Wednesday Milan Musings, Where do we go from here…

By: Gianfranco | March 5th, 2008

It is eerily starting to feel like one of the worst periods I can ever remember for the Rossoneri. 11 seasons ago Milan looked a bit like it does now, and though it may be hard to really think and talk about it, it is really worth exploring the cause and aftermath and how it matches what is going on now.

null

The 1996-1997 Serie A campaign was the final one for the last great man to wear the armband for the Rossoneri, Franco Baresi. Milan was in a period of coaching transition, aging veterans, and coming off old success. They were never really able to get off the ground under Oscar Tabarez and after a bit of a coaching carousel ending with the return of Don Fabio, Milan finished 11th in the table, and crashed out of Champions League ending the final season of Franco Baresi on a very low note. Though it was as terrible time that lead two a season or two of abysmal performances, it was not long before the squad was tinkered with, young players were brought in and Milan were once again fighting for the scudetto and the Champions League trophy once again with Alberto Zaccheroni winning the scudetto in 00-01 and Carletto earning CL glory in 03.

The recipe for the rebirth of that squad was to maintain a nucleus of Italian players such as Maldini, Costacurta, and Albertini, while adding good foreign players, such as Sheva, to compliment the Italian talent. The club also established youngsters such as Ambrosini, Gattuso, and the former greats of Coco, even somewhat Panucci, and later Ricky Kaka. It was a very strong systematic approach that helped resurrect a club that needed a good kick in the pants.

null

Fast forward, Milan now sit in 5th place in Serie A, crashed out of the CL, and having an aging lineup with another, even greater, captain preparing to call it quits. By the looks of things we are headed into another dark age of the Rossoneri, but alas there may still be hope. With proper recognition of the problem, and the avoidance of the doomed coaching carousel Milan can come out of this stronger, younger, and challenging even sooner for the a place at the top, where we all believe they belong. My recipe for the rebirth of the Rossoneri is as follows: (feel free to share yours as well)

Coach: Carletto is a great coach, but his time at Milan, in my opinion is all done. He has achieved everything that was expected of him and it times to inject some new leadership into the squad. The Milan brass need to identify and hire a coach with strong pedigree and past experience to avoid having to fire and rehire and cause unneeded upheaval. My coach would come of the pool of Frank Rijkaard, Lippi, or Mourinho. We all know what Jose and Lippi can do, but people forget that Frankie did some great things at Barca, and is another coach who has worn out his time at the club. Also Rijkaard’s teams play beautiful football, and we deserve to see some of that again.

Defense: The defense needs an overhaul of young players to back up and circulate with the veterans. Guys like Favalli, Cafu, Simic and even Janks need to make way for a new blood. As I have always said thank you for the time and service, but it is time everyone amicably parts ways. Getting Zambrotta would be nice as well.

Midfield: Is where we are still strong, but youth and attacking talent is needed. Seedorf has been a loyal servant, but he needs to make way for Cuffy, or another young tre-quartista or winger to compliment the new coaches system.

Strikers: Pato will be successful but he still has a lot to learn and Pippo will be a great threat from the bench. Gila needs to move on not only for his own sake, but for the sake of the club as well, a new coach may help him, but he may not stay around that long to find out. Milan need to bring back Borriello as well, I have seen the goals he scores, this guy is for real, and he plays with fire and heart that, no offense, only an Italian can in the Serie A can do. It does not mean that another veteran striker cannot be added, as well as another youngster. Again it depends on the coach and system, for example with Jose comes Drogba or Eto with Frankie. If Lippi comes in, I would expect an influx of Italians who want to rekindle the WC06 glory such as Luca Toni….again we can postulate and certainly dream, but only time will shape the stikers.

Out with the Old and in with new…dark days have come and gone, and hopefully they will come and go again.

