Better Late Than Never

By: Gianfranco | December 16th, 2008

Struggled with this post for quite a few days partly because I couldn’t find the words and partly because I was having some technical difficulties with my new laptop, regardless both problems are gone and I want to recap what was one of the single hardest games to watch as a Milan fan for more reasons than just the loss.

I am not really go deep into the match here because there is not all that much to talk about. No one had a good game, Maldini made some stellar defensive plays, but those don’t really mean much considering the end result. The team showed a flash or two here or there of knowing how to play, but never really did anything all that special. Without naming names a certain bunch of players flat out sucked, Pirlo, Pato, Seedorf, Kaladze, Dinho, and Emerson, sorry I let that slip, but I think I have made my point.

The reason I don’t want to go into the match is because the problems with this squad far outweigh the problems that were shown in this game. Not to mention the repercussions of this loss are far deeper than a few of us wanted to mention in the comments. For me this loss is the one that kisses the scudetto goodbye, I will not be optimistic here, it will take a small miracle for Milan to play through these injuries and push the top of the table. It will also take a bit of falling off from Juventus and Inter, only their play deep into the CL could possibly save us. Ol’Sil may have beaten me to it, but the objective of the 08 mission is now to qualify for the CL and quite possibly win the UEFA Cup.

As I do with most tough Milan losses, I call my cousin in the boot to discuss, and both of us came up with the same end result following our discussion. It is time to rebuild this club. Burn me at the stake if you want, but selling Kaka, Dinho, or even Pirlo will make way for a new crop of young blood and talent that this team can be built around. While the fire sale happens you may as well interview some new coaches with a short list including Van Basten, The Don, Frankie Rijkaard, and Arsene Wenger. It is time for a change…

It may seem like I am throwing in the towel , but my optimism has long since gone. Watching Juventus flaunt a team of youngsters all capable of ball control, attacks, and speed left me jealous. Watching Amauri do the Dinho dance only compounded my desire for a beast of a striker capable of that “kick the other team in the mouth” mentality. Ranieri has the embarrassment of riches that Milan can only one day hope to have.

As I finish ranting I want to leave you with two quotes from the comments that have stuck with me for the past few days the first being from Shingi:

“You can’t be mad at an old racehorse after he gets beat by a stud.”

With the second being from BigDawg:

“Maybe they (Milan) just aren’t as good as we thought they were.”

My apologies if they are not exact, but either way they ring true in this circumstance and should give food for thought as this season continues. Tomorrow Milan plays Wolfsburg in an absolutely meaningless game, but for morales sake, and the confidence of many fans, a win would go a long way in making us remember if in fact this team is capable of it. Or they will just hang onto mediocrity with every last shred of strength. Tomorrow should be a run out for a fair share of youngsters such as Antonini, Vuidez, and others. It will show Carletto does in fact have have the ability to pick youngsters and see who is capable in the Serie A as well. If Carletto however goes with Favalli, Emerson, and Seedorf than my white flag is in fact right on time.

you know, why don’t we just fire everybody, right? I mean, after all, Milan is rich, we can just buy a whole new squad, right?

I mean, people who win lots of trophies while spending responsibly must be stupid if they don’t win all the time, right? I mean look at Abramovic, Calderon, and those Arab guys who took over Man City – let’s be more like them and go after all the big name players we can afford. I mean after all, you have to spend tons to win lots of trophies, right?!?!

no one in their right mind would want dida and emerson so i think they will be at milan for another couple of years. anybody read what rino was saying about beckham’s arrival being very strange for such a short period of time? i like the way he thinks, no bullshit. the story about the doctors changing the scapels was brilliant as well!

why are we tied with these people????

I WOULD LIKE TO GO AFTER:
    S. Ramos
    T. Silva
    even Mexes !
either one or all would be great!!!
    AND THE BEST STRIKER AVAILABLE!!!
(give Pato someone to work with.)

and now that the games over… I’m sick.
    we are mediocre at best.

I LOVE MILAN, I have since 1990, but the current state of the team is just sad. I do support Carlo, but something obviously has to change. If he doesn’t get it working, then somebody else is needed to get it done.

IMO the physical training is off. bigtime!
the players are not fit to play it seems.
Seedorf is walking around basically asking people to take the ball from him, get him outta here quick! Dinho is slow at times, definitely not at full speed! The entire defense is slow and weak!!!
On top of all that! injuries are obviously killing us right now and I just think Carlo+Galliani+Berlu need to be thinking about canning a couple of players (Favalli, Emerson, Seedorf, Sheva, Senderos, Nesta, Kalac, Pirlo, Kaladze, Dida, Maldini(retire), Pippo(retire)… freeing up some space and $$$. and make whatever $$$ we could make off of them. 5cent and a stick of gum for Emerson & Favalli.

    Stay with the core of:
Gattuso, Kaka, R80-Dinho, Ambro, Pato, Boriello, Antonini, Cardacio, Bonera, Zambrotta, Flamini, Darmian, Janks, Abbiati, and hope some of the other youngsters turn out nicely…
*build on this core and bring in two world class defenders & one amazing striker and I believe we are back in business!!!

basically I want younger & fresher legs out there representing the ROSSONERI.
I just want to see a re-energizing boost to my beloved Rossoneri !!!
    Forza MILAN !

PS: David Villa & Pato up front would be sick!!!

    thats what i’m saying:

i’m hoping things get better quick.

i found myself wondering what was the point of this game from milan’s perspective. ancelotti said he wanted to win the group, but did not field a very strong side nor did the team play hard or well enough to win. the opposing squad did not seem very imposing (to put it mildly), but we let them walk away with a very satisfying (for them) tie. was the idea really to rest a few guys and make sure that no one else got hurt, or what? regardless of the “plan,” one can be sure that management will once again dismiss a disappointing result as of little consequence…

didnt get the chance to watch the game. and i really dont care about the draw that much, well not yet. waiting for seire a.

