Five Days Clean!?!

By: Gianfranco | October 13th, 2009

After leading the HS Boy’s team I coach out against the number one team in the State, only to lose by a PK, I did the unthinkable, I swore off the beautiful game for five days!! A recounting of my plight…

Friday Evening: Stopped off at the local video game store, picked up some Western shoot-em up, and proceeded to play said Western shoot-em up while watching the Yankees beat the Twins. I am a Yankee fan, but boy is baseball another World after watching a neat and tidy ninety minute football match.

Saturday: Woke up, took the dog for a massively long walk. Went shopping with the GF and then waited for my friends to arrive because we were supposed to go to Boston to watch the Revolution play the Columbus Crew, so much for soccer-free weekend, but bear with me. The game itself was abysmal; the Revolution despite being a man up for close to thirty minutes did nothing to attack, reminds me of a certain Milan. Final determination this was not football as we know it! Or maybe it was who knows…I lasted less than 24 hours…going to keep trying…

Sunday: Day of American Football, during an International break to boot, if there was a Sunday where you wanted to avoid Soccer this was certainly it. Mission Accomplished!

Monday: Day off. Went on a hike, a real hike, even took some photos of foliage and scenery. Crazy really, the only pictures on the camera that were not soccer related. Then watched my Jets implode against the Dolphins. Again yearning and wishing that this was real Football and that I was not strung along aimlessly through a seesaw battle…not sure if that really is all that much different!?

Tuesday: Day off from work so I planned errands haircut, the dreaded DMV, and bringing in patio furniture for the impending winter, oh the excitement of my life! But soon my moratorium would be lifted, I wrote this blog, penned some training sessions for the week and got ready to go to practice. Relief…

So what is my final verdict on my attempted football-free days? Empty, really truly empty, I did my best to avoid the blog, websites, and just about anything else, but in the end it just doesn’t feel right. Maybe the few days off reinforced my love for the game and how much I do truly miss it when it’s gone. So as I prepare a week of lesson plans for the boys, I wonder if Milan is on the same track, and if they are preparing for Roma on the weekend. Back to business as usual in the next day or so…thanks for sticking around during myself imposed exile, and I hope you can at least find a chuckle at my desperate attempt at a normal possibly feeble existence!

Sorry I wrote Cowell becuase you said Pop Idol, you are correct on Fuller.

It is not that he doesnt try in the MLS, but the quality of play is very low, and that is reflected in his product on the field. I watch the Red Bulls and Revolution on occasion as well, but the biggest thing I notice is Donvan in the US shirt vs a Galaxy, for the Galaxy he to looks bogged down and slow…where he is dynamic on the international stage…MLS is nice yes, but the quality is lacking…you yourself called it a pub league…

I am lost on the Van Persie comment? Beckham was a big reason Real turned that last title around, and Milan finished third, very near second, because of their form from January-Early April…

As for the EPL and the FA, those issue don’t bear on the Beckham issue, but I firmly believe that thanks to Don Fabio and the likes of Wayne Rooney and Lamps England will be the WC10 Champs…meaning Becks would easily go down as the one of the best footballers ever…

As for Milan suing the US, I would like to think and hope they would not stoop that low and leave it at that…

“but he did what many a “professional footballer” has failed to do and that is WORK HARD to achieve a personal goal for himself and for his fans”

Are you serious? All he did last season at the Galaxy was work hard at being an ass (and a media darling). He is a little better this season, but I think that is because the management in LA finally realized that his personal charisma was not going to carry a whole team (plus they have a pretty good coach now).

“You dont put a sweet navigation system in a shitty corolla, and in essence that is what MLS has done with the Galaxy.”

Wow. What an incredibly condescending thing to write. So it is the MLS’s fault that Beckham was a flop? Seems to me that if you put that system in the corolla and you still cant find your way then it sure isn’t the car’s fault. Maybe the system wasn’t nearly as sweet as the commercial said it was.

