Milan 1 – Bologna 2: The not so friendly San Siro…
By: Gianfranco | August 31st, 2008It seemed that not being able to find a live stream for the second half was a blessing in disguise as the defense once again failed a squad that dominated possession, created chances, but was unable to finish when the ball was in front of the net. I can not talk all that much about the second half, having not seen it in it’s entirety, but after sitting in the hotel room in front of my laptop and reading countless articles and match recaps I am have begun to get the idea.
Possession and offensive play was not an issue today with the play flowing from Pirlo, Flamini, Dinho, and even Seedorf. It was a variable three headed monster that kept Bologna on their heels and forcing them to crowd their penalty area in an effort to keep Milan from scoring. The problem with all the chances, close to 15 in the first half, Milan was unable to capitalize except for a great link up with Ronaldinho and Ambrosini. As I watched, I wondered how nice it would have been to have a game tested striker blasting in all those chances, I just hope Borriello can be that guy, because Pippo and Sheva proved today that they are not the ones at this point and time.
Speaking of Ronaldinho, I have to say that my expectations of him today were little to none. I was planning on him pulling up a seat on the right or flank and standing their much like I saw in the Olympics, instead much to my surprise I saw him move to the center of the pitch, the end line, and even the penalty area, truly a spectacle in itself. But he did enough and showed progression today, even though there were times when the simple pass today would have been more beneficial than the shot at the magical one, but I am learning the way he plays, and what to expect from him, but today was by no means as poor as expected.
The real issue today was Milan’s weakness on the counter attack. A kryptonite last season as well, specifically when we dropped points to the likes of Atalanta, today exposed Milan’s ability to track back when on the attack, and their penchant for becoming extremely disorganized in front of the box. Bologna was able to succeed on two well orchestrated plays that left the Rossoneri with their heads up their asses; the sad fact of the matter is that the defense played well the rest of the match. On a tactical note, there seems to be a lack of communication between CB’s and their duties specifically when a wingback is in the attack. But a DM, says Flamini or Ambro, should also be able and be responsible to fall back and fill gaps. The bright side is that this is a very fixable issue, and hopefully with some consistency in personnel it will be resolved sooner than later.
There really isn’t much more I want to say at this time, once I watch the game in its entirety I will post again. I will say however that though that if Juve and Viola draw, than this loss is far less of a travesty than it needs to be. Remember last season in the EPL Man U had only three points after three matches and what happened to them?

JP, the thing with ronaldinho was, especially in the first half, every time he got the ball he would run straight into the midfield line.
at barcelona, they’d recover the ball and pick out ronaldinho, who is stationed at the half way line (always!) between the midfield line and defensive line. once he gets the ball, he can run straight at the defense taking only one defender on. whereas today, as we saw in the first half, ronaldinho would get the ball behind the midfield line, so if he ran he would face one midfielder plus one defender; its not worth the risk of losing possession by running the ball at two people.
but thats when we get to the second half where ronaldinho shifted up to 6th gear and was tearing apart bologna on our left [their right] side. it wasnt until bologna brought in mundinyagi to help the RB mark ronaldinho that we finally saw our efforts become limited on that side. but at the same time, zambrotta was doing a wonderful job combining with ronaldinho on the left; a polar opposite of jankulovski who never managed to get past the half-way mark.
and i completely agree with you on inzaghi, there were times today where he shouldve scored. especially when ronaldinho scooped that pass for him over the defense, that was brilliant. but inzaghi did nothing with such a gracious opportunity and eventually this game with such spectacular football ended for us with such an undeserved result.

Somebody, please please tell me who the English translator at the Milan website is. This is quite possibly the best or worst metaphorical description of a match I’ve ever read. Pretty hilarious though.:
“At San Siro it’s like one of those summer days: an important party, top-class guests, a choreography of great style. Everything was perfect until an unexpected storm took everything away and canceled all the enthusiasm. The party is called Milan, the guests are Ronaldinho and Shevchenko. And there is also the lord of the house, Silvio Berlusconi himself. But the thunder and lightning come from Bologna, Di Vaio and Valiani, who were like lightning strikes on a clear day.”
Hello “Creative Writing 101″.
Ro, that story is one of the best football stories I’ve ever read. Haha, brilliant. ADP’s facial expression must have been so confused.

Shehan and JP, last season Milan played plenty a game last season where the scoreline didnt justify the product, but I am sick of saying opposition GK’s are MOTM. How many lucky games can be pulled out from guys like Antonioli everytime they play Milan. I am honestly a bit sick of it to be blunt, and wish that we had the clinical finish in front of goal to bury opponents like we should have done today.
As for Dinho, I am not used to his style of play, nor his style attack so I am learning as fan of him and as a fan of Milan. His link play today was second to none, and it was a shame that he doesnt have the striker to make his magic work ala Eto at Barca, but in time with the return of Borriello I think we may have a combo worth talking about game in and game out. I will watch the whole game and make some determinations, but I appreciate the great discussion and points of view in the season opener…

Haha Hana, that’s great. Case study of when you’ve taken a metaphor too long.

i, for one do not see the sense in putting shevchenko in there in this match. i mean he’s been training with the team for what? say week and a half? it would have been better if he was sent in when kaka was available. say in the second match or the third.

