Lazio 0 – Milan 3
By: Gianfranco | February 3rd, 2009A tale of two halves is about all I can say about Sunday’s performance in Rome. The first half was sluggish, off the ball, and all around sloppy performance that saw Milan do very little in the attacking third, but like a good boxer, the Rossoneri bated Lazio right into their trap. As they absorbed attack after attack with their makeshift CB pairing of Bonera and Senderos the Rossoneri grew stronger and the scoring opening just at the right moment. Goals are always pivotal in a match they can either deflate your opponent or force resurgence, but in Lazio’s case, it was the knockout blow as Milan poured it on late with a three goal victory.
For this match recap I want to try a little something different, and as always would like to know what you think. Instead of reviewing the team as a whole as we typically, do I want to look at the match from each of the starting eleven…
Abbiati – How much clearer does it need be, this man is leading the charge of the Milan resurrection. His placement and angle play is impeccable as he is always in the right place with little to no effort, and his point blank on the Zarate bounce shot, and his fearless snatch of the ball at Zarate’s feet were quite easily game changing plays that helped the result. It may be early to say, but Marco Amelia may want to consider watching his backside on the Azzuri bench because Abbiati is making a case for National team inclusion. For all of you who miss Dida, maybe it is best you keep that to yourself from this point forward, Milan has a new keep, and thanks to his age we solve a problem for the foreseeable future.
Zambro – his understanding with Beckham is amazing, not sure where it came from or why it works that way but they cover for each other, push forward, at intervals and just plain did his job on Sunday. Even when out of position he managed to make the tackle when the squad needed it most.
Senderos – was he spectacular? Heavens no, but he got the job done. Sure he made some suspect clearances and at times needed cover, but he seemed to compose himself and gain confidence as the match wore on. He is still awkward as they come, but remember it is just a loan and if he can provide cover while Nesta is out then fine by me.
Bonera – stellar performance easily makes Il Capitano proud, and to think Favalli was going to get the nod over him. After Sunday should become a fixture in the CB duo with Maldini, his versatility is endearing him to me and the Rossoneri faithful, glad to have back fit and hope to see more performances like this one.
Janks – much like Zambro he just seems to get it when he is behind Ambro. They cover well and now when and how to make the run up the flanks. His short interchanges with Pato, Ambro and Kaka caused fits for the Lazio left flank and if it wasn’t for DeSilvestre playing his heart out yesterday, hopefully as a job interview, then Janks would have figured in much more. There is a lot to be said as well for Zarate’s unwillingness to push the left flank.
Ambro – the goal was pure Ambro, strong dominant header. He was caught early in the first half on a few occasions but he to found his legs and started to really push the issue as the first half wore on. In the second half he filled the left center channel nicely and was key cog in the possession machine. Not his greatest performance from start to finish but he found his groove like the rest of the squad.
Pirlo – also struggled at times with poor passes, but his calm and controlled play really helped shut Lazio in the second half. He did look fatigued late, and we still lack a straight sub for the midfield maestro, but the week’s rest should do him well. I would like to see him mix it up more on the attack as he was playing much more withdrawn than normal, maybe it was tactics, maybe it was tired legs, either way it would be nice to see him more with the ball around the box.
Becks – Look I like the guy, always have, and it is no secret, but his inclusion in this squad has done wonders for the game of Kaka and Pato. Let make this as clear as possible, Becks is a complimentary player he is not the “show” and by providing the pass, cross, and flanking run he is maximizing touches for Pato and Kaka who are thriving because of it. Ronaldinho is not a complimentary and therefore he begs for the touches that are currently feeding Kaka and Pato and in a some weird way he is detracting from their game. Dinho also camps on the left, and we all know that Pato and Kaka’s bread and butter is interchange play and Becks is helping that out as well by knowing when to pull back and when to join the attack. If it was up to me Becks would be here to stay, Dinho would be shipped to Man City and Seedorf would snuggle up next to Dida on the bench. This way Becks and kaka could play behind Pato, and Rino can take his place at the RM, or even Flamini. A Milan team with that setup would look a lot like the last Milan team that won the scudetto, would it not?

