Tuesday Milan Musings

By: Gianfranco | August 12th, 2008

This has not exactly been the best few days to be a Milan fan. Another preseason loss, a ton more excuses from management, and lot more uncertainty. Just a few talking points to carry us through another week, I just wish Milan would pass whatever meds Fester is on to us so we can live in bliss of thinking this team is A-OK.

-The Kaka rumors continue and a lot of us are dealing with it differently time and time again. I have waivered, considered, and reconsidered but all the sign points to the fact that Kaka needs Milan, and Milan needs him. If Real would just sell Robinho to Chelsea this would be all over, sooner and make us feel better.

-Speaking of Chelsea, Ivanovic’s agent says that a deal is very near and his client will choose Milan over Juve. Quite frankly I do not care who the heck Milan get to fill in at CB, but it has to be someone. It also has to be someone soon because…

-Dario Simic’s Rossoneri career is over as heads for Spain. Thanks for the good times Dario and best of luck on your new endeavors.

-Our old pal Abate looks great at the Olympics in his limited role, and his making the most of his chances, but there is one kid who is showing all the skills. Forget Giovinco, Rossi is on fire, and the thought of him alongside Kaka is pure joy. He can play on the left, right, or center of the pitch and he can shoot from almost anywhere and does. Not only is he loaded with talent and potential, the kid is a Milan fan and loves the team. The only real issue that is forgetton time and time again is that he is owned by Man U and Sir Alex, and that is a tough nut to crack. Can you imagine him playing alongside C-Ron, why is he not at Old Trafford, send him to San Siro.

-Speaking of the Olympics, Pato is doing his thing, but Ronaldinho still has not convinced, and I know many of you will argue this point and you are more than welcome too, but hear me out just for a second. When Dinho was at the top of his game, he played with an almost boyish excitement. The man would effortlessly cut it inside, outside, and inside again and he would crack a shot on net and score goal after goal, time and time again all with an ear to ear grin that made you want to pick up a soccer ball the minute after you watched him. The bottom line is Ronaldinho was loaded with passion; he played not for money and trophies, the man played because he looked like he enjoyed the game. I don’t see that smile anymore; I see a man who looks labored, and borderline lazy. I also see a man who has forgotten what is like to play simple and play beautiful, his brief flashes of greatness this tournament have been sparse compared to his errant passes and his attempts at playing to flashy. The last game Pato had to come back to the center circle time and time again to retrieve the ball because Dinho was in the offensive third with his chair out waiting for the ball.

Pato and Kaka can’t do that game in and game out for Milan, way to much pressure on them, and they will fade by March. He has to step his game up, please don’t call me pessimistic, I want it as much you do, but I am still far off the bandwagon.

-Maldini was interviewed today, and he blamed lack of offense and depth for the woes of the Milan preseason. The man is in his 21st preseason and you have to think that he has seen it all, I wish at times he would let loose and tell us what is on his mind. He is such a professional that he it is probably not in his DNA, Paolo you are a better man than I.

-Lastly, our friends Fetyani, Penny, and Moka all have awesome player blogs for Kaka, Dinho, and Pippo. Check them out when you get a chance, it is top class stuff.

-Stay tuned for a postional breakdown and season preview as the season gets closer…

There is also the possiblity that Carletto believes that Dinho can be an out and striker, and I would not be surprised if we see that lineup at some point while he strikers are still recovering.

i hope rossi wants milan half as much as i want him there. he was sold for 6.7 mill euros and signed a six year deal last summer, and has a clause that man u can sign him back. I dont know exactly what that means though.
Give villarreal whatever they want for him in January or next summer. He is 21 years old and his price is only going to go up.

Is Ivanovic going to happen in real life, or is it going to happen in goal.com world?

Ivancovic has been reported to be hours away from signing for days now! i think someone needs to go back to 2nd grade and take lessons in telling time.

latest from mediaset is a meeting will be held tomorrow and it could be it. the deal is a loan with an option to buy.

the reason i say another full back (and please correct me if i’m wrong - you guys def know more about footie than i do) is that if nesta and maldini play cb with kaladze and invanovic (if he comes) as options, we are pretty much covered. the problem is on the sides where we have janku and favalli on left, oddo on right and zambro could play either - still dont think this is the best combination - we should have one more great option here (i know maldini can play left as well but still)
for strikers, i keep repeating the same thing - we need a big strong centre forward - boriello was supposed to do the role but given his injury, we need a replacement. getting dinhio, kaka or seedorf up front is imo risky

Sam, I dont even think Boriello is that type of guy, I think Marco is more a hybrid between the big Striker and the ball handling striker. Borriello would thrive with a partner I think like Gila, when all alone up front he will struggle to find a rhythmm, there are only a few guys on this planet that can thrive alone up front, guys that do it week in and week and out and none of our guys have proven that, except Pippo, and unless Eto, Henry, Ruud, or Adebayor are waiting in the lockerroom for game one, this system may need some tinkering.

What do you guys think about this?

I know Milan has a good amount of Italians, but their Brazilianness is well known too. KaPaRo? I was excited to see Borriello up front, even if I don’t think he’ll succeed there.

GF - so we would have to play 2 upfront - in which case we still need someone else to augment two 18 year old kids and one 35 years old poacher!

gianfranco, i think this whole alone up front has really been over played… kaka at times plays so advanced that he might as well be a second striker… the same goes for ronaldinho… and the attention that they get by opposing defenders pretty much gives our lone striker plenty of space in and around the box… plus with service from world class players like kaka and dinho, the lone striker is going to have the ball on a plate…

yea sucks that Ivanovic deal has stalled.. maybe there’s someone better?

Milan have no option but to get a new defender.. it just HAS to happen.. Digao, Simic OUT and Nesta injured.. ughh.. what more do you need to get a defender?

Thiago Silva did pretty well last Brazil game.. Hope we can get him..

Just heard the news about the Ivanovics deal falling thru!

    NOT HAPPY!!!!

We need to find someone decent soon and its not looking likely.

If, as i suspect, Galliani turns round in 10days time and says that we are fine as we are then……………(suggestions?)

K, from my understanding of the game your CB’s will typically mark your strikers so if you have two strikers than you are working 2 CBs to be covering at all times. If you have one striker than one CB marks while the other “floats” depending on the CB this may mean staying back or attacking the next person with the ball in a central position. A player like Kaka and Dinho when in an advanced position pull a CB to them if need be, but a centralized DM may take the role if needed as well. The bottome line is working over CB’s to tire them out and force them out of position to create scoring and passing lanes for Dinho and Kaka…

Maybe Milan should hearken to the old days and start playing a 3-man backline alongside a “libero”.

But seriously, we have just sold 2 centrebacks and lost another 2 to injury (one of which is very serious). Milan has to make a CB signing or integrate a youth player ASAP. Unless Ambrosini is seriously going to be our starting CB (please god no).