    Maldini Reconsiders Retirement

Milan legend Paolo Maldini has sensationally admitted he may reconsider his retirement at the end of this season.
He turns 40 in the summer and had said repeatedly he would hang up his boots in 2008, but a resurgence of form and lack of injury worries might make him change his mind.
“I have a lot of energy left. One must be consistent, but at the same time only an idiot doesn’t change his mind,” smiled Maldini.
“In these last few months my knees are no longer hurting very much. The club and fans are pushing me to play for another year.
“I have to admit, three months ago I was in a much worse condition and had to stay out for five months following surgery. Now I feel better and am even playing in a role I hadn’t tried for quite a while.”
Due to injury problems throughout the side, Maldini has returned to the left-back position and performed admirably against the youngsters of Arsenal.
“That was a painful defeat, but it is easier to accept when you have achieved so much,” he said of the 2-0 Champions League exit.
“I think the fans understood that too. Arsenal deserved to win. They play beautiful, fast, total football.
“That competition has given me so much. The first trophy was the most exciting, then the first I lifted as a captain, as it came nine years afterwards.”
With this second round elimination, many have urged the Rossoneri to completely revolutionise the squad.
“I don’t think that’s necessary. We need the right men, going for quality not quantity. Our past is not so remote, as in the past 12 months we have won the Champions League, European Super Cup and Club World Cup.
“If we look at what we have achieved over the past 20 years compared to Arsenal, there is a huge difference.”
Maldini has been at the forefront of that winning era and spent his entire career with this club.
“I never considered leaving. I was born here in a football sense and never really thought about a change of scenery.
“In the past there was contact with Chelsea. I was coming off a disappointing season and asked myself some questions, but at the end I decided to stay.”
Could the man with the most Italy caps in history come out of international retirement for Euro 2008?
    “No thanks.”

Hallelujah there is a God after all!!! (opps not supposed to use the H word, but I think God will understand)

OMG PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE LET IT BE TRUE!!!!

Hey fet I think he might have read your comment in the last post… :-P

Here are some names that they are throwing around on milannews.it:
    Gianluca Zambrotta
    Hugo Lloris (Goalkeeper)
    Diego Alves (Goalkeeper)
Alex Sandro da Silva (Central Defender) (He would be free)
Thiago Emiliano da Silva (Central Defender)
Juan Manuel Vargas (From Catania) (Defensive Midfielder/ Midfielder/ Left back)
Grimi (Possibly bringing him back because he’s supposedly had a very good season on Loan)
José Bosingwa da Silva (right back/winger)
    Rafael Scapini De Almeida (Midfielder)
    Miguel Monteiro (right back)
Daniel Alves (Right back/ right winger)
    Cristián Zapata (defender)

Rafael Márquez Álvarez (Centre Back,Defensive Midfielder)
Mexes (But we all know that’s not going to happen)
Adrian Cacere (Left Winger, Attacking Midfielder)

Ok heres the thing all these people have in comon…they are all foreign except for zambro, more then half are in some defending position, and they are almost all brazilian.

im sure we’ll get a defender, we already have Marzoratti and im sure we can get our hands on a few young talented players and nurture them. and we must still spend big bucks on a striker. That Nessuno player looks like he’s gonna be our biggest star, all odds are on his side. i know i know lol, it means nothing =)

latest news. Milan met with Drogba’s representatives and said that Milan are willing to pay around 20 million euro. Also, its being rumored that Sheva could leave for 10 million.

and ro, its not because of my post. i actually sent Maldini a letter via acmilan.com, i was pissed after the game i sent him an apology letter, that we couldnt give him the perfect season he deserved. 24 hours later, he wants to stay, not because of th thousands of letters he got begging him to stay, not because of the fans crying for him to stay, not because his teammates want him to stay. then who? yup, you’re right, because of me :). if you guys wants Baresi and Van Basten back just let me know.

Have stayed away intentionally to chill and let things sink in.

Gian (aka Big G, is that official now btw?) I think if you look back to 96/97 that was FAR worse coz I distinctly remember the feeling of Milan being impotent and feeling totally helpless, ok we’ve recently suffered a set back but I still have faith for next season. (Unlike 11 years ago!) Remember we still have a good “spine of players” which we’ve agreed on before, so chin up!

Our immediate priority is securing 4th place because, as someone rightly said, the CL is part of Milan’s DNA. To not be in the competition, which would have its advantages (like securing la scudetto) would a black mark against our heritage.

I’m counting on the Milan management to spend alot of the sponsorship money they are soon to receive via the deal with Adidas.

The main problem, as we have all come to realise is not the lack of talent in our squad but the lack of depth! Carletto has increasingly in imo stuck to several types of play/formation which is partly down to his own preference but also due the lack of different types of players in the squad and therefore lack of OPTIONS. This was a creeping realisation for me last season but due to the success in silverware people decided to maintain the existing squad (bar Ronaldo and Emerson) but the problem has now been exposed for everyone to see, not just the Milan tifosi.

Football in now at a point where a team in expected to challenge both domestically AND on an international stage (take note Galliani! Oh yeah, I know you read these posts!) we need a coach who will make better use of a wider set of players.

If a team comes to the San Siro and digs in and only defends, change your tactics & players to get around it! Don’t most teams go to Old Trafford and the Nou Camp and only defend? You still see the home teams at those stadiums scoring!

Management: I’m happy for Galliani to be replaced with Moggi (im sure ive seen someone here also suggest it- the guys a shark and FAR more ruthless than Fester!)