Seedorf – not sure what it is, maybe age before our eyes, but Clarence has clearly lost a step. In the process he is forcing passes and missing more than half, not to mention he slows play down to often to be valuable on the counter. He was and always has been a good soldier, but it is time he starts to realize that his value to the club may be more as a bench player, considering the current injuries/suspensions at the club, I can justify his presence but these poor performances can no longer be acceptable or glossed over.
Kaka- his goal was class, his loss of touch on his first chance was not. If Kaka’s recent run of form is not reason enough to keep Dinho on the bench than I don’t what to tell you. Many of you were heartbroken at the thought of losing Ricky to Man City, shouldn’t you be just as heartbroken knowing that he is uncomfortable on the pitch when Dinho is included! The man cleary stated he was not comfortable with the Dinho’s presence, if he is the future of the club then more than just me should be listening.
Pato – his relationship with Becks is amazing. They have an understanding on the pitch that is a joy to watch; maybe it was Beck’s time with R99 that gave him this ability with Pato? Whatever it is, it is fantastic and I am sure if you asked Pato what to do he would gladly tell you. I would like to point out that DeSilvestre played extremely well against him in the first half, and pretty much neutralized him, but as soon as the Duck started to drift out of DeSilvestre’s stomping ground Pato came alive and no one else in the Lazio defense could get a hold on him. I said it before and I will say again, please tell me someone was watching DeSilvestre!
Hats off to Lazio for really a playing a strong first half hour, they played the equivalent of a basketball full court press and rarely let Milan out of their half of the pitch. But just as we see it with the Rossoneri when you can’t make good on that kind of tactical play you will struggle to keep up the pace, and for once in what seems like ages Milan capitalized on Lazio’s mistakes, and on the greater scale Juventus’s mistakes. Six points is all that separates us from the top, but Reggina is first and until then the derby is just another match a few weeks down the road.
The man just says the right things…
Let me know your thoughts on the format, positive and negative!

Ranjeet with all due respect go F yourself. You’re probably one of those sucks who hated watching Ronaldinho dominate this sport for years. Kaka is not Ronaldinho my friend, never will be. Doesn;t have the talent. He’s pure speed with few moves and creativity. If Dinho wants, he’s the best period. Live with it. He may very well be a lazy F. Who knows. I have no clue and surely you don’t, unless you work for MIlan or are Kaka’s boyfriend buddy. Past it Brazilian? Lol. 28 yrs old. He may be lazy, but “past it” truly tells me what you know about this sport. Respect another’s opinion dummy.

I agree with Mohammad – either replace Seedorf with Ronnie, or get back Gourcuff to replace him. Either way the dorfmeister has to go. Game after game he’s been the weakest link, and I can’t remember the last time he’s played well, kinda says something about his constistency on the pitch. Ronnie needs a run, why else did we pay all that money for him – to keep the bench warm? Waste of talent.

DORF out.
DINHO in…thats what will settle this debate.!
and I would love to see Dinho on the field with the current lineup.

yup alessandro…Carletto have to told ronnie that we need he passing skill and his visions…ronnie still have a big influence in the game if he was given a chance to do it…and for me he will openly accept the Seedorf’s place and do all the provind works…at the end of the day player like him want to play football…
Cuffy in other hand is a future prospect and it’s a right move to not sell him at the moment….
gave the kid a chance to prove it,i have the borduex game online and he is looking impressive….
looks very mature and strong…
remember he can also play as a winger, attackking midfielder and central midfielder….
the best thing is he is not intefering with kaka position when he was playing with us….later…. http://acmilan-fanatic.blogspot.com

“if dinho wants…”
those are the key words, my friend. and apparently, right now, dinho does not wants…it’s pretty simple: when seedorf plays, kaka stays up the field on offense. and seedorf, painful as his offense can be, actually plays defense. watch the last match again. notice which players get back into their own box time and again – beckham and seedorf.
when was the last time you saw dinho in his own box? he just doesn’t play that role. which means if he’s on the field, kaka has to do it. and that won’t fly in milan.
so either dinho suddenly finds a love of running, or he might be done in milan.

You know, Seedorf’s running hasn’t been any better than Dinhos.

Meanwhile, Beckham was all over the pitch for 90 mins. That is a true professional.

Hey Paul i don’t agree with you at all because if Kaka’ is jealous of Dinho why didn’t he move to man city for a record deal? You wil have to admit that when Kaka’ is playing at his best he will not notice Dinho so if the we just wait 4 him to hit that form we can also play Dinho as well it common sense to do this.

boy, a lot of hatred for Dinho and Seedorf, huh? I’ve begun complaining about Seedorf since a few years ago, noting that he is very slow and likes to slow down our counter-attacks. He too, very often loses possession. However, having said that, Seedorf, IMO, has a very good understanding with Kaka. And the fact that he’s very close with Ancelotti is what keeps him in the starting line-up. I don’t agree with just getting rid of Seedorf, but I think we should slowly ease him out. He still works hard and you can usually spot him all over the pitch. And, more importantly, he still scores the occasional important goals, like the one against Bologna a couple of weeks ago.
Re: Kaka and Dinho. Of course Kaka is technically worse than Dinho. Everybody knows that. But, Kaka is far more influential for Milan than Dinho is. I don’t think Kaka is a crybaby, however, I also don’t think Dinho is entirely lazy and is at fault. Dinho is the type of player that needs a lot of touches. However, with the way Milan is playing, that’s actually a bad thing, because then we have to force a lot of balls into Dinho. Insert Seedorf who only has to find Kaka/Pato with simple passes, it’s a perfect fit. This is actually why I don’t think Gourcuff would do well in Seedorf’s place too. Gourcuff may do better learning Pirlo’s role.
For Dinho to be successful, he needs to change his playing style differently, understanding that Kaka is the center of Milan’s offense, not him. He has to get the passes to Kaka faster. Another alternative is to employ a slightly different playing style with Dinho in the line-up. Put Dinho more in the central role, and let Kaka and Pato roam the flanks.

