Buon Natale a Tutti…

By: Gianfranco | December 25th, 2008

Hope everyone is enjoying their holiday, but as always there is business to be discussed.

Before we take the time to discuss the potential January transfer season, I feel the need to grade the summer transfers at the half way point (or close) of the season. I would like to cover both additions and subtractions and as always your take is always welcome.

Abbiati – A

Considering last year’s Dida debacle, having a steady netminder has been a godsend. Abbiati has played in every game in the Serie A, and for the most part has been a rock between the pipes. No GK is mistake free, except of course Gigi Buffon, but he too has his problems specifically with injury. Abbiati has made some killer saves and his level head has been a plus, especially when called upon to keep the game close or in Sunday’s case keep Udinese out of the game time and time again. Historically Milan has never relied on the keeper because of the airtight defense but for me Abbiati has been as reliable as they come and when I look up and down the Serie A list of keepers he is easily on the top of the list.

Dinho – B

The only thing that keeps this grade from A is the fact that we have not played lights out calcio when he is in the match. He has also failed to gel with his country mates to the high standard that we had imagined. However his contribution has been welcome as have his goals, I just hope he continues to strive for fitness and achieve the highest levels for the Rossoneri.

Sheva – F

I hate to do it to him, but he has not done a thing to prove his courtship and return to the fold. He has also struggled to regain any semblance of form. For all the good he has done in the past it may be time to seriously consider the notion that his career is on the downturn and he must accept that role from grace and take a page from the playbook of the super-sub Pippo Inzaghi.

Flamini – C

He has not met expectations; however he has struggled with injuries and lack of playing time so it is not completely his fault. But he needs to make bigger impact in games and find a comfortable place on the pitch. He was a beast at Arsenal and earned the title of the next Gattuso, but he only made Rino mad and made him even harder to displace on the pitch.

Senderos – F

When you buy damaged goods, you get what you pay for. Not much else to say here other a big disappointment.

Antonini – B

The kid has been a nice addition. His pace has proved helpful and his exuberance has been a nice touch as well. He can and hopefully will be better, but the brass seems to have brought him back at just the right the time and he is making his way into the squad as a backup but also a replacement for the aging wingbacks.

Zambro – C

I had this vision of Zambrotta marauding up and down the flank and destroying Serie A defenders and attackers. Problem was my vision was based on a vintage 2006 Zambrotta but the year is in fact 2008 going on 2009. He is a step slower, and his defensive shortcomings which were exposed at Barca seem to be even more glaring in the Rossoneri. He is still an above average player who is capable and experienced but his loss of step is painfully obvious as he struggles to kept too far into the attack or worse not far enough back on defense.

Borriello – C

I struggled with this mark because the matches in which Marco has played we won, and it was not hard to see the budding relationship with Pato. However, if you are brought in to score goals and you are putting up goose eggs week in and week out something is wrong. Maybe it is the big stage? Maybe it is the shadow of Gila? Whatever it is something is not right with Marco and the two injuries are not helping. He needs to come out swinging in the second half and he seems like the type of player who wants so badly to make that happen. With success comes the call up and I think Marco is hungry for it.

The next few transfers were subtractions and the grade is solely for Milan, not the player, and they were all horrible failures…

Gourcuff – F

The question is if you keep Gourcuff and don’t bring in Flamini do both players have the same fate. It is always easier to make these calls in hindsight but Gourcuff is a having a breakout season in a much easier league. I am not sure he will or can succeed in the Carletto system, but I can’t help but wonder how he would do paired up with Kaka or Dinho in the attacking midfield line.

Oddo – F

He has become a solid cog in the Bayern machine and as our defensive woes were mounting along with injuries I miss the wild man bad crosses or not. I always liked, in fact more than Zambro, and if I had to choose the two from what I saw last season I would have taken Oddo. Zambro declined while Oddo was playing well, hell he played in our CL final game, and that should count for something. I am curious if in fact he will be brought back or if he will tell Fester to shove it and get a fat contract to stay at Bayern.

Abate – F

Watching Ignazio play the right flank for Torino over the weekend made wonder why on Earth we play Emerson but couldn’t play this kid. He was everywhere on the pitch and his willingness to get into the tackle and into the attack was amazing. Like Antonini he is hungry and though he is playing and developing nicely, I hate the idea of another team grooming our future winger, or someone else’s for that matter.

The saving grace for these three gents is that they are all on loan and can be brought back, but with every returning man someone is shown the door, I can gladly help in that switch if needed.

    Sanjay;

    - I don’t know Italian, but isn’t it obvious it means Merry Christmas? :P
    - GF did ratings on the new signings.
    - The lone goal against Napoli was an own-goal from a Dinho free-kick. Kaka missed a penalty in the 85th minute in that game, but he did pretty well overall.

Wow GF, thats a pretty generous rating of Dinho given your past comments. Are you becoming an R10 lover ever so slowly?

why is it, you guys think, that Dinho isn’t gelling as well as what you expected?

