Catania 0 Milan 2, The Hunter!?

By: Gianfranco | November 30th, 2009

An interesting game to say the least; shades of poor performances like those against Bari and Livorno in the attacking third, but defensively this was a stronger and more balanced performance than any other game this season. Sadly though as I re-watch flashes of the match I can’t pinpoint any moments of inventive or even productive possession play to justify the two goal victory, and I am not beyond stating that Catania clearly earned themselves a point in this match. The casual fan will quickly recite media friendly tidbits such as, “Milan had the lions’ share of possession, and deserved the win” or “KJH has arrived in the red and black,” but sadly these little ramblings only gloss over the facts that played out over the full ninety.

I will start simply with the possession, then onto Leo, and finally I will discuss KJH, and may not make any friends doing so, but the realist in me can’t be stopped. Two simple questions to start: is possession still worthwhile if it is around and behind the center circle? Is a pass still great, inventive, or visionary if it doesn’t hit its target?

So why did I ask those questions to begin the discussion of possession? Frankly because the idea of dominating possession and losing or drawing is intriguing, our Milan has done it numerous times, and even yesterday I watched as Arsenal possessed the ball a fair share only to fall to Carletto’s Chelsea by the vicious counters of Didier Drogba. So I will get to my point now; sure Milan had nearly 70% possession against Catania, but the majority of that ball control was absolutely useless, it was rarely forward with any precision. Instead it was often back, or lateral or short into positions dictated by Catania.

So why did Milan’s passes do so little to pressure Catania offensively? Personnel in the form of Ambro and Flamini do not hold the passing ability or control and presence that are provided by Pirlo. Yes he has been poor as of late, and even I have called for his benching, but today was easily the biggest advertisement or justification for his inclusion. Even if some of his passes go wide, or his tackles are occasionally mistimed, he provides a forward movement or invention that lacked in a bad way. Sans Pirlo the entire attack was forced to operate in a more confined space in front of the Catania defense with no stretch, and forcing Pato and Dinho to move closer to the midfield rendering them further less effective than past matches. Still want to argue the benching or value of Pirlo? Does anyone want to answer my pass question from before now?

I am a bit upset at Leo for still sticking so hard to some of these players despite the midweek match. Zambro could have easily been rested, and Ambro should have been subbed. You can even argue that Dinho needed the rest despite being extremely consistent and solid yet again. I do still believe Borriello played well as he constantly won balls in front of the CB’s but there were no penetrating runs to expose the defense and really no danger for Catania. Pato however continues to disappoint, he shows flashes of amazing ability, but his decision making is still beyond his technical abilities and speed, and feels even more like he is regressing in the 4-3-3. I will give him the benefit of the doubt and chalk his regression to learning the new system, but he needs to be far more dangerous than this for success.

Finally I will say flat out that I am not ready to anoint KJH with anything. I will gladly say thank you for the two goals and the three points that he secured, but in the end I am not convinced and have to say this was a fluke, and here is why. His first goal was a GK howler, a HUGE HOWLER really, and his shot was not even as a strong as portrayed. In fact the sheer fact that he got the shot in the first place was a product of Pippo’s right place right time pass. The second goal was a again a byproduct of Pippo, and the fact that KJH was literally in the same exact spot showed how poorly he places himself in the run of play, and sadly like all awkward and haphazardly things in life, was rewarded! Not to mention the guy chipped the keeper!? I will leave that reasoning up to you…when is the last time a player chipped a keeper on the goal line from 15 yards out…FLUKE!? Again I am not mad that he scored, but I really don’t want to be reading crap like this for the next 6 days before the match against Sampdoria. He has far more to prove if he wants a starting spot or even a bench spot on this team.

Finally, let’s continue to enjoy this unbeaten run!

How come our Old boy Kaka, came in sixth place in Ballon D’or, ahead of Zlatan and Wayne Rooney. We didn’t even play UCL last season.

By number of goals he scored last season. They must be kidding. He was getting injured frequently and I his contribution to the team was average.

All our achievement last season was automatic qualification for Champions league. And I don’t know whether they are considering his playing time at Real Madrid. Nothing much he has done there i suppose, except for some good performances.

Let’s just have a little thought experiment.

Imagine for a moment that Huntelaar had started and played like Boriello. And that Boriello had come off the bench and done what Huntelaar did. Does anyone seriously think this post would have done anything other than praise Boriello’s genius and called for him to start? Of course, one of them is Italian and one of them isn’t.

For me, I’m personally biased towards winning. And beautiful chipped goals.

I don’t care who starts. Boz has done quite well recently. And we have been more effective when he plays. All our attackers were pants on Sunday, other than KJH’s cameo game-winning appearance, but thats no reason to change it all around again.

I think KJH deserves some more game time though. Maybe the final half hour? How does Leo work this one out though – KJH will be full of confidence after his 2 goals, should he start? And Boz will be wanting to show why he should be first starter, should he start?