    Coach (in preferred order):
Mourinho (will guarantee a more robust team – will def solve our defensive problems and instil more belief in the players),
Rijkaard (will let Milan play with more flair – Barca have played some stunning football this season),
Lippi (both flair and robustness- best overall knowledge of italian calcio)

The Goalie problem: Bring back Abbiati (how good a proposition that must look now!) and get Frey! This way we can guarantee that we have both a good number one as well as an equally good stand in.

Defence: I’m sorry, i dont buy the “no-one sells their defenders” rubbish (we sold Sheva for petes sake!) if you want a player bad enough cough up the dough! We break the bank to buy Ramos from Madrid (it can be done) and build around a Ramos and Nesta partnership.

Get Zamborotta and make moves to unsettle Cannavaro (we have to be ruthless!) at Madrid. Job Done! Keep a hold of Oddo and Kaladze and we have a good defensive unit.

Maldini should stay on ONLY if he sees Milan buying big this summer, otherwise he will have to
re-live what he has just recently gone through. REALLY don’t want to see that!

Midfield: Just add Ribery & Essien to the mix and stir with Pirlo, Rino, sweet! (I’m still making my mind up about Ambro!). Cuffy we MUST keep for the future.

Strikers: We sign Drogba, Sheva, Benzema and bring back Boriello and add Pato, Paloschi and Super Pips!

You give a squad like this to any of the coaches I have named above and they build around our existing (and fairly robust) spine of players (Nesta, Oddo, Pirlo, Rino, Kaka etc) and we will win not only the CL next season but also the scudetto!

Sell Kaka. Use the proceeds to buy Zambrotta, Grosso, the entire attack from Udinese, Luca Toni and a world-class keeper. Give Ancelotti one year and if he doesn’t produce, bring Lippi on board. Problems solved.

thats just plain stupid. we will never sell kaka, unless he asks to leave. if we sell him, we’d sell him for a maximum of 70-80 million. believe me, we have way more money, and plenty enough for the transfer market to get whomever is available for any given price. our smart genius bosses were willing to spend 90 mil on Dinho. We have the money, but apparently lack brains. players are out there, why dont we get them, only god knows why, i also doubt it at times with our strange behaviors.

Are you really saying we should sell Kaka to buy those players? We have the money to buy pretty much anyone and everyone, that’s not the issue. Don’t get me wrong, I’d like to get all of those players but financially speaking we could keep Kaka also?

    Wow, good conversational piece!

Although i understand the arguments for why you would sell Kaka you have to bear in mind the counter arguments.

Firstly, as Fet rightly points out, we arent short of money, if we were, Kaka would probs be the first and most obvious choice for offloading.

Secondly, in the way that Roma wouldnt part with Totti or Barca with Dino neither should/could Milan part with a player who not only symbolises the squad and team but has to big an effect on the team ON the pitch.

C’mon, he’s one of those players you label “Talismanic” if it wasnt for Kaka, i truly believe we would never have won the CL last year.

Lastly, Kaka genuinely WANTS to stay at Milan, for a player who knows he could walk into ANY team in the world and command pretty much ANY wage he wants, and has just only recently committed himself to the club for another 5yrs, would you really want to get rid of him? Really?

In an age where some players act like mercenaries and sell themselves to the highest bidder, showing no loyalty or gratitude to the team they are willing to walk out on. (Remember the s**t storm when Ronaldo walked out on Inter?)

This would send out the wrong message to possible future signings – some guys might want to come to Milan BECAUSE we have a player like Kaka. Right now, out there somewhere is the future Shev and he’s dreaming of coming to join us and add to our rich history, lets encourage him for the right reasons!

You can keep your money Madrid, im holding onto the player who answers only to Jesus!

    Forza Milan!

Right on avia…you said everything I was thinking.

Remember we got Pato because we had Kaka…his parents and he both admitted that milan were the best club not only because of their accolades and their players but because Kaka was a part of the team and knew he would be a good example to Pato.

funny that you should say we are strong in midfield, because that’s where one of our biggest weaknesses lays (ok, ok, along with goal, fullback and attack). the problem in midfield is that we have absolutely no cover for pirlo, seedorf and kaka. gourcuff is mediocre at best, and although i wish carlo would give him more playing time, he really hasn’t done much to earn any. the only area in midfield where we are covered well is the holding midfield where rino, ambro and emerdason are all very capable. get rid of that punk brocchi, though, he is just a jack of all trades (or just a jack-off) who sucks equally at everything instead of being good in any one area. we really need to buy cover for pirlo (oh why did we miss out on ever banega?) and another attacking mid who can rotate for kaka and seedorf, who although is still a demigod, simply cannot play 60 games per season.