Beckham is still world-class player. At the beginning I thought he will not play too much, and that he was loaned only because of his brand name. Anyway, few English players succeed in Italy.

great debate about ronnie and dorf! no matter how you slice it, giving clarence 100% of the playing time and zero to ronnie (like at lazio) makes no sense whatsoever..

Ronnie can a seedorf style if Carletto told him so…
who is the better passer?? its ronnie
who have the better skill?? its ronnie
who have the better vision?? its ronnieits whether Carletto want it or not,if he want the midfield to have more creativity and penetration pick ronnie, if he wanted the team to be rubbish pick seedorf…
we as a fan have our own opinion….

Look I dont know how else to make sense with this, Ronnie cant play a Seedorf style, he proved it time and again, he is a different player and this is not FIFA 09, you cant just plug players in and expect magic. Dinho and Seedorf are two completely different players, and I will support Dorf game in and game out if the “team” performances continue. Yes Dinho scored some goals, great thats fine, but those matches were close scrappy affairs. Sans Dinho, Pato and Kaka have turned it onto a whole new level, we are scoring more, and the games are not as close because we can keep posession without Dinho trying to dribble through fourteen players. I am sorry, if this sounds harsh, but he doesnt fit the current squad, we are not Barca, he has to work here and adapt, and he doesnt seem willing to do that. Kaka is the talisman of this team, and he is not a baby, he has earned that title and respectfully deserved it and if the fans and club didnt believe that they wouldnt have camped outside of his window to keep him at Milan. FUCK Ronaldinho, and until he becomes a team player and accepts his roles and responsiblities on this club he can continue to rot on the bench because that is where that type of mentallity belongs….again my apologies for sounding harsh, but sometimes the truth comes out that way…

Agreed Gian…this team looks much better without Dinho in there. Its clear in the play of Kaka and Pato that they are playing at a higher level without him in there. Sometimes players don’t fit and it has to be realized. It doesn’t mean Dinho can’t be successful somewhere else, but he doesn’t fit this Milan team and they are playing much better without him. There is no way to argue that this isn’t the case. Can’t use the he isn’t fit excuse anymore since he has had 6 months to get into shape.

Paul, you are an idiot. I never said Kaka was better. If you love Ronaldinho you can take him. I said that Mila are doing well without Ronnie, and so he can go fuck off.
Ronaldinho was a great, but he wont reach those heights again. And even he does,I dont want him at Milan. Kaka is the present and future of Milan, and Dinho can take his lazy ass to Man. City.
You didnt seem to understand what I said. Try to understand the meaning before putting up nonsensical posts. This was a discussion of whether Dinho playing is good for Milan, not whether Dinho is great or no.Posted from

EXACTLY GIAN. Ronaldinho plays better than Seedorf, but the team plays a 100 times better without Dinho. And I dont care if Seedorf plays crap as long as the team plays well.If you remember, when Dinho was in the lineup at the start,we went to the top of the table,BUT we were so unconvincing. We struggled to win,but now we are playing so freely.

moka -”You know, Seedorf’s running hasn’t been any better than Dinhos.”
well, seedorf may nut run any FASTER than dinho…but he does, eventually, get back on defense. thus creating a link to the forwards. the same can’t really be said for dinho. the only time he’s back on defense is when he’s standing in a wall.

Are u guys crazy about selling Rhonnie? He has won crucial matches for us in the first half of the season. Yes, he is slow, lethargic and all those things. But neverthless an important asset to have in the team.
You just cannot write off a good talent. Remember the AC vs Inter derby. Hell, forget it. He rescued us from the defeat against Portsmouth, and some other UEFA cup matches. We qualified second in the group, with late goals from him.
Now that the team is doing well without him, doesn’t mean it always will. I definetly believe he has atleast 2 years of competitive football left in him.
And yes we have to give playing time for youngsters like Gourcuff(once he comes back), Darmian etc. But, Rhonnie definetly would play a good substitutes’ role once we are in UCL, with all the demanding fixtures. You need talent there not work rate like a horse.

Look it doesn’t matter if its Rhonnie or some five year old kid. If you have a player playing for himself in the team you need to fix it ASAP and if Rhonnie does start to play the ball around he can improve players form such as Seedorf, Pirlo, and Kaka’ who just need some quality time on the ball to set them back on track.
