Inter 2 Milan 1, It’s Over…

By: Gianfranco | February 16th, 2009

Remove yourself from the game for one second, and take a look at the picture below. With no prior knowledge of the game, no bias towards teams, and no real bias whatsoever, the verdict is easy.

A picture is worth a thousand words, but in this case only needs to be one word, Handball! I will not say another word about it. Stank’s goal was so stout that Milan deserved this loss, and the fact that Inter did not get back on the board again is a testament to the guts of the current captain, Paolo, and the future captain Ambro.

The tone for yesterday’s match was set two minutes in. Muntari’s hard tackle on Beck’s which led to a hamstring injury so early on, that it left Milan dazed and confused. Beck’s was hurt, and much like the every other game this season, Carletto’s hands were tied. The man needed to come off, but putting Pippo on so early in the match and expecting him to last just couldn’t work. Do you make one sub, only to have sub your sub? Do you bring in Flamini and concede the attack? Do you watch Pippo run out of gas in the 75th minute? The injury hurt, bad timing, left Milan ailing, but most importantly let Inter get a taste for blood and they did not quit for the rest of the match.

Defensively Milan was not all that bad, we all know they are susceptible to the counter; it is a byproduct of a 35 year old averaged defensive line. Yes Kaladze was poor, and Janks forget that he had defensive responsibilities but when you take a glance at the roster, you leave yourself wondering who if anyone could have done better? With Paolo making Ibra wish he hadn’t been born, it was only natural that the Adriano, Stank, and Maicon would have free space that Ibra was no longer working in. Yes Adriano beat Paolo in the dribble but if you Adriano that is a must no? The emperor can’t outrun the 42 year old, but when that 42 year old is the best player on your team defensively, the defense has work to do. Credits to Abbiati as well, who many people are still razzing, but when Dida is considered “one of them” Abbiati is the real deal.

Let us speak for a minute about the midfield; there were three players in the line in front of the defense. Yes, I couldn’t believe it either, for awhile I thought only Ambrosini was playing. Let’s stop for a minute and thank Ambro for the tackle on Stank, it kept the game scoreless for the time being and let Inter know that some of the guys in red and black were here to play, and were not about to back down, it is too bad that that play was the statement play of the game for Milan…

Yes Becks got hurt, but Pirlo was nowhere to be found, and when Seedorf moved back into the line he was a lost cause as well. Seedorf was consistently a step to slow and Milan paid for it time and time again. The other issue is that when Inter moved the ball past the halfway line and Ambro was out of the play, they received absolutely no harassment and were given space to play straight down the throat of Milan’s defense. This is a byproduct of the lack of Rino, but it is unacceptable against any team, the higher you play defense, ala the Lazio match, the better off you are, it is another simple tactical issue that has been lost in the world of Rossoneri calcio.

Hats off to Pato, who did everything he could to shake two to three defenders at a time. Kid has lighting in his boots, but the poor guy was literally all alone up top. Pippo was also a breath of fresh air, but seemed a bit too little too late though no Interista can tell you he didn’t scare them. Some of you may say, hey but Dinho was there to help right? NO, he was not. I am really done even talking about Dinho anymore, he has done NOTHING to deserve some of the defense he gets here from you as fans, and more importantly his three good contributions per match do not outweigh his failures. To sum up Dinho yesterday, it takes one play, in the 85th minute; it is engrained in my brain and may in fact never ever leave my mind. It is the 85th minute and Dinho is em.barking in another lethargic attack when he is dispossessed by Patrick Vieira. The Rossoneri are down a goal and the match is waning away, any player would go studs up in attempt to win back the ball from the aging lanky Frenchman, hell Rino would have chopped him in half. Instead, what does “your” Brazilian wonderboy do, NOTHING. So you ask Gian, but it was the waning minutes of the biggest match of the year, Paolo’s last derby, the game that keeps the squad in the title race, and the chance to beat Inter twice in one season and what did Dinho do? He quit, he gave up, and he chose not to tackle, and for that he will never be forgiven in my eyes, never given a chance, and never be a Rossonero. Defend him if you want, but you may as well root for Inter if that is the road you are going to take, what he has done is inexcusable.

I had the pleasure yesterday of watching this match with my father and family, like many Milan matches we enjoyed pasta, cutlets, and salad and once again were treated to a miserable Milan performance. We all place blame somewhere else, me Dinho, you Carletto, and others Seedorf and so on. No real sense in placing blame anymore, because for me it appears that the game has moved beyond our team. The roster lacks bite on the sub, creativity is limited, and the team is no longer versatile as it was once with way to many one trick ponies and non- adaptable players. As I watched Jose Mourinho throw on his seventh defender, not once did I ask myself if all seven guys were lined up in the back? No, these players worked their way into the midfield and helped in the back, save for Antonin and Janks, this just doesn’t happen at Milan, and for that alone it seems that the scudetto is in fact an unattainable goal.

Cagliari caused us some trouble earlier on, i think we dropped two points away to them. and goal.com is starting to tick me off with thier ridiculous headlines, Vidic is well settled in United and they know it darn well. and about Fet’s toilet pic its amazing how it got to the Curva Sud in the Derby, not only is it a small world but it says a lot about this blogs impact.

This is why Beckham is annoying:
    http://www.gazzetta.it/gallery/Calcio/vuoto.shtml?2009/02_Febbraio/milan/01&12

The coverage of Milan is 95% Becks, 4% Dinho, and 1% everyone else.