Guys, guys guys!
Last season was typified by Milan dominating teams for large spells but being unable to land the killer punch whilst at the same time being exposed at the back.
The two goals we conceded yesterday remind me of the goals we conceded against Napoli when we unveiled the Ka-Pa-Ro.
The summer saw us linked to players who it could be debated werent what Milan needed and already we can hear the knives being sharpened!
Its too easy to write off Shev & Dino (or write them up for that matter!) as you really cant judge Milan after one performance so early on in the season.
But i will say this, if, both Shev & Dino had put away the excellent chances they both had, we would surely be raining down praise on them both in unison.
I just hope we dont leave it as late as last season to rally to the cause!

why did ancellotti take jankulovski for sheva at half time? that made no sense to me at all cos they had just scored and should have tried to keep their shape rather than bring o a striker who hasnt played in 2 years according to carlo after the match. also does anyone know a good website to watch milan matches on?

mele – its hard not to be, after all that waiting & expectation, WHO isnt dissapointed after yesterdays result??
Be like me and tell yourself that we put in a promising display that gave little glimpses of how amazing this new squad COULD be.
Its Carlo who i have major doubts over now more than anyone else.
Bring back the good old days when Berlo used to march into the dressing room prior to kick off and demand that two strikers were fielded, those were the days (sigh!).

Do they really? I always wonder if the Italian version of news stories on the site is along the same lines. Nonetheless, I can’t help but think that the English translator dude likes to embellish his version…a lot. Case study, indeed. Always makes for quite the entertaining read though.
“But the thunder and lightning come from Bologna, Di Vaio and Valiani, who were like lightning strikes on a clear day.”
Honestly, I ask you…;)

Gianfranco – I can’t believe you stated Seedorf’s name as a player free flowing player in Sunday’s game!
He sucked!!!
If R80 had played like Seedorf & Seedorf like R80, you’re blog would have been dedicated to blasting R80’s hype & ineptness & the grandeur of Seedorf.
Anyways…this game was one of those freak games where you dominate but at the end of 90 mins you lose.
Nesta’s return couple with Boriello’s debut should make a marked difference against Genoa.
The christmas tree formation, along with starting Pippo was a mistake…I wrote that on several Milan sites prior to the game. We should be playing to our strengths. Pato should have started.
Gila already scored for Fiorntina, meanwhile Sheva missed an opportunity that he would have slotted home blind folded a few years ago.
Finally, R80 is a freaking monster, he was on that left side wreaking havoc for that Bologna defense…we were just unfortunate not to take the chances he provided.
Flamini & Zambrotta were good also.

Agreed, I thought Seedorf was an abomination, in particular in the last 15 minutes. How many fouls from behind did he commit because he was just out and out beaten?

To Mike – Agreed, too bad Ancelotti doesn’t have the balls to keep him on the bench.
There as one play that he just gave up cause he was beaten, threw his hands in the air, and was waiting for a whistle cause he felt he got fouled.
He’s has an ego & better not be too much of a suck as there is more than enough quality coverage for his position.

Mike & BigDawg4Milan – I have to say I was totally flabbergasted as to how crappy The Dorf played on Sunday.
Considering how well he played during preseason (obviously Dinos signing was playing on his mind) and all the moaning about how Milan didn’t need to sign Dino, he fricking blew it!
I was stunned watching him trudge half heartedly around the pitch, like a little kid who couldn’t keep up with the bigger boys!
A part of this blame should also lay at the feet of Ancelotti who, apart from being unable to impart his vision to the squad (assuming he has one!) cant seem to motivate his players to give it their all.
All they had to do was look at the Bologna players for showing how to play like your life depends on a win!

Dino on the other hand still has alot to prove, it was def great to see him in Red & Black but as JP rightly said:
“Also, Dinho looked terribly slow today, especially off the ball. I hope this is not something that lasts all year, but certainly he was not the Dinho that ravished La Liga every weekend.
He was instrumental on the goal, and alot of his passes were sublime. But Dinho is not here to be a provider, he’s here to latch the ball onto his magical feet and samba around the opposition. I didn’t see a Ronaldinho capable of doing anything like that today.”
Got 2 agree with that, Dino still has alot of work to put in before being labelled the saviour of Milan!

To Avia – R80 is still feeling his way out with this team…seeing what his teams mates like to do and not do, where they like the ball where they make their runs, and they have to do the same for him it takes time.
He ravished defences with Barca cause his team knew where they should and should NOT be so that he could work his magic, that’ll take time here in Milan.
The other thing which Shehan in his first post said is that Ronaldinho was running into 2 or 3 players when he heading into the box, and he still managed to get dangerous crosses off.
(look at how many players we’re on him when he made the cross to Sheva & a scoop pass to Pippo)
There was ZERO room in the box to run at the defence as they stuffed the box and man marked him. He would have lost possession if he tried to go any further with the ball.
So he started crossing the ball/providing the ball and making opporunities for others. And it worked…others just didn’t finish…Sheva & Pippo most noticably.
I do agree that he needs to increase his fitness and speed.
If HE needs to work on his game/fitness, (which he does) what does it say about the rest of our team when a player that is outta shape and coming off his worst ever is our best player on the pitch for our home & season opener?
Gianfranco is right a deadly no nonsense striker is needed BADLY.
Boriello to the rescue???

BigDawg4Milan – Yup, just posted on “Tuesdays Musings” my argument for Boriello to come to the rescue.
Still having flashbacks to Shevs miss! wtf! How did he not manage to score!?!
Tru what u say about Dino, i used to watch him at Barca and loved how defenders were soooo intimidated by him and the way he usually wraps up 2 to 3 players, thereby creating space in the box.
I did enjoy watchn him play and was thinking to myself how good he would be with more time playing with the squad.
Alot of our future success also will depend on how well Carlo gels the squad together and best makes use of Dino, Kaka etc.