Fay – I’m going to have to agree with Gian on Becks. He tries no matter where he goes, but Capello made it clear he has to play in Europe for a chance to compete for a squad spot.

The reason he flourishes in Serie A and Milan is because the people he has around him can actual control the ball and pass accurately. Anybody who’s played any sport before knows that your game elevates and drops with the level of play of the league you’re in.

“he tries where ever he goes” except in America. where he is now. and the last 3 years.

Am, GF the van persie reference is because in the last crucial game of the season becks was walking around doing his patrick viera impersonation, trying to kick things that were too quick for him, so they took him off and van persie came on and scored two goals to win the league.

atleast he admits selling gorcuff was a mistake,

Italy’s final World Cup qualifiers – a draw with Ireland on Saturday and a win against Cyprus on Wednesday – were marked by former Milan player Alberto Gilardino scoring four times for the Azzurri.

Berlusconi made a small joke regarding the player, who was unable to settle in at the San Siro.

“I was wrong when I bought him and now I made a mistake when I sold him,” he laughed.

“This is how things go now, when I buy it is a mistake and when I sell it is an error, just like with [Yoann] Gourcuff.”

Fadayn I am still not sure Van Persie ever played for Madrid, and am further confused. Johonna, MLS did everything it could to make the Galaxy a sucess bending rules, adding players, and what happened the team still sucked. What they should have done was found someone to get on the end of the crosses and use the left over money for 8 defenders…but that is neither here nor there.

Beckham is a passer of the ball, he has never been a player to dribble through five players and score, nor has he ever been one to shade central…so in essence Fad you are asking him to do things that he has never done because of his play style. There is a differnce in asking a player to track back, a fundamental need in football, or asking a guy to dribble through ten man…something the Galaxy did to a guy not capable of it…tihs argument can go on for days, and it would be like trying to convince a Dinho fan that he know sucks, virtually impossible, but MLS dropped the ball and made Becks the scapegoat…again I am confident he will get the last laugh…

When decks does his sweet passing in MLS the players don’t know how to handle them and usually mess it up.

But at AC Milan they control it without a thought. It’s like going from a black and white tube to that new HD tv format their selling… what is that… LED TV?

david beckham is the biggest sell out in the entire world. you cant read fhm because he is selling everything and anything on every other page. hes a walking advert, hes not even a person anymore.

his career is finished at the top level. if i was a milan fan i would take it as a personal insult that fester is yet again focusing on a over the hill celebrity football

Sam you make a fair point, with Becks and Dinho, but for Becks it would be like asking him to do more than he is capable, while Dinho I am merely ask to track back and pressure the ball, or move his feet…

LOL the debate about becks, who cares if he is a walking advert, lets not forget that his contract with the galaxy basically says that he has to do whatever they ask him to do in term of advertisment ( in order to get the 250 million for five years). I however think that becks coming to milan is a good thing, this guy did wonders at milan when he came last year, and I have no problem with him getting riled up and acting like a Gatuso on the field, at least he shows some fire…either way lets lay that point to rest, he is coming and as milan fans lets hope he does what he is intending to do. On another note, Borrielo and Silva are both set for a return against Roma…anything short of a win is a disaster.

Now I just wish the rumors were true with these wingbacks and mids.

I’m am not a Beckham fan but he has had his moments of skill and glory, and he will goto the world cup next year with Capello and a better record than say the Azzuri or even Argentina. Its funny reading this blog to see how razzled people get over him. This excitement and animosity just goes to prove that he is somewhat unique. Why do people get pissed off when Beckham’s in an underwear ad when all the marketable athletes in America do the same: Michael Jordan sells Hanes, McDonald’s, Nikewear and even world.com. Michael Phelps sells the Rosetta stone Language Learning series (he can barely speak and write “American”). What does it matter what these people do off the field so long as they can play in an effective team. I agree with AJ in that Beckham will provide some benefit. Alex–at least he’s a celebrity footballer. Some people are just celebrities. And some aren’t even footballers anymore.

GF, i too think beckham will get the last laugh. Lets see what happens in South Africa next year.
