis run end tonight but its partly his own fault for the squad he selected imo.
How the heck did Pirlo manage to get the call up in the first place??? Even as a Milanista, if i had a choice on who to call up Pirlo would have never had got a look in.
Pirlos best performance in the season so far has been ‘average’ so i saw no justification for his inclusion and he paid back Lippis decision in spades.
Talking of average – DDR stank as well.
And seeing Luca Toni reminds me of Carlo choosing Seedorf no matter how badly out of form he is in, were the heck was ADP FFS!?!?!?
Did Lippi even bother to scout his selection prior to calling them up??
Bravo Zambro tho!
He was the Italian Cafu tonight and i can only mean that as the highest compliment and was def Azzuri MOTM but then Rossi turned up in the 2nd half and made me scratch my head and ask why the hell Lippi didnt throw him on from the start in the 1st place?
Dino did cause the Azzuri probs tonight and im sure his performance will give him a much needed boost prior to the Derby but i would wait before we shower him with praise just yet. He did well but not to the same level as say Robinho in terms of sharpness.
Im not trying to be negative here but just reminding myself of how Dinos form has been as of late, ask Lippi, im sure he’ll agree now……………FORM MATTERS!!!!!

it really hurts me to say it, but Ronaldinho should have stayed at Barcelona. you build a team around a young Dinho, you dont shove him into an old different style squad.
but that doesnt mean signing him was wrong. the guy still scored 9 goals and 3 assists in the first part of the season. and its obvious he can do a lot more, but Carlo needs to sit down, have a bottle of whiskey and think his squad all over from scratch. if not, then our shot at the scudetto wont be that clear and we’ll have to wait till the summer to see him or (new coach) reshuffle this team. because we need it badly. and the thing is whenever we say we have to do a facelift, we dont really do it, so back to point zero.
is it just me or Pirlo didnt play that bad!! i say he only played bad when playing defensively. at least his passes were pure gold.

I think goal.com got it right for once; this performance on top of his good game against reggina provides optimism for the derby…
Ronaldinho 8.5 A different ‘Dinho, and one with a point to prove. Matched his marquee skills with some determined roving in midfield. A consistent 90 minutes that proved his best days are not beyond him.

yeah – goal.com also gave zambrotta 4.5 which is ludicrous. Pirlo awful by all accounts. DDR was one of the brightest on pitch along with grosso until his injury. Ronnie looked his usual happy self, of course dunga doesn’t have to bring on becks instead of him to sell jerseys. Can see maicon getting a bit of a lesson from gaucho this weekend, fingers crossed.

From the feedback from the friendly it sounds as if Ronnie might make some magic happen ONLY if he gets the proper support from the rest of the team, which is the thing I’m worrying about.
I completely agree with Feytani – we need a reshuffle desperately. Please for next season!

@fg:
I know Carlo has done and is trying his best. But, IMO, Carlo is very static in his approaches. He needs certain players with certain qualities in order for his formation to work. And if those players are out injured, then he can not or does not want to adapt his formation to suit the players available better.I feel that Milan needs to be rejuvenated one way or the other. Either by bringing in new players or to hire somebody to replace Ancelotti (Prandelli, anyone?)

the first and second half were complete opposites. i think julio cesar was the the MoM in the end. brazil didnt land a shot on goal in the second half.
but pirlo was real shit today…

Pirlo had a couple of bad moments, one of which led to a goal, but his service was terrific and formed a large part of what offense italy had today…

goal.com is now claiming kaka will play this weekend after all.
i have to say, i thought the whole “2 weeks off” business was a bit much. sounded like they wanted to get inter’s defenses down a bit, then spring kaka on them.

Guys if you have been reading some news on Goal.com http://www.goal.com/en/news/1708/ac-milan/2009/02/10/1103604/milans-derby-hopes-boosted-by-possible-kaka-return…..i read of a possible kaka return….i am confused…i dont think it can be trusted….but if its true….that’ll be a major boost…

what i think is maybe they didn’t want kaka to play the international friendly…it wud have been too tiring cos obviously he wud have played from the start….

And how was the Becks in the match…? Superstar material?

Beck’s seems to play great when his opposite number is red carded.

guys give credit when its due, Ronnie and Brazil played a fantastic match from start to finish, stayed organized and even embarassed la nazionale in my opinion, had a pacy guy say Kaka or Diego been there from the start Brazil might have scored 5 in the first half alone. Dinho played his match of the season for me and i hope he stays that sharp for the derby..whether our players feed off him remains to be seen. im sad to see Pato play so little but at least he remains fresh for the game Sunday ; )

Zambrotta got taken to the cleaners by Robinho, that’s probably the reason why he got that low score.
Posted from

Either they didn’t want him to play the friendly or Kaka wanted to avoid Robinho for another few months or weeks.

Zambrotta played real well but he struggled in a defensive phase, Marcelo was fantastic all not and Robinho did make him look like a fool with the quick feet on his way to scoring that goal. in offence he had some great runs so a 6.5 would of been justifiable, and i could go on and on and rave about how R10/8O toyed around with Italy’s midfield. he’s still got it! sorry for my excitement but as a Brazil fan these performances againts Portugal and Italy today were long overdue. Lippi made a huge mistake.

haha funny Ro, i dont think Robinho holds a grudge im sure he understands Kaka’s love for the Rossonerri! and whats up with Mark Hughes and Elano? that kid is class but the Man Shitty manager does not like him, hardly plays him tried to loan him out to QPR..wtf? apparently Mourinho wants him and he might land at Inter in the summer..FUCK!! trust me that kid is good scored a gem againts Portugal in Brazils 6-2 thrashing in the last friendly (def worth youtubing if you haven’t seen it) scored today also.