Management are screwing themselves by screwing Kaka. give the kid a chance, dont give him the team he grew up watching as a kid. and when its his time to shine and lead the team, noooo you bring back two washed up players, Sheva & Dinho! the only reason i was for Dinho it was because the deal was for 20 million euro. and what do you think Caradcio and Viduez feel like when Emerson is starting! if they’re not good, why did we get them, we didnt even get the chance to watch them and judge them. we’re almost clueless about them. and sheva, i was one of the happy milanisti when he came back. remember, family forgives & forgets. also remember, family members knows whats best for the family so when you know its time, you should just hang up your boots and give someone else a chance who could do something. Sheva is done and will never ever ever ever come back.

    players to get rid of.

    Goal Keepers: Dida & Kalac.

Defenders: Kaladze, Nesta, Janko, Favalli, Zambro.

Midfield: Emerson, Seedorf, Dinho. (Pirlo: 1-2 years. Gattuso: 2-3 years)

Attack: Sheva, Pippo (become a trainer, im sure he’ll still score), Borriello (get me a god damn real fucking striker you fucking assholes!!!!)

gila has 12 goals in 14 games. borriello has 1 in 7.

so we need to get rid of 14 players, and get a group of 14 of mix of talent, young, smart and can do something for the team. not just gloat about the past.

no need to get the best and most expensive, being smart can help. we got Kaka for 10 million worth over 100 now. Pato for 20 million, we can cash in right now off him, but we better not. thiago silva 10 million, voted best PLAYER in Brazil!! and he’s a defender!

the only reason i was accepting this squad, is that i dont care about next season, i just wanted this season’s scudetto and this team on paper looks the best, but apparently we are far from that.

god help us, it wont be easy. i really hope im wrong, im not giving up just pointing out our mistakes.

Tevez should be the number one target for you this summer.

Dessena would fit in nicely in your midfield to replace Seedorf.

Santacroce would make a nice partnership with T. Silva.

Selling Kaka would be stupid, as most of you pointed out money is not an issue with this team. These three targets are all realistic except for Santacroce maybe. Instead of focusing on BIG NAMES focus on consistency, and promise.

adam, we did sign thiago silva, but he wont play for us until next June 09, because we filled all our EU spots *cough* sheva.

i think we can get them all if we really want them and try hard. we’ll give them 5 million + kaladze or Janko or anyone we dont need for Santacroce. ive always been a fan of Tevez, long before he joined the EPL. worst thing he has done was to go to west ham first. its better to start your fresh european career under a big boss who will want to make you his own great superstar. id rather take back Gourcuff, only if Carlo puts his faith in him.

the best surprise, Sacchi comes back. that man is all about training. there has been rumors of him coming back for a while, why not for us. even though he sometimes say my beautiful history with milan is over.

Milan doesnt need a face lift, we need a revolution!!

rome wasn’t built in a day folks.

everybody take a breath for a second.

we’re 3rd in the serie A, qualified in the knockout stages of the uefa cup, nobody gives a shit about the coppa italia so who cares about that.

inter are bound to drop lots of points in the second half of the season. not even halfway through the season and everybody is saying goodbye.

drink some water, take a breath, get some sleep, read a book, smile. then think about the wonderful things in life. then think about milan’s current situation. its not that bad at all…

exaggeration is the name of the game here, and its pretty facetious…

Right on, Shehan. It’s not time to panic, though it is a bit embarassing Milan could only manage 2nd in a Uefa cup group.

Dida should be dumped as soon as Milan possibly can. If I’m not mistaken, he is the 2nd highest earner on Milan after Kaka’ right now. Kalac seems perfectly capable as a reserve keeper, no need to dump him. Seedorf, Gattuso, and Pirlo all have several years left. I don’t think the formation is suiting them well. Janks, Zambrotta, and Kaladze still have time left. But they are old, they can’t be playing twice a week.

Fetyani…you mention Gila’s stats v. Borriello, but a year ago when Borriello was not at Milan and Gila was, it was reversed. I think it says less about Gila/Marco than it does about Milan or Ancelotti’s ability to play to their strengths.

im only pissed because we were suppose to have the “revolution” in 07. but we won the CL, and its wasnt luck, just a shock. but nonetheless we still had to change that team. but nope, uncle fester went crazy. and we did it in the worse way possible, we started getting back players who already shined or did not convince at all. (Vieri, Ronaldo, Olivera…)

and alessio, im not blaming Borriello at all. him & Gila simply dont fit the Milan formation (well at the moment the milan formation in general is just messed up). thats what the coaching staff and the transfer guru should be discussing at all time to make sure we get the players we actually need.

its just frustrating when your club is somewhat in denial, and im a bit in panic.

I agree Fetyani, their attitude is more worrying than the squad itself.

It’s just too unbalanced. You have 3 world-class trequartistas, but no real target men. Then of course you have the world’s best regista. When you’ve got two of them up top, Pirlo is going to get marginalized. Milan has no real wingers though, except from support from the fullbacks.

Alessio, they are four young, in form defenders away from being an awesome squad. With flamini and gattuso to flank pirlo, kaka pato dinho trident up front and four quality defenders to watch their back this will be a great team.

I’m taking a mini break from this whole thing…I can’t handle all the drama…Milan need to learn to park the freaking drama llama outside and not in the middle of the freaking pitch…when that happens everything will be well at the San Siro again.

Ramos wont come. I think someone like Agger,Alex or Zapata is a more realistic option. I do think though that we need a young fullback.
As long as our defense holds its own,i expect we will win against Udinese. But I expect it to screw up so I am going for 1:1.