    Shingi:
He’s only been with us for half a season, still. He needs time to gel with the squad and on top of that he’s still not in the best shape of his life. Also he has to adjust to the style of the league. La Liga is, in my opinion the “cupcake” league. Serie A is tough on attackers due to the history of “Catenaccio” (the very defensive style Italian teams use) But despite all those things he’s still done quite well in my opinion. Next half of the season the only place he’s going is up!

In a year or two Milan should go for Handanovic and then the goalkeeper issue would be done for the next 5 to 10 years.
    Happy holidays.

shingi, as we’ve both discussed before, it all has to do with movement from the midfield trio into the final third.

with no movement around him, ronaldinho has nowhere to pass too. except immobile targets, which won’t help the movement up the pitch at all.

hmmm, la liga does have a reputation for having a cupcake league, yet most of the great skill players of footballing history have spent at least a couple of years in Spain (Puskas, Di Stefano, Cruyff, Maradona, Zidane, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho)

I’d say it’s oriented more towards the spectacular than to the functional – I guess that’s why Capello was sacked after winning the league for Madrid. So I guess Dinho is still more used to being a showpony than the ruthless no.10 that Milan’s environment demands

Ronaldinho is a proven match and trophy winner. It is very unfair to label him as being a showpony over one who makes telling impacts on games. Part of his game is to play with style, that does not mean he’s not effective.

I think he has done very well so far, much better than I had anticipated. I also think Ancelotti is now on the right path to play Kaka and Dinho effectively. By pushing Kaka up as a deep striker, they won’t be treading on each other’s toes and Kaka’s pace and skill will be utilised in a more dangerous area, close to goal.

And people are making too much of Ronaldinho’s ‘runs’ or lack thereof. That aspect was never the main attribute of his game; passing and in particular, the incisive, defense splitting pass, has always been his signature.

He has already shown up plenty of those examples for Milan.

Carlo has to find a way to change tactics to make Dinho effective. If he fails, either he can leave and a new coach can try, or Dinho can leave and this problem can be stopped.

But yeah, the tactics in the Udinese game were good. Pushing Kaka upfront helps him,and that where he can be deadly. Dinho can play a bit in the centre, instead of the left flank.

Galliani said that we were looking for a left sided or central PLAYER. What position does that mean? Midfield or defense?

A, i agree i think Ronaldinhos been pretty good. There have been several winning goals off his boots/head and our season could be far worse if we didnt have dinho. I think part of the Kaka-dinho problem is that we expect both to be on top of their game at once.

Dinho’s runs were important at his peak, i remember that 3-0 win at madrid and he was skipping past players, id love to see it again, but he is still one of the best midfielders without those runs.

I think you need to expect that one will have a quiet game while the other is on fire. I think Ronnie did well in the udinese game, he realised kaka and pato were effective against the udinese defence and made sure they were getting as much ball as possible.

Sam, I too follow Neo sports, I don’t remember when they telecasted Milan game live. All the times I see, there would be teams from the middle of the table in the encounter. Even games with teams involving the top four like Inter, Juve or Viola is less. There website doesn’t give which teams are involved in the fixture and is limited to matches starting at 18.30 or 19.30 IST.

They telecast big matches in Bundesliga.

Serie A has to do some serious marketing in Asia.

Sushan, they showed Reggina vs Milan and Torina vs Milan this season. They also showed live matches of Atalanta vs Juve and Inter vs Siena back to back. I understand that, in Italy, every stadium has the right to sell the broadcasting rights to anyone, if they want to. They also showed the Milan derby of the last season in which we lost 4-3 (F*** Julio Cruz).

If I rememebr right, last season’s Napoli vs Milan was not showed on any channel anywhere in the world. I seems Napoli have given the permission to Neo Sports to broadcast matches this season. They kept showing Naopoli vs Lecce again and again in the last 10 days.

I hate clubs/league which overhype or aggresively market themselves (read EPL) but I wish to watch Serie A matches on TV. I understand that Neo Sports got the rights to air any Bundesliga match, not limited to matches involving top teams. I hope they do the same next season with Serie A. It sucks to catch some poor quality live stream on the internet.

We all know that if Dinho goes back to full fitness (i.e. he begins to take on players by actually running), then just think what him and Kaka would do together. When you know someone can do wayy better by putting a little more effort, then it’s annoying seeing him not put that extra effort (i.e. effort to run). But then again, he’s prolly not running b/c he knows he might not get past them, so I really hope he works on his fitness.

“Let’s see if we manage to find a player who can play as a left full-back as well as a central defender, otherwise we remain as we are.” – Galliani

Central-defender, YES. Left-back, sure but first things first.

CD: Maldini, Kaladze, Bonera, Senderos, Favalli, Nesta

.. not ONE reliable player. Maldini is probably the most reliable if we had to choose one, but come on! We need someone class to partner Maldini.

I’m just glad Galliani knows what we need.

We have Janks consistently doing OK in left back position. Plus Zambro and Antonini can also play as left backs. Add to that we have Massimo Oddo loaned out who is again a left back. So, why the hell do we need a left back?

Galliani should concentrate on bringing a pure world class central defender. No full back business for me in transfer window.