My take on it is that KJH has more technique than Boz, but Boz is physically stronger and more powerful. Different types of strikers.

This discussion is useless, bottom line is – unlike all of us here, Leonardo works with these players every day in training and watches them in games they play against one another on a smaller field. Therefore, he has more info on individual players than any of us can ever dream of having. So far he has made some surprising but great decisions, and I trust him to do the same in the next game. All there is to it. We can speculate all we want but we have to realize speculation is all we’re doing.

Since Boriello has been more consistant he should still start.
But the first one off the bench to sub a striker shouldn’t be Pippo anymore.

as usual giancarlo grabs the opportunity to beat on huntelaar, congratulations for coming up with your ridiculous ideas, i enjoy reading your article just to see what you come up with. the only thing that makes sense in this column is just that leo needs to change up some squad players to prevent fatigue, but to a limited extent as the squad is obviously very limited. young players such as strasser, zigoni, digennaro etc cannot just be thrown into an important match like this, especially since they would have the burden or carrying on ronaldinho or pato’s job.
as to the huntelaar’s goals, the first one was not a HUGE HOWLER as you seem to be trying to make out, try to remember that Huntelaar shot with his left foot so it was obviously not so powerful, there were two players in front of the keeper which impaird his vision and slowed him down, he could have done better ofc but i wouldnt put the blame on him. when boriello scored vs marseille it was primarily heinze’s fault and the keeper could have saved it for sure, but everyone said what a brilliant goal it was (and it was). as to the second goal, it was the only option as from that angle it was impossible to generate power, it was impeccably placed, as you said he chipped it from 15 yards with the keeper at the post and the keeper didnt go anywhere near, it was no fluke as you are saying, and the look of surprise and shock which you saw on huntelaar’s face must be simply your imagination, after all the mind sees what it wants to see.
try to be more open minded and give credit where its worth. your negativity doesnt do acmilan any good, if the players remaind pessimist instead of looking forward we would be middle table right now.

Gian, i have to echo a number of the sentiments here

Yeah the possession vs doing something good with all that possession i agree with but i thought Hunters first goal was instinctive where as his second was sublime!

What i noticed was the way Pippo set those goals up for him so im even happy to suggest we drop PATO and let Hunter play alongside Bori in the next match (yup i said it)

But i def agree that Leo should include more players but like myu said – Leo has done faaaaaaar more with this squad than Carlo did

Here we go again, Avia! :p

We were actually doing pretty well at this point last season too. If you remember, we even hit first place after the game against Napoli. And we qualified in first place in the CL group.

Secondly, Leo did this with Nesta and Silva in central defense. We all know that our central defensive partnership, even with Maldini was not even moderately as close to being as good as it is this year.

I would argue that our central defense this year has been exponentially more important than a player like Kaka was last year at this point in the season.

Although I do salivate at the thought of Kaka in our attack this year when we have a strong central defensive pairing to back up our team.

at this point I’ll take what I can get, The good news is that Samp just lost, and not only so, but they also have two players suspended due to red cards. Palermo not too far after are also missing both Miccoli and Conti due two game ban as well, so things might be a little easier for us I hope. We definitly need a good string of results to continue into the break. Fiorentina is a bit more relaxed so the last game before the break should be the toughest. so as I see it, a must win vs. Samp, a must win vs. Zurich, a Must win vs. Palermo, and depending on the results of the other games in the leauge, I would take a draw against Fiorentina…I would still prefer a win! I’m beyond happy for KJH though, i mean really as i said before, if anyone needed to score in this game, it was him, and hopefully that monkey is off his back!

Gianfranco, I agree that Huntelaar needs to proof more but he didn’t really get a change the last months!
In his first weeks he didn’t play well but that I allready expected that because the Italian competition is a bit different from the Spanish an Dutch.
Believe me that when Leonardo let him play every game he wil score more than Pippo and Borrielo together.

Talking about both goals you seem to forget that both attacks starts with Huntelaar.
Huntelaar -> Pippo -> Huntelaar Goal!!

Talking about the second goal I don’t think Pippo ever made such a beautifal goal!

AJ – hey man, anything you can do to pass the time ’til the weekend man!

I have long suspected the Mourniho would never see out a long time with the merda and i have a gut feeling that this will be his last season, regardless of the recent rumours and stories about him i cant see him staying past the end of this season

But got to wonder where he will end up, Madrid?

He’ll probably go to Liverpool,if Benitez gets fired. Somehow, though it doesnt seem like happening.
Madrid demand attacking football.Mourinho is the complete opposite. He’ll get fired 10 minutes into their first match should he take over.

Gattusso could exit if he wants to…
so can Zambro, Ambro, Pirlo, Dida, Seedorf…
we need fresh replacments for these oldies who will bring more pace and potential to our squad.
i think we all agree here but just commenting on that article AJ posted above about Rino.