I understand that he sells, but c’mon… Milan has like 29 players on their squad. Surely someone besides Becks and Dinho deserve to get photographed! (they have the 1 token Maldini photo).

    Yikes

I agree completely. Oh well, it’ll all be mercifully over once Beckham’s gone.

Ronnie is a wannabe thug with the ghetto clothing and bling. The difference is he bought bigger shirts only when he started getting fat near the end of his stint with Barcelona.

ok i’ll talk as a mature football fan…and away from the kids stuff….i’m a fan of barcelona and i have a huge amount of respect for milan, and i’m aldo a fan of Ronnie…but i will say the truth about him if he didnt perform well…in the derby Ronnie dished seven spectacular assists to pato, seedorf, and inzagi, and none were finished like their sapposed to…you say Dinho does not defend well or fight for the ball…i’v watched him for 5 years in barcelona and he never defends or fights for the ball…one more thing that makes me think, when KAKA is not playing well i dont c any1 pointing fingers at him… but hey its your opinion and i respect it and good luck for the milan next time.

I have to laugh at this assessment of the match really. The most important part is the way you look at things Gianfranco. I am guessing you’re Italian. Did you watch the Brasil Italy friendly? The difference between Milan and Brasil is in Brasil they give Dinho the ball. In MIlan arrogant, slow, methodical players like Pirlo and Seedorf slow the game down and negatively impact Dinho and Pato. Dinho needs the ball. The guy is a magician, period! He showed playing for Brasil he needs the ball and does wonders with it. WHen he had the ball, he breastfed Pato and others WHO DID NOT FINISH. Stop blaming Dinho for heaven’s sake.

Listen, if Milan got Ronaldinho to play defense and run back, YOU GOT THE WRONG PLAYER. He is the best offensive threat in the past 5 years, still can be. He is slowly coming back. If people think he has lost a step watch the Brasil Italy friendly again. The guy had a very good game and you guys have the audacity to talk poorly of him.

MIlan has too much trash and it’s time to clean house: Kaladze is garbage. Maldini bloody done. Pirlo and Seedorf really need to sit down and not play. How the hell does Ancelotti sit down Dinho for Seedorf Pirlo or Beckham is nuts!!! How is Flamini a player with pace sitting for these clowns??? He is a fossil loving coach. Can’t get past what these guys have done for MIlan. This game had chances at both ends. I think MIlan for the most part dominated play, just could not finish and of course you can’t compare Milan’s goalie or defense to Inter’s.

Reading your comments make it seem like Dinho is washed up and was one of the poorer players on the pitch. You are entitled to your opinion and my respect for your commentary is done. I don’t know what game you watched. If you want a team of Gattuso’s well good luck scoring a freaking goal. It’s a team for a reason. People need to understand their ROLES. Dinho’s role is to setup plays and score. He needs the ball to do that. What the hell is Pirlo and Seedorf’s role? To slow the game to a grinding halt!!!!!! Brasil 2 Italy 0. BY flare, skill, magic. Dinho and Robinho dominated.

So please enough about Dinho. Players that need to be GONE: Kaladze, Maldini, Pirlo, Seedorf. Play Flamini and AMbrosini as defensive midfielders while Gattuso is out. Have the trio of Brasilians. Ancelotti has one simple stupid message for his team…get the ball to Dinho, Pato and Kaka…and hurry with it!

AND I REPEAT: Dinho is not a hustler, a defender…NEVER HAS BEEN. He never was in Barca. He did not win player of the year 2x because of defense!!!! If that is what Ancelotti wanted then Galliani is an idiot. WE have the wrong coach for this team. Pure and simple. Ancelotti is gone after this season. Bring in Rikaard and watch the fun begin.

avia, if not carlo then who? this bunch we have, has been together for 7-8 years, even more so in case of some players. a new fellow comes in, and would take his time to make a rapport with the team. big names don’t always matter. in any case we are looking at couple of thoroughly wrecked seasons in that case. could have been different if maldini was still playing. he commands the squad’s respect and everybody’s else for that matter and would’ve smoothed the transition but he ain’t gonna be there next year. besides he’s not looking forward to a new coach either. that’s what i fear and that’s my two cents.

Paul I totally agree with you, and I’m Italian. So perhaps there is something else that is sparking GF’s bias [no offence intended]

Personally I’m glad he’s at Milan. And if anything his arrival further exposes Ancelotti’s pathetic lack of tactics/integration for this squad. Seriously, he’s gotta go.

garry – why not someone like Hiddink or even Scolari??

I think what we need is someone completely removed from this group of players who wont give a monkies about what they might have achieved under Carlo.

Someone who will make make them fight everyweek for inclusion.

We will only lose over the next couple of seasons if someone like Leonardo takes over (ie no experience of winning league titles or competitons) we need someone with a good track record!

Just saw the DERBY game again:
-Adriano goal was handball w/o doubt
-Pippo was pulled down in the box! no card?
-Pippo’s goal, although offside, WAS AMAZING!
-Ambro slid to save that goal! classic.
-Pato is great, will be a legend!
    -Defense needs a makeover
    -Ronnie was good
-we could use a 2nd World class Striker.
-Becks should leave or stay for CHEAP.
    -sell: Seedorf, Pirlo, Emerson, etc…
    good bye

I can’t wait to see how AC Milan and Inter Milan do later in the champions league. They’re both good teams but AC Milan should win. They have the best players and just need to pull themselves together.
